Jean demonstrates the three (yes, three!) basic ways to cross stitch: Danish, English, and Victorian methods. There's also a Herringbone Stitch tutorial and a chat about developing "stitch confidence." Don't miss the announcement about Zoom classes, too!

Thank you for demonstrating the three basic methods, I find that I use all three in many of my stitching patterns. Will send an email, I am curious and excited to learn more for this wonderful craft. I have loved the idea of taking a blank piece of fabric and transforming into a design that is pleasing to my eye and to the person I gift many of my patterns. Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe and stitch what you love.

What I like about your videos is that they are not too long and are very clear and direct to the point. I truly enjoy watching them. I learned to cross stitch the Danish way 30 years ago and even today it annoys me if I do a stitch in the wrong direction. But lately, I find it practical to use all 3 of them, if that makes my life easier. Still, it is hard to give up on a perfect back that the Danish stitch gives. Even using the other ways, my work will show 80% Danish stitch and a mix of the others when and where needed. Thank you for doing it and enjoying it as well.

Iris Rivera, I think we all feel the same about Jean and her teaching. One of the things I like Jean is that you are continually giving grace to all stitcher's, no matter if we use aida or 40 ct linen. Whether we use DMC or Silk. I stitch because it brings me so much joy and I admire so many of the samplers that were not really popular in the early 80's, of course most of what I did then was baby gifts and such. Jean, thank you for demonstrating all three of the cross stitches. I used to do English method, but now find I enjoy the Victorian stitch...it just seems more natural for me. Thank you for all your time and preparation for each of these video - you are an amazing teacher!

Wow! This is the video I needed. I've ONLY ever worked on Adia. I've picked up stitching again after being away for decades before KZfaq. It's a different world now from just my choices of Dimension kits from Michaels years ago. I've been getting up my confidence of trying Linen and I did buy a piece that I can practice on (just like you said). I subscribed and I'm going to watch all your videos while I'm stitching as a Master Class of sorts. You have a great way of teaching e.g. great voice and nice pace. I appreciate it. Can't wait to watch more and look for your out-of-print lettering books. So glad I found you. Naomi from RI

Thank you for doing these videos. I am working on my second linen piece. I always used Aida for counted work. Which I learned the basics from a teach yourself to cross stitch book from Walmart. I learned embroidery from my stepmom when I was between 8 and 10 years old. I laid it down and went to sewing barbie clothes by hand. Pickup cross stitching about 25 years old. I soon got bored because I was not finding anything I wanted to do in the kits. With the books it was really hard to find materials...because I didn't know about stitch shops only big box stores. But now I have found places for supplies and charts... lol my bank account doesn't like it lol but I do. Thank you for teaching us how to do embroidery stitches on the counted 😀

Have 2 kitted up (one is your Hearts Come Home SAL). I find myself wanting to do them all! LOL However, I am trying to do one at a time so I can gain confidence as I do larger and more difficult pieces. I have found that cross stitch is a relaxing and stress reducing craft that I can do during any downtime while at work.

There is a trend among a group of stitchers to have many, many projects going at once … like 20, 30, 40! … this leaves many new stitchers with the sense that this is the way to go and that it is somehow, what must be done to be a part of this community of needleworkers. For me, this is NOT normal and is not gratifying or even productive. It’s like going to a buffet and loading your plate with everything to the point where you enjoy nothing. (End of rant.) You are wise to focus on a project and use it to develop your stitching style and to hone your skills. Keep it up!

I just now found your channel and subscribed right after watching this video. Now I'll have to go back and watch all the other videos. I've had a needle in my hand since I was about six years old, but even us old dogs (I'm retired now) can learn new tricks. Thank you for demonstrating the various methods. I usually stitch the Danish way and sometimes the other ways as the need arises. I didn't know that there was a Victorian method; I thought it was just some mutt thing I'd worked out in my head. As a youngster, I learned all sorts of interesting stitches. It was great fun find one and share it with my sisters or mother. We'd embroider handkerchiefs or pillowcases or other small household goods. As a young adult, cross stitch began taking over the stitching world and all those fun stitches languished in my memory. I put stitching aside to rear my son (who's now married with children of his own). Now that I have more time, I can do more than one project every few years (being single is not one big party...) and I am delighted to find that there are now charts available like The Queen's Sampler (just getting ready to start that) and other historical samplers that make use of the vast array of special stitches that make stitching so much fun for me. All that was to say thank you for showing other stitches that are so lovely and not at all hard to work. These add so much to a piece and often it's simple to replace an area of plain cross stitch --especially on a border--with something else to make the work personal and much prettier.

I think your flosstubes are fabulous. I have been stitching since I was 16 and have done things certain ways and now I know the why of it. I evidently use all three types of stitches on certain pieces depending on what it is - fill- in, single rows or stitches and was not aware of the names of the styles. I have often wondered if I was stitching 'the right way'. I find your 'tutorials', if you will, to be informative, interesting and oh so helpful. I feel I a have learned quite a bit from you and I love the fact that you provide a little bit of history about certain stitches, fabrics, styles, etc. Thank you so much for sharing your love and knowledge of textiles, cross stitch and the whole lot.

Hi, my name is Iris Rivera and I’m from Puerto Rico first time viewer and I need to say, loved it. Love your way you talk and the way you explain things. Will love to take your zoom class too. I’m going to keep up with all your other floss tube so I could keep learning. I used to cross stitch many years ago, then picked up again thanks to the pandemic and I have to say I getting in love with it again. I’m a quilter and knitter and I wish there was enough hours of the day that can do them all. My time zone is eastern time but we don’t change time when day light saving time starts so right now I’m one hour ahead of eastern time, like I said will love to take the zoom class preferably any week day before 3:00 pm. Thanks for the opportunity and stay safe

I learned the Victorian from your videos and have been using it. I love it. I recently finished a piece that had a staggered board that was slow and frustrating to stitch. I kept trying different ways to get it stitched. I wish I had known the Herringbone! I'll definitely be using it. Thank you.

Thank you, lots of great information. I do Victorian! That makes sense as my mum taught me needlework and she was a Victorian era lady. I didn’t know there was any difference as I’ve never seen the back of anyone else’s work.

I went and checked in my collection. I only have four of your books. Lil’ Folks, and three alphabet books. The Irving- Munson, the Alphabet Treasury and Abecedary, the third collection. Thank you for your work. Also, I appreciate what you said about a doodle cloth. I never thought about that. I am a knitter and we do gauge swatches and practice a particular stitch before we dive into a project. The same can be said for cross stitch, practice first. Thanks again!

Yes, knitters take it for granted that practice swatch is a necessary step. Needleworkers could do with some of that discipline!

For those who do aida 14,16,and 18 counts we are left out . Not everyone do linen .it would be help ful to cover it all tks

I do understand and I am sorry that you feel left out. Here's my thinking: when I demonstrate on linen, a person using Aida can easily apply what I show. If I demonstrate on Aida, a person who is new to linen won't know what to do.

I have only used aida and am able to follow along. However I do have a few small cuts of other fabrics that I can practice with "ornament" sized charts on to see how I like them. Haven't done it yet.

Jean, that was great! I think I finally understand how to do the herringbone stitch! (Shamefully confessing- I have never been able to do the diagonal herringbone stitch that is one of the first bands of Northern Needleworks diagonal band sampler. I may give it another try now that I understand the stitch better!). Thank you!

When my mom signed her work it was with her own written handwriting so I love when she did this because her hand was so different because she was left handed as am I, and you could not mistake it.

Jean, I so look forward to Saturday’s with you. These floss tubes are like taking a Masters class. You are so calming and it’s like having a friend to stitch with in these trying and often lonesome times. I’m new to stitching on linen. I am using a hoop as I find the Zwiegart 28 count distorts when I’m stitching, making it difficult to always ensure the right place to enter or exit the linen. Any suggestions? Also I am curious about you stitching space, in particular lighting. Do you have any recommendations. Thanks for all you are doing.

Using a hoop is a fine way to stitch. I am too lazy and too impatient to use one :) I have three stitching "nests" and I have a floor lamp set up at each spot ... I have been blessed with good eyesight so far ... so I don't have anything really special. One is a lamp from IKEA, one is an Ott (I used a coupon at Joann's), and one is a Tao Tronics. I don't think I spent more than $40-50 for any one of them.
