He’s a really consistent QB but he’s just gotta work on his arm strength. He consistently under throws on deep shots. Even though I don’t know if he’ll have a shot at the NFL, he seems to be the type of consistent player that NFL teams look for in a backup QB.

Metrz is now the 3rd straight QB from Wisconsin that transferred to another school and flourished elsewhere(Jack Coan, Notre Dame, Alex Hornibrook, FSU, and now Mertz). It is clear that Chryst is a QB killer. Mertz is now in a system with a coach who actually tailors it to his abilities. Paul Chryst was unwilling to be flexible and was going to force Mertz to play QB his way no matter what. Chryst was the problem, not Mertz.

It was 4th and 29 near their own end zone with seconds left on the clock, up by 4. It’s smarter to have your QB waste time, potentially run out the clock, give up 2, and kick off. Instead of punting from your own endzone. Anything could go wrong on the punt. A bad kick, a bad snap, a fumble, the defense blocks it, it gets returned for a touchdown, etc. Even a good punt would likely leave South Carolina in Hail Mary range. A kick off is more controlled. The only possibility is South Carolina miraculously plays the lateral game and takes it, or an unlikely kick off return. And if SC scores a touchdown in any scenario, it doesn’t matter if it was a 4 point lead or 2. This was a good call and is used fairly often given the circumstances.
