Very first line made he think "must be French", then read the description and I was right! The French impressionists were so distinctive and so gorgeous!

This is absolutely unbelievable. Great melding of colours, lush melodies, character, and detailed orchestration. Purely French in essence with a little German touch here and there. The composer was both French and German.

Two recordings of the piano version of this suite have been recorded. One is long out-of-print but the other one, with the recently deceased pianist John Clegg, is available on the Paradisum label (UK-based). I don't consider this music to be reflective of Schmitt's mature style -- it's essentially a student effort, showing the influence of Schumann and Schmitt's teacher and mentor, Gabriel Faure. sounds nice and thanks for introducing this rare(?) work for us..! but why is the second piece played lower than it should? sounds like g minor to me not g# minor..

He changes the key in the orchestral version. No idea why. Never noticed until you pointed it out, but you can see yourself on IMSLP.

Lewis Bae Yeah, this was originally a set of 10 pieces for piano and he transcribed most of them for orchestra.

Lewis Bae Very similar indeed. Schmitt even inspired Ravel's Jeux d'Eau with a piece of his "Les Lucioles" from his Nuits Romaines.

Very beautiful piece. Florent Schmitt is now forgotten, not for his music that has a lot a qualities, but rather for his anti-Semitism and for his sympathies for the nazism.

Yeah his wiki page mentions that. Wagner had problematic views too, as did others of the time I’m sure. Definitely a stain on them personally. Some of their views/beliefs were disgusting, but they also composed some amazingly beautiful music. 🤷🏼♂️

@@smb925 A big difference with Wagner is that Schmitt was contemporary with the nazism. It is true that Wagner had some anti-semitic ideas, but his music was used by the nazi propaganda long after his death.
