Thanks for the info about the hoops you use! I have arthritis in both my thumbs and holding a Q-Snap is totally out for me. I can get pain holding a hoop or even holding just the fabric rolled up and stitching in hand. But a Q-Snap is always painful. I agree that using a hoop opens up the fabric - so if I’m stitching on a higher count, or even a lower count hand-dyed fabric, I like to use a hoop.I’m going to check out the Nurge hoops because nothing I’ve tried so far holds the fabric tight enough. I also need to invest in those magnetic loops! Thanks for linking them as well.

I stopped using qsnaps for the same reason that you said. My hand hurt the next day. Now I just stitch in hand. I also tried those magnetic ties but my cats were attracted to them and attacked my stitching. Made some claw holes but luckily repairable. I have a Ks Creation lap frame that I no longer use. My Scroll Lok is sitting in the corner with Women Of The Mayflower. Haven't returned to it in a longtime. Thanks Chris

Great hoops video! I had to cringe though when you showed the antique metal one with the cork inside. I remember those since that's the type of hoop I used when I was working on an embroidery project in high school (I guess that makes me an antique too! 😂). I made a terrible error of leaving my project in that hoop for too long and when I finally got back to it, there were rust stains on the fabric. Argh! My sewing teacher helped me to get most of the stain out, but unfortunately it was still noticeable.

Sorry to hear of your hoop trouble - yes, you do have to make sure they are clean and not rusty at all. Glad you were able to get the rust out.

Thank you for the info on the different types of hoops. I stitch in hand, but sometimes I can't see the threads when attempting one over one on samplers. I think I'll try the Nurge my old hoops don't get tight enough.

It's worth a try if it helps you see the threads, especially one over one. Let me know how it works out for you.

I've never seen the Nurge hoops before!! Or the spring loaded ones, but that little indent in the top would bother me too, lol! I do use the claw hair clips, as well. They work great! Get back into the swing of things with work and then make a plan for yourself. You come first! Yes, we only see a corner of you sewing room... maybe we need to see the rest of it. Lol

Thank you for sharing your hoop experience. I recently got a Wooden Nurge through Treehouse Fiber Arts and I too had to sand it in some areas. Will definitely check the plastic Nurge hoops out. I like the Smart and Cool snaps, have been using the other ones you mentioned (spool holders?) I use the Hardwicke Manor hoops, probably should put twill on mine too. The hoops with the cork was all my Aunt used when she did embroidery so I was fortunate that she gave them to me. I can’t use Q-snaps either and I just had hand surgery in June so I took my knitting and cross stitching in and they showed me the best way to manage hand tension and the best trick was to use something to prop my work up so there is less stress on the hand plus they gave me lots of exercises to help. Thanks again for this video.

@@TheCampingStitcher I love the rola frames the best, but the qsnaps work fantastic. My hands hurt with hoops and qsnaps, so I also use the hardwick hoops with the stick thingy ( technical term) on the k’s creations. Misty from luminous fiber arts had suggested that…. It’s perfect.

I use wooden hoops and love them! I have not used twill tape on then but if I remember correctly have some in my trims jar. I think I will try it to see what the difference is. I always thought it was to avoid ring marks but I just steam press them out. I never wanted plastic hoops but those Nurge (sp?) have sparked my interest. Not sure if I can find them in our country but am goung to check. I used the spring loaded when I was young and got rid of them. Didn't like the heavy and uneven (because of that indentation) tension. I have one scroll stand that has a perpetual needlepoint WIP on it. Funny but I cannot get comfortable sitting at it because you have to use a dining chair. Do you have a stand for your scroll?

I've been seeing these Nurge hoops, thanks for the review. Question for you: If you use hand dyed fabrics you can't usually wash your needlework piece....do the hoop marks come out with simple ironing? I've had some issues in the past with other hoops but it's probably my iron...time for a new one.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on hoops. I thought about buying a Nurge hoop because I’m going to be stitching a couple of designs on dark fabric and thought it might make it easier to see the holes. How do you find them when you’re holding them for any length of time? I used to use R & R frames ( same as q snaps) but find they don’t hold the tension so well and they’re uncomfortable after a while.
@TheCampingStitcher
@TheCampingStitcher Жыл бұрын
You are so welcome! I find them much more comfortable than a qsnap. I can't handle the weight of a qsnap anymore.

My daughter who is not a cross stitcher saw me moving my hoop from one spot to the other. She asked if my stitches were getting “crushed” by putting the hoop on top of the already stitched area. I’ve heard others mention that. What are your thoughts on this?
@TheCampingStitcher
@TheCampingStitcher Жыл бұрын
I think as long as you're gentle you won't have a problem - I've never had an issue with crushed stitches, but I tend to be really careful when the hoop is going over stitching. Your mileage may vary.

I really would rather not have a hoop. I like to stitch by going down through the top, then up through the bottom, all in one motion. But I found when I do this, my fabric was drawing in on itself badly. I had to aggressively iron it, to get it close to flat. So I bought a nurge hoop. It is a beautiful hoop. But I find that I’m purposely don’t get it tight in the frame so that I can sill stitch in the same motion. it just seems to be so much wasted energy to put the needle down into the fabric, then have to put your hand all the way under your fabric. I suppose getting a frame might be a better solution, so you could be a two handed stitcher. Not sure if a person could get used to that. Seems like I need something to hold in my left hand. Sorry about the long comment. I just have nobody to talk with about embroidery.
