Flosstube #19--How I use my Elan Lapstand, Ott lights, Q-snaps and Scroll Rods

I show how I stitch in my stitchy spot, and show how I use my elan lapstand, my floor stand, my ott lights, my q-snaps, scroll rods and stretcher bars, and the different kinds of scroll rods. I forgot to show how it flips over so you can end a thread on the back!!!!! I so meant to, sigh. You just loosen that left knob a touch and the whole thing flips right over. I will demonstrate it in Flosstube #21 which I will film tomorrow (April 5).

I use an Artisan Designs "Elan" lap frame and I have their floor frame as well. I have been using them for about 15 years. Would not part with them for the world. He is the husband of a stitcher who designed it to her specifications. I use it with Q-snaps and scroll rods, while I lean back with my feet up. I use the lap frame for everything except huge projects which I do on the floor frame. He is just a one man shop, and does not sell to retail shops anymore, but you can order from him directly at www.artisandesign.com. I recently ordered a "back-up" Elan lap frame from him (in case I ever lose my luggage) and it came in 2-3 weeks.

Decades ago, I found myself sewing with cartoons on the TV. It was a light-bulb moment. I realized that when I was sewing or any closeup project like needlework or crocheting to music, I would tire easily and quit. When I was doing those same projects while watching tv, I would last for hours longer. I decided that by lifting my eyes to the tv and refocusing them, they didn't tire as easily. So, I loved you mentioning watching the tv.

"A process stitcher"... Finally an expression that defines my style. I too love the process of it, besides there isn't enough wall space in my house for all the projects I have. Stitching without worrying how and where it's going is nice. Thanks for the lovely video.

This was the best accessories video I’ve ever seen. There aren’t too many out there and I learned a lot. I was never sure how to work Q snaps and now I’m going to try them. I have an expensive scroll system and am intimidated by it but now I’ll give it a go. I loved that you shared your room with us and were so confident and prepared that you were a delight to listen to. Thank you. Lynn Fardella. Pocono Mt Chapter EGA Metropolitan Region.

Oh. My. Word! Your video is packed with information! I'm planning on getting back into embroidery. I located my old floor stand and it seems to be missing parts so I need to get a new one (I bought it in the 1970s). I could not decide if I wanted a lap frame or a floor stand and your video was perfect! I think I'm going to try to locate the Ergo Floor stand. If I really, really get into embroidery, I'll probably add the lap stand to it at a later date. I had hoped that the lap stand could be slipped under my thigh to hold it more securely than rocking around on my lap, but it doesn't look like that would work. In any case, thank you so much for this wonderful, wonderful video--you're the best!

You are very welcome!!! I know there are stands out there that go under your thigh, but you are correct this one does not work that way :) And so glad you are getting back into embroidery!!!

I have a tip for you. I sew fabric onto the top of my project so that there is more fabric to roll around the top bar, any sort of fabric will do for this. This gives you the choice to have the area that you are working on closer to your body and is more comfortable for your arms and shoulders.

Brenda, you sold me on the Elan lapstand and the scrollrods. I just got it and am loving it. Love the V clamps since I am a q snap user. Once I finish my current project I'll be starting a sampler and will use the scroll rod with the extended lap frame. I'm so excited for this, thanks for making me aware of this system.

Best practices...a term I used often during my 38 year RN career. Have even brought this very meaningful term into the Co-caregiver role I share with my younger brother, with our 95 yr. old mother...hebe.. he's NOT fond of it, but, to me, it means the best of all other choices!!!

Thank you so much for this video. Your explanations are very clear. You are so right that we want to see how others stitch. Not just see how they stitch but also their stitching spot and setup they have to stitch comfortably. I’m also a process stitcher, although I just got back into it from a many year break. I’m a process knitter too so I understand that terminology. I have projects that I stitched many years ago that I haven’t fully finished. Love your floor and lap stand. I am definitely going to check them out. Thank you again for this video.

Hi, Brenda! It's nice to meet you! KZfaq recommended your video to me right now and I started watching it. How I understand you about living without sunshine for a long time! Now I live in Nevada, but before coming here I lived in Eastern Europe and we had there a lot of gloomy autumn and winter days. Nevada is very sunny every season and I thought Utah is the same. I liked your story very much and will go on watching your other videos. Thank you!

Thank You!! Yes, in general, Utah has mostly sunny days as we are a relatively hot and dry state. But not as many sunny days as Nevada!! My office at work has no windows, and my home did not have any south facing windows before the new addition we did. In the winter the sun moves so far south on the horizon that it did not shine very much in my house. And the shorter days meant there was only about 45 minutes of daylight after work before it got dark. But I fell very blessed to live in a sunny state :) Wow, Eastern Europe!! That is amazing. I have been to western Europe once when I was in college, it was gorgeous. I would like to see Eastern Europe some day.

Hi there I am a new sub from Canada, Ontario to be exact. I woke up in the middle of the night and somehow had your stitch mania video on my iPad from 2019. I couldn’t sleep because I was addicted to watching you and your enthusiasm, but after a while, I had to try and get some Z‘s. Today I’m enjoying this video about how you stitch. I have bifocals, and like you I have mono contacts where one is stronger than the other. I hardly wear contacts anymore because I’m not working and my glasses are so much easier. Because I’m nearsighted I end up taking them off but then I can’t see the TV lol. But perhaps wearing my contacts with the reader glasses would work for both. Thanks for the idea.😂

Just found this channel & found our lives has progressed to a similar place! Liked & Subscribed...before you got into using your lap model!!! I stitch on my dark red microfiber recliner...person power used to close the foot rest. I currently using the 3 items on the Ott floor lamp; having to "fix" the end with the lamp & magnifier.. Just snapped off of the adjustable tubing. Hehe, the Used, Häagen-Dazs chocolate bars w/ almond chips over coffee ice cream are coming on very handy, as I used them as splints. Oh, & wrapped it with Frog tape! On an especially tired afternoon, or evenings, I will add 3.5 magnifier "reading glasses over my very strong blended bifocals, as my near vision is changing, again. I wore my 1st pr of daily eyeglasses at 5 @1/2 years old...apparently I could not see the music printed in the Beginner books, during my piano lessons; every Saturday x 6 years. As I was told, eyeglasses were more necessary, back then, than the Orthadontia for my misaligned teeth. At 70, now. I stitch often daily, between 4 & 10 pm...time our for heating/reheating my supper. The 13 yr old black foster cat, Hoodo, just knows when to join me & have my eyes take a break...kneading the 4 layered blanket...to protect my skin from her very sharp claws!!! These short breaks maybe from 5 min, to 20 minutes.. If she is the recipient of a head massage, chin scratching...with her head pointed up, eyes closed & still purring...BEST MUSIC for MY soul! I use an end table for the design board to hold floss already separated, use several needle holders with "I fill" needles, of 7 of the current colors... My Water glass (stainless steel with a cap & straw) is filled with fresh ice cubes & cold water. During these hot days, I have 2 fans making cross-current air exchanges... I occasionally have the TV on, but found out, when watching KZfaq on my large TV, there are 5 x more ads, than when watching on my phone. Commenting on the KZfaq channels must be done on my phone & for close camera shots, I use both.... How about other stitchers... what does your nest look like?
