Floret Original: Dahlia ‘Monster Mouth’

Meet Dahlia ‘Monster Mouth’, one of the first varieties I discovered on my breeding journey. This variety is nearly perfect: long, strong stems, plants get really tall, the color is exquisite, it’s healthy and productive… But it has one funny flaw, sometimes the centers form in an oval shape vs. a rounded shape and to me, they look like tiny mouths. That’s where her nickname came from.
My question for you is: does having an inconsistent flower form bother you enough that you wouldn’t grow her? I know it’s easy to say no, but I want you to really think about if that would be frustrating in the long run. I’d really love to hear your thoughts!

Several years ago when new to gardening, Jessica from Roots and Refuge said “perfection is incompatible with life”. If I remember correctly she had seen a beautiful spider in her garden but had other unwanted insects also. She sprayed to kill the unwanted insects but also never saw the beautiful spider again. Ever since, I haven’t sprayed for insects and also have a much greater appreciation for everything, especially the imperfect. Please market this unique and gorgeous in every way flower! 👌💕👍

as long as you include this feature in the description, the variety should find its place on the market. It feels that this one works well for the home gardener, but professional growers might not want to see it in their arrangements.

Good evening from Kentucky! Keep monster mouth! This was my 1st year with dahlias, and the stems were too strong and brittle. That bouquet your holding lays perfect. Falls perfect and all! I wish you were closer. I'd volunteer! Lol 🪻💐🏵🌺

Considering that it checks the other boxes for a productive, gorgeous cut flower dahlia... I think it would depend to me on how many threw a weird bloom: if it was 1 or 2 out of 10 blooms (or something like that), I wouldn't care. Also, to me it matters the most if it's acknowledged that a dahlia will semi-often throw blooms like that. I find it far more annoying when people don't mention it, but it's a common trait.

"imperfections" are inevitable, water damage, bug damage, whatever, but a quirk of a flower that gives it more personality is a beautiful thing! Monster Mouth is a fantastic name and I'm immediately hoping I'll be able to grow it myself someday!
