Flossing your cassette when using a waxed chain

A simple method to keep your cassette sparkling clean when riding with a waxed chain. Leave your comments to let me know what you think.

As an alternative, try using pieces of corrugated cardboard to clean the cassette. Place a small piece of clean corrugated cardboard between a pair of gears. The cardboard should fit snuggly between the gear rings. Simply hold the cardboard in place while rotating the gears. Most of the dirt and grime will simply rub onto the cardboard. Repeat the process for the remaining gear sets. The whole process takes only a couple minutes to clean the entire cassette. I use this method routinely to remove road grime, especially during Seattle winters.

Molten Speed Wax suggested using a car detailing brush to clean wax flakes. Works pretty well. Gets inside the cassette, into the derailleur areas, etc. Still need to vacuum wax flakes though. I like Gear Floss but normally use an old t-shirt, gather as many or few folds as will fit into the cassette gap, and do the same process of back-spinning the cassette.

Finish Line Gear Floss is the product name. I considered buying it when I was in the bike shop. Instead I used wooden coffee stirrers "appropriated" from the break room to pick out the wax.

Gear floss works fine, but it's fairly expensive. I went to the fabric store and bought some yarn for the same thing. I have thin yarn for the cassette and heavier for the chain rings and jockey wheels. Yarn works great and you can pick your favorite colour too.

Just take the wheel off and use a stiff long bristles brush and some air it will shine and you can check stuff.

That's how I do it. I put a little soap and water on a stiff plastic bristle brush and just scrub away. Cassette comes out gleaming.

I find that the flossing is easier if I remove the wheel from the bike and set in my lap.

Great, i do the same with old panty socks of my wife. Clean cassette as well.

Seems like nylon rope 1/8 inch would cost much less, 100 ft is $8 while Gear floss cost the same but about 1 ft long.

i have to re-wax ,i chain every 80-100km don't know why suppose to last more ...

Is it because of the noise? According to Silva, you should not be concerned with a bit of noise. The links inside should still be waxed. I relax mine after 300-400 km and it works fine. No measurable wear after nearly a year.

@@raulfernandezperez73 Maybe the chain wasn't completely clean from factory grease. Wax won't adhere to the metal if it's still greasy.
