As you take the oath to serve in the military and abide by US laws and the Constitution , you should automatically become a US citizen.

Absolutely, citizenship should be automatically issued right along with the DD214 discharge papers or after 4 years of service, whichever comes first.

My husband spent 30 years in the military as a citizen. But this? This sickens both of us. It seems like something always makes us less proud of the service we put in. I'm embarrassed for this poor gentleman. He deserves citizenship before a whole lot of others. Yet at the border we freely give citizenship but not for someone who served our country? Let's get real here.

@@KevinSpeese I don't know if they are sitting at desks at the border LOL, but yes. It is offered easily. As it should be for recruited foreign military who spend 20 to 30 years defending OUR country.

CIS just can't grant citizenship without having lawful authority to do so. Sounds like he will need to have a Senator file a private bill to grant citizenship.

No he does not. He just needs to file a form for naturalization - though frankly it is outrageous he has to do this given what the government promised him and his service to our country.

@@Stinger913 I'm a retired immigration officer. Naturalization is for green card holders. The wife would have to file for him to become a permanent resident. He would then be able to file for Naturalization after a period of time.

@@AraknaChipre The best answer is a private bill as I initially stated. Granted my immigration work was enforcement and not the benefits side, we still had to learn Naturalization charts and determine if someone could be a derived citizen when making arrests. The benefits side cannot just randomly grant citizenship, even if you or I think the guy is deserving of it. There has to be a section of law that authorizes CIS to grant citizenship and even residency. If he has no qualifying relative that can petition for him for residency, then a private bill is the only option. I have dealt with cases in my career where we did deport persons who were not citizens, served honorably in the U.S. armed forces, and then committed felonies later in life.

9 years 3 deployments didn't get my citizenship until after i got out because i was angry they lost my paperwork twice 😅😅😅😅 i feel your pain

Who is the individual or individuals who have denied this veteran US citizenship? Those are the individuals who need to be demoted and redirected into careers that do not require them to think, because obviously they have difficulty arriving at logical conclusions based on the facts.

Until you take the Oath of Citizenship and have the physical certficate in your hands, no foreigner enlisted in the U.S. armed forces should think they're a U.S. citizen. I feel bad for this man, however, he should have realized that without a naturalization certificate in his hands, he was not a U.S. citziens. In law, your rights are protected when you have it in writing (hence, a physical naturalization certificate) and not hearsay (promises of citizenship).

They didn't flat out deny him citizenship. They denied him "expedited citizenship". Assuming he is a legal resident of the USA, he can just apply the regular way and be a citizen in under 1 year. Something is not adding up with this story.
