Oct. 16, 2018 | Josh Rogosin -- Her nervousness was palpable and stood in stark contrast to her fully produced stage show. "I'm sorry I'm shy," Florence Welch told the crowd of NPR family and friends gathered for her Tiny Desk performance. "If this was a big gig, I'd probably be climbing all over here and running around."
Opening with the song "June," from Florence + the Machine's 2018 album High As Hope, Florence performed with her eyes closed. By the end of the three-song set, she fully embraced the experience and gave in to the rapturous audience. Within seconds of hearing her first note, the raw power of her un-amplified voice was chilling.
It's impossible to talk about Florence without her backing band. Tom Monger adds exquisite ethereal textures to the songs with his stunning mastery of the pedal harp. Hazel Mill's backing vocals and anthemic power chords on the keys accentuate the poignancy of the lyrics at just the right moments. And Robert Ackroyd's rhythmic, steady acoustic guitar drives the music forward.
But the intensity of the musicality is almost secondary to the message in her lyrics. Ear-worm melodies coupled with repetitive phrases create universal, awe-inspiring anthems. At the end of her first song, Florence implored the crowd to hold on to each other. In "Patricia," she insisted it's such a wonderful thing to love. After 14 enchanting minutes, it's impossible to disagree.
Set List
"June"
"Patricia"
"Ship to Wreck"

I was in jail for a while and inside we have tablets to use for purchasing stuff to watch or call or whatever. It’s very limited content. It’s not like free access to the whole web. It’s very much selected content. But they do have a variety of NPR tiny desk concerts to watch. I am not lying when I say that I’d watch this concert everyday at least once, partially because everything else wasn’t interesting and also because I attached myself to her voice and lyrics in these three songs. She got me through those hard times. Even on days I was sooo frustrated about being incarcerated and didn’t want to even bother watching this concert and wasting my money, I did so anyways. I am forever grateful to have had Florence to keep me company as I battled the dread of losing my freedom.

@@erickmaynard3507 What are you even talking about? Nothing was wrong with that beginning? Patricia felt a tad dull compared to other versions of the song she has done. That's the only thing a tad off, but that was just a less interesting rendition rather than a technical issue. Worse than average? Find me someone who's vocal talent rounds out to her level of extreme breath control, note sustaining, vocal agility, vocal fluidity and ability to weave it the way she can? She can crescendo insanely quick and flip from chest voice to falsetto in the same phrase seamlessly despite the two not being exacty connected in their traits. You can find people who have better pitch, sure. But, where you're getting 4 and 5 star with her in those areas you'll be getting 2's all day long. And that is in bands most people would deem still " Above average "

Her live performances of "Patricia" far outshine the recorded version, especially the ending "it's such a wonderful thing to love". The recorded version just fades out after only 5 repeats (and you can't hear any harp) whereas the live version has that powerful punch of the line getting sung and played faster and it just hits you in your soul!

it would be ~very~ easy for the song to fall apart since it kind of hinges on the repetition and consistency of the musicians' parts. I'm sure someone who has been a musician longer than I have could give you a much better and more technical definition than I can! I played clarinet from 5th-9th grade. I am in 12th grade now and miss the classical music world very much :( I'm hoping to get a clarinet of my own soon (I would rent a school instrument before). anyway, I know you didn't ask for all that haha, but it gives my comment context. I hope I answered your question adequately (:

also, the tempo is very irregular with other musicians coming in and out at strange times and the song taking unexpected turns. I wonder what the time signature might be. it also might be syncopated, but I'm not too sure about that. this song really just plays with tempo--very interesting from a musical standpoint! the accelerando at the end was pretty cool lol

One of the big difficulties with a. Don't like that would be the increasing pace at the end. It hinges so much on the the musicians keeping consistent I. Their increase and if you note they're taking cues from Florence's clapping. She's conducting the band by providing them the metronome with which to keep which is why you see that "nerves" it's actually intense concentration to make ensure they're keeping pace with the best she's giving them while filtering out other members music. Simtsiniously making sure theyre blending their sound with the others. It takes remarkable skill AND remarkable trust in Florence not to push them too far or raise too wuick which can happen in a live performance as you get lost into the adrenaline of a live performance. The closest to worry you see if from the harp but even then it's tinged with trust. It's truly s remarkable performance start to finish

Florence is so delicate and yet so strong. I also feel she really is extreme, especially in the way she handles her own talent She knows how to dose it and give it back to her people and she definitely gives her best in "extreme" ambiences: either extreme cozy little rooms or in the biggest festival ever. That's where her magic happens and it's not only about the atmosphere, is about the gravity she's got. I dunno if it makes sense but it did in my head after being enchanted by this.

Her back up singer is unreal!!! I always loved Florence but this set just made me realise how much her backup singer was influencing the various songs she released :D Great job NPR as always
@iTeacupPanda
@iTeacupPanda 5 жыл бұрын
I mean, I don't think the backup singer influenced the writing or sounds of the songs themselves LOL Florence usually just beats on walls and belts til she forms something and adds in her own vocal layers. She can't sing lead and do background though unless she uses a backing track, if she did it wouldn't be acoustic and she prefers having background vocals when she can. Some stages are just too small and confining to allow it though.

Michael Hartmann what I heard on commercial radio was so “big”, complexed and processed that the raw talent and passion gets lost amongst the mixing and production. Then you have a performance like this and while it’s only a little more minimal the talent of the artists come to the front. Back in the Led Zeplins day, album production was a lot closer to a live performance than what is done today and why I love their albums more that overly produced rock of today.

Do you feel loved? [Pre-Chorus] She told me all doors are open to the believer I believe her, I believe her, I believe her Do you feel loved? Do you feel loved?
