Who are those swimming specialists who only know Laure Manaudou's name but have no idea what she looks like ? She's won everything that can be won in the sport, not too long ago, and when you see her coming you think she's her brother's girlfriend!? My word... At first you didn't say anything, which was a sign you had no clue, but we couldn't be sure, so you were saving your blushes. Why did you have to venture a comment in the end ? Silly mistake.

@@Andre-yj8dd you’re in the most optimal position to go fast when your head is down in a “streamline” position. The 50 meter free is the shortest race that one can hold their breath and sprint at speed for!

Actually specific stroke style plays directly into arm speed or in other words the negatively impacted speed is related to a certain extent by the changing of his stroke thereby making it more perfect.

He is the only one who doesn't bend the elbow. Rigid arms are the best for short races. Also he is 1.99m tall so his reach his more than the others.

For the anecdote, the French commentator found this awesome pun on the spot, when his sister Laure hugs him at the end: "Il a Laure autour du cou" ("He's got Laure around the neck") knowing that "Laure" is pronounced the same as "l'or", which means "gold" :)

I hear what you are saying Matthew, but there are many people with the *wrong stroke style* whom swim at astonishing speeds. This has perplexed me for years until I realized that these specific swimmers ( amongst them many swingers ) developed specific muscle strengths that directly complement their odd style of swimming. Ergo, change their style and now they need to redevelop both muscle memory and specific strengths in different fibres.

a very good swinmmer will be missing in the French national team - RIP Muffat - but a few others should make us prouf for the next few years: Agnel, Lacourt, Balmy, Manaudou, etc.

A lot of guys breathe every 2 in the 100free, but it depends on the rhythm of the stroke. A longer, loping stroke is more conducive to breathing every 2 because the breath fits naturally into the stroke, but it doesn't generate the sort of speed required for the 50. This is why the podium for the 50 and 100 is often drastically different.

Yeh good point. He makes up like what half a body length from 15-50. He basically makes up twice what Manadou beats Jones by. Maybe he would have saved about 0.4s if he'd got his start right and gone around 21.40 +/- 0.1 depending on what his normal start is like.

I also thought that, Julian, but it's very possible that his very specific muscle strengths and arm speed ( stroke frequency ) plays directly into this specific stroke style. Or in other words, changing his stroke to make it "more perfect" may negatively impact his speed, lol.

I think the 50 Free is about taking chance, because the race has to be close to perfect or else it'll have a huge impact on your place and time.
