Flood waters are pushing levees to their breaking points. This afternoon, a levee near the Myakka River was compromised, forcing hundreds to flee. The death toll across the state is exploding, with at least 77 now dead. About 35 of those from Lee County alone. More than 5,000 Florida National Guard members are working alongside FEMA to provide relief while neighbors pitch in to help those who lost everything.

I'm around 20' above MSL but no rivers (I'm in PBC) and we have no issues with rain here no matter how much we get. choose wisely WHERE you live in FL many places are just not safe but almost all of them are along the coast or on these barrier islands. far as I'm concerned only stupid people live there.

Poland and other countries threw their doors open to the refugees that the Russian war created. Florida thinks it's cute to lure refugees from Texas, a state that receives more federal dollars than they pay, and use them as pawns in a domestic culture war. And here is Florida man showing his unappreciatve a$$ to the world. Maga is a cult. Get out of it before they get you to do something stupid like trying to storm the US capitol.

Sadly, Ronnie, the government simply doesn't have the money to bailout Florida. We cannot evoke a "put it on the credit card" type of spending. Well, that's what DeSatan said when he voted against FEMA funds to be sent to NY after Hurricane Sandy. Let's do as DeSatan advocated himself. After all, Florida is in Hurricane alley, so Florida should have money set aside for Hurricane relief.

I have lived in Florida my whole life, all 36+ years. I have seen hurricanes like Michael, Irma, Charley, Andrew, ect slam into this state. I have seen the devastation before, and I have been through a few hurricanes myself. But this kind of destruction, I have never seen before, this is literally like Michael mixed with Katrina, just absolute devastation. I am still without power myself but I am thankful as I still have a home and running water, we were very fortunate. My most sincere condolences to those that have lost (for what little it means in the grand scheme of things), and I wish you a streamlined non BS filled rapid recovery. The hits just keep on coming. I am a resident of Southeast coastal N.C. and have been thru numerous hurricanes and tropical storms some dropping 15 or more inches of rain in a couple of days. I ve been flooded out twice, the last time my house was basically destroyed from roof damage that allowed rain water to enter my home soaking everything from above. All that rainfall 15+ inches in two days caused flooding, standing water soakI ng everything , furniture, appliances, clothing in my house. The last impact from that storm was the mold that made my home unlivable so I know what those in Fla. impacted by Ian are going thru and can expect in days ahead. Typically after a hurricane passes it becomes sunny and unbearably hot. No power , no air conditioning and usually no clean water makes clean up, cooking meals , bathing and just trying to live in general a challenge if you haven't been thru be thankful. I would like to express my sorrow to all affected and will keep you in my prayers. My condolences for those that lost family members and loved ones. @@toneloc7910 white privilege? White privilege, huh? "Rational" people. "Rational" people know that "white privilege merely describes a variety of entitlements and opportunities INHERENT on a system both ANECDOTALLY and STATISTICALLY proven to provide greater advantages to the majority than minorities. In fact, you could just as easily use the term Japanese Privilege, if you are living in Okinawa or some other part of Japan. It is merely a term for a group of social/ sociological phenomenon - some bad, some neutral. "Rational" people don't get so easily threatened (defensive) about such REALITIES merely being thrown out there to reveal the "rational" peasant stock (like yourself). I mean, seriously, I have more trouble FISHING than I do baiting YOUR kind to pop up and make dumb comments to let me know who to flag as anything BUT "rational." No, what you are is selfish and motivated by self-serving biases, at best, or a raging bigot and uneducated DENIER of the historical (and present-day) facts of the western socioeconomic disparities - most of which are remnants of DECADES of laws and policies (and BEHAVIORAL CULTURE) CREATED to either deny minorities access (to loans, housing, legal protections, marital rights, etc.) or simply afford unjust advantages to the majority caste. In fact, "white privilege" in and of itself isn't even evil or malicious, it is just the phenomenon that has come from the socioeconomic history and the resulting cultures of a complicated western world. I am sorry you, clearly, take it so personal though. Sounds like a YOU problem. Maybe see a therapist to resolve your conflicted lifestyle and choices? Or, perhaps, see a doctor about a lobotomy for that pesky conscience that acted up when it read "white privilege." I mean, why else would a "rational" person get so butthurt by a "rational" phenomenon - unless the 💩-ty side of your character was having trouble silencing the moral side that you keep locked up and gagged in a basement in the back of your withered and rotting soul? As hurtful as it may sound, areas that were heavily affected need to ask whether rebuilding should happen. The shallower shelf on the western side of Florida makes it possible for storm surges to get very tall. As the sea surface temperature warms and sea level slowly rises more destruction will occur in these coastal areas. Government in Florida needs to think about how they are going to deal with coastal properties and the Keys, because the frequency of stronger hurricanes is not going to go down.

@themuse11

It doesn't sound hurtful, just wrong. The sea level has been rising since the last ice age 11k years ago. This is evident in the geological record, if you look especially at the natural history of the Florida coastline (it's a good example). Sea level rise is actually slowing down. In all the many years I've lived by the sea, there has been no change. It's not going to get much higher than this before it begins a cyclical retreat.
@danstrayer111
@danstrayer111 Жыл бұрын
@@themuse11 What sea level does where you live bears no relation to anything. Sea level change is different all over the world. It is not slowing down and there is no evidence to support that assertion. Let's face reality about American "culture". Once upon a time, a Democrat made a movie about carbon in the atmosphere and its effects, and ever since that moment , half of this god damned country has been behind a wall of denial because they are too STUPID to understand the simplest scientific principal. And one more thing... like covid, if one cannot grasp the simplest parts of statistics, you will never understand what' going on.
@hielo_amiente
@hielo_amiente Жыл бұрын
@@themuse11 Could you cite a source for the decrease in sea level rise near Florida? I was not able to find a source myself but maybe you have one. Yes sea level rise has increased since the last glacial maximum, and will still continue with the metling of glaciers, ice sheets, and thermal expansion. The problem isn't even the sea level rise. It is that the warmer sea water of the gulf feeding Hurricanes a lot and making them gain intensity rather quickly. The storm surges from these hurricanes are literally going to keep tearing the western coast of Florida year after year. Natural negative feedbacks of the ocean wont kick in for thousands to hundreds of thousands of years. That is why my comment suggests that Florida must rethink what they will do with these areas to see if it is safe/ worth it for people to keep rebuilding in these most impacted areas.

I drove back home from Vero Beach to Clearwater yesterday. I passed sections that were dry before the hurricane that now have flooding as far as I could see on both sides of the road going for miles at a time along highway 60 in several areas across the state. I literally watched three people get into bad car accidents over the course of a four hour drive because a lot of traffic lights on intersections of multi lane highways were cut off from power when huge sections of lines were torn down. Considering that I kept way north of the worst of it, I think this is gonna take a lot of work to recover from.
