I'm enjoying your build videos a lot. I am wondering why you didn't use the floor piece that came with the van (that you had asked them to take out) instead of spending the money on the plywood? I'd like to get a Sprinter and was thinking it would be a good material and cut down on cost to use that with insulation and sound proofing under it and the laminate on top of it

Wrist band is nice now get you some foam knee pads. They are great when you are constantly up and down on your knees working on the van. Nice work guys. We are converting an older T1N Sprinter. It really takes time.

We do need some foam knee pads. Great idea! Just checked out your channel and we're the 101st subscriber woo! We'll be watching your videos! We're wanting to do an elevated bed frame, so that should be helpful. Thanks!

You know you don't have to press down your kilmat so hard that it's perfectly smooth, it's ok if you can still see the pattern of the bubbles, they're just there to help a person keep track of where they have already rolled

Appreciate the work you are putting into documenting your van build. I have found many tips. Did you notice a significant difference in the noise level with the small amounts of Noico on the walls etc with the wheel wells fully covered?

Yep, spending a few bucks extra to invest in real quality plywood is a good choice: you will appreciate its straightness and its capacity to strongly hold screws. It is also important to mark each sub floor slats center line with a Sharpie mark on the walls, it makes plywood screwing so much easier. Good luck, I will follow the advancement of your project from Canada!

Awesome, thanks for the tips, support and watching our videos!! And for reassuring us on our indecisiveness with the wood 😅 We marked the walls with painters tape and it definitely helped a lot! Hi there in Canada from here in Utah!! 👋🏻

Some would say you should have used marine grade plywood because the glue used is much better at resisting the negative effects of moisture. I used 3/4 inch marine grade, but did not have as many supports as you. One thing I noticed is the wood beams were much colder than the foam board in the mornings. In other words they conducted the cold off the floor of the van much more than the foam. Everything in a Van build is a give and take, and each decision has pluses and minuses. Case in point, I now have a thick floor, but less head room.

Very good advice. It's definitely give and take and a huge learning process. We didn't even know about marine grade plywood at the stage of doing our floors but definitely something to keep in mind if we ever build another van. 😊

At the rear of the van there is a gap between the factory plastic threshold where the doors are and where your framing ended. It looks like you filled that in with a piece of insulation and just had your plywood extend out on top of that. Is that the case? If so, are you worried about it sagging after day to day use? We are installing the floor on our van this week and are brainstorming what to do with that gap. Your video has been super helpful thus far! 😊
@EncompassAdventure
@EncompassAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! First, thank you so much for watching! Good eye on the gap. This was actually a trouble area for us but we ended up just gluing wood there filling the gap, basically extending the floor framing out to the black plastic at the back of the van so all of the white metal floor was covered. It's silver because we covered it in foil tape. (You can see it at 23:03 in the video.) We also got some black vinyl stair nosing that we will put on that corner to kind of tie it all in together and hide the raw edge and foil tape. Hope this helps!

As we continue on our subfloor and frequently refer back to this video (SO HELPFUL!), we now have another question haha. Did the Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks apply well in the cold weather? We’re also building in Utah during the winter and the can states for temps 60-90 degrees. Any tips or tricks for your experience with Great Stuff? Also did you mist with water before applying?

Hi, thank you for the step by step instructions. May I ask how much of the Noico sound deadener you used for our van? The link above goes to a 36 square ft box.There is also an 18 square ft box. I am converting a 2005 Sprinter T1N 140" wheel base. Thank you!

Good Question!
@holalulis1032
@holalulis1032 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, newbie question. why put a wood frame (1x2s?) on ceiling vs securing thin plywood straight to ribs over the insulation?
@EncompassAdventure
@EncompassAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I think some people do that. We felt it would be better for us to use wood, it seemed more secure and the rib side that is facing down has large pre-drilled holes which could make it hard to place screws. We also have wires going through our ribs and didn't want to hit any, they were easier to miss screwing the wood in from the side. But mainly the wood tongue and groove pieces we chose for our ceiling are very thin. We actually put 5mm plywood up first and then the tongue and groove on top. Our next video will be about our ceiling and will it explain it a little more. Hope this helps! 😊

That wood you didn't use is not particle board. It's OSB. It's very weather resistant and would have been fine.

Hmm, that's good to know! We read somewhere that it warps on the edges, especially when it gets wet so it scared us away from it. Probably would have been okay but these are the results of over analyzing. Can you tell we've never done this before? 🤦‍♀️

Amateurs………………..Things like………….’I can’t sit on the floor’ (whilst applying the self adhesive silver tape). Rubbish……………….you just place a suitable sized/thickness of board that will straddle the wooden framework/battens and basically spread the load. You seemed to be making very hard work. Of what are very basic jobs.
@EncompassAdventure
@EncompassAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
@Mallers Amateurs would be correct, as we had never done anything like this before and it was only our second episode. We were learning as we went. Infact, if you go to 18:16 I literally say "Honestly, I've never used this before" talking about the foil tape. So thank you for your sharp observation. Additionally, if you keep watching, you'll see that I was moving around a piece of foam board, to sit on, while taping the floor. If you're not a fan of our video, you're in luck! There are thousands of other videos, on KZfaq, you could watch and maybe not waste your precious time here. Or, since you're seemingly an expert, you could make your own videos and share your knowledge with the world. But thanks for watching and for the comment anyway. Happy building! 😉
