There was an article in our local gazette, about a chickenbreeder of quality chickens. He urged people do join in his apppaerently dying out profession and shared a story about how his prized chicken(not rooster mind you) hacked open his pulse artery when he handled it. This was a chick he was familiar with and raised it. Roosters can absolutely be dangerous, their wingstrikes are like elbow strikes , the talons and the beak is sharp.
@raventhecraven1306

As someone who owns chickens, roosters will literally murder each other. They have spurs on their legs which these use to stab each other and , of course, humans. If they jump and get you in the neck, well you’re dead. However, they follow a sort of pecking order, meaning if you put the rooster in its place it wont attack you. But if it feels its territory and flock are at risk, they’ll attack no matter what. Also, by territory, I mean anywhere they take a shit. Conclusion: Florida is, in fact, in the void, and roosters are nasty.
@ilexlio

Legit, had someone drop a known asshole of a rooster off on our property and it pecked the shit out of our own rooster, then tried to have a go at us. As someone who's had pet chickens and would be devastated if one of my girls died, I'm leaning towards James' side. Like yeah it's terrible that he never told his neigbor what happened, but Roosters are indeed aggressive and territorial. And contrary to their size, they will fuck you UP if they want to. Those spurs and talons tear through skin like razors and it's no rare occurence that chicken farmers have to cull the occaisional rooster because it's attacking farmhands or other hens. Big Roo likely thought the whole neighborhood was his territory since his owner never fenced him in and that's gonna cause problems for everyone.

I'm sure other people like geese or even simply like having difficult animals but neither appeal to me as a utility or pet. Again, I'm sure people have had good experiences with geese, but the few people I've known who've tried owning geese say they're a lot like really big, really unpredictable ducks.

@@waxblast7528 the aggression level in roosters varies wildly between individuals. In the case of dogs, the owner is at fault if their dog is not contained properly and runs around attacking people. I understand the damage a rooster can do is usually not as bad as what a dog can, but I think it's unfair that this man is getting a felony charge for defending himself against an animal that wasn't contained properly.

I've owned chickens for years and it is true that most roosters tend to be aggressive. Usually I just shuffle them around with my foot until they give up but its terrifying to people who don't have experience with roosters. As someone who grew up on multiple farms, this was definitely self defense, most of the time you buy a rooster specifically because they're aggressive so that it'll protect your hens from coyotess owls, and lynx's, roosters will go toe to toe with anything just like a damn badger, and from my experience, there isn't any special burial ceremony people give to their roosters, at least not commonplace so throwing it in a ditch where it's out of the way of getting disturbed by traffic sounds like the only real option besides leaving the corpse by the owners house, which probably would have come off worse. Roosters are glass cannons in the perfect sense of the word, they can only take so much, but in that time you could pretty easily get a one way trip to the hospital. Ik general society probably sees this as a joke, but if it wasn't for that stick, this could have been a very different story

For real. My father owns two, and his roosters are fucking aggressive. Especially the short one who roams freely. We were absolutely terrified as the big rooster called Johann showed us warnings and was clearly agitated by us in there. There were low places to climb, and from there we started climbing up the fence another meter or so. Rooster was seemingly okay with us staying at distance, until a minute later or so, our big brother let us out, really was a terrifying experience anyhow. He was the kinda brother to try out wrestling moves on his younger siblings. What an a-hole he was, and partly is to this day.

As someone in the farming community, keeping Roosters that show any aggression towards people is not acceptable. If the guy wanted a pet rooster, he needs to keep it contained in his yard. A lot of the reason for the "Florida Man" stereotype is because of the Sunshine Law passed in Florida in 1995; it makes court charges a matter of public record as soon as they're filed as opposed to once they're decided like in most states. When I was a baby my parents had a road island red rooster, appropriately named Red. He was taller than average, around two feet. He hated, HATED, my mother. Was otherwise completely fine. Sometimes roosters, if kept in bad conditions + don’t have hens around, are known to wake up one day completely different and terribly aggressive, especially to people. This was not Red, as the only person he ever hated was my mother. He would go outside her bedroom window, which is on the first floor but high up, and would jump up over and over again to stare at her. If she went outside, he would absolutely chase and attack with full power. If she wanted to get out of a car, she would open and close the opposite car door where he would run to, and then bolt inside while he was confused. It’s not uncommon for roosters to do this to people who have wronged them or something, but my mom never did anything to this chicken. Dude just hated her.

Imagine having a record for defending yourself with a stick against a rooster. I'm pretty sure, if it had been a dog roaming the neighborhood and terrorising friggin' children, people would be calling the guy a hero. But because people don't know the damage a rooster can do, they picture a loud, fairly docile animal on a haystack. Mind you, it's always the owners' faults. Any pet should be your problem, not the neighbors'.

I brought home a rooster to be my pet when i was a child. He was super friendly when he was young, he'd hang out with my family and our dogs all the time, really affectionate. Then he became a fully grown adult and he was a bastard, attacking anyone for any reason. Hed jump on the rottweilers backs to peck at their heads cause the dogs couldnt do anything to stop it then. Some really do just choose to be assholes lol

I had a rooster as a child and that thing grew to the size of a small dog. Let me tell you, when a rooster puffs up and starts doing that threatening dance he isn't posturing. His is going to attack 100%. I got into literal fights with it and he would always manage to do damage to me. Now that I'm older I know that I could have easily lost an eye. Most are no problem but every now and again you get a Gallo Negro (Black Chicken) which is a term used for the biggest baddest rooster/person there is (Not always but the myth perpetuates that those roosters usually they tend to have black or grey feathers). The term gets referenced in the movie Blood In Blood Out to describe Paco.

fellow former chicken raiser here to say this guy ^^ is 100% correct. We had a black hen that was the lone survivor of several straight up slaughters that took out all the other rhode island reds, we named her ninja and she died of old age. Texas racoons are something else and for anyone looking to move to Texas with chickens just know you need to build your coop like fort knox and lock it up right at dark every single night and be prepared to kill racoons, foxes, skunks and anything else on sight.

Earily similar situation happened to my younger brother when he was about 10. He'd take a somewhat bulky stick with him for protection against the rooster whenever taking the eggs from chickens. One time the rooster jumped at him, so he just swung the stick, hit him on the head. Rooster dropped down and never woke up after that one strike. I saw it with my own eyes. If a 10 year old can accidentally kill a rooster like this, I am sure a grown man can.

I've raised chickens, and roosters can be very aggressive. I'll never forget the most bad ass rooster I ever met, I had to go get geared up in chaps, Carhartt jacket, work gloves and welding mask, in the middle of Oklahoma summer, to battle this rooster for five minutes to butcher him. That rooster would have killed me without my PPE.

I honestly think he's in the wrong for killing it, he just shouldn't have been in a position where he had to fight it. As "dangerous" as roosters can be according to these experts in the comments, you can easily avoid confrontation. Obviously he didn't mean to kill it, nor did he deserve a felony charge/jail time, but there should be some kind of compensation (A fine or smth). Pets carry a lot of emotional value, and it hurts to lose them.

@Hampter You have never been by a rooster have you . I would go as far as saying you are probably a city dweller or suburbanite. You made that obvious when you said there would never be a need to defend yourself against a rooster . Incase you didn't know rooster, fyi they will attack unprovoked and they can go after you face , chest ,legs . So an aggressive roosters life is not worth a single scratch on a human or pet so it's better for everyone for that rooster to be gone.
