For me, this is not a song about a man. This speaks to me as a song to myself. I don't know who needs to hear this but if you're someone trying to hold onto yourself, those conversations and revelations need to be held in the light. You can't choose what stays and what fades but you can absolutely choose to not let yourself fade. Waking up can be violent when you've had shadows trying to keep hold of you.

This reminds me of my inner turmoil with suicide and anxiety. The man dancing and chasing and controlling her with pain makes me think of depression and anxiety and how much pain it causes. Her falling represents the desire to end it all. Her surviving and landing in a church (a place that represents salvation) makes me feel as though she’s escaped the evil for now. Idk tho. Everyone’s interpretations are great

I saw her in concert a couple weeks ago and noticed she didn't play any Ceremonials songs until her encore... Before she sang Never Let Me Go, she mentioned that the period in which Ceremonials was produced was very dark for her, she was at the height of her alcoholism and dealing with a lot of issues both personal and professional. Ceremonials is a very dark album and I think quite reflective of herself and life at the time. So yeah, I think your interpretation is pretty spot on.

I belive it's also about her relationship with the person she was with at the time, and they were breaking up... ("it's so easy to sing it to a crowd but it's so hard, my love, to say it to you out loud") She was in a dark place around this time, which could have easily brought her grandmother to her thoughts (she's also mentioned in the first song of the album)

Oh my god I remember when I was a toddler in the car listening to an album by her (now I know it’s Ceremonials)! I went through a bunch of her songs, found a song that I knew was in the album, and then looked up the album it was in and I remembered that it was the 7th song in the album that was my favorite (this song/what I was looking for) and I finally found it after 7 years!

The first time I heard this song was driving home from euthanizing my beloved cat. 😿 It surprisingly fit, and obviously I just lost it. It still brings me to tears. It amazes me how we can all relate to a particular song, but in different ways.

To me, this video portrays Florence' uneasiness and overall fear of two conflicting religions. The family-side she was raised knowing, Christianity and/or Catholic and the religion she's getting more into, Wicca and the unknown she's so interested in. That's why the magic and spiritual side of the more mystical religion is chasing her in the guise of a shaman (which i think means its attracting her but she's afraid to completely delve into it) and when she's falling and choir of young boys catches her means that Chrisitanity is always her safety net, which means she always feels safe while praying or going back to that familiar religion. That's just my take on it.

OH MY GOD, I just recently started listening to Florence and I am OBSESSED with her!!! This song is so transcendental!! It arouses tears, its a MASTERPIECE!! The fact that she has a choir of young boys in a church chanting with her and then catch her!! I F*CKING DROPPED!!!!! It's like listening to one of those super religious church people sing and become possessed by Florence's voice!!! EPIC MASTERFUL SONG!!!

when i hear this song it reminds me of an abusive relationship that i was in......i interpret the lyrics as talking about an abusive emotional bond with someone. they do you wrong and control you but you also don't want to leave them and you don't know why you feel like that and it drives you crazy. abusive people like that have no empathy or care....no light in their eyes. beautiful powerful song

Nearly a decade ago, this song led me to being the number 1 player of a little game called Race the Sun for approximately 24 hrs before I was bumped back down the leaderboard. Crazy to remember the person I was at that time. A depressed teen with nothing better to do then grind a video game again and again with this on loop
