WELCOME! Fibers & Floss Canada (Arica) and The Hygge Stitcher (Samantha) come together today in sharing a special treat with you. In celebration of Mira May (thank you Lisa with@CrossedbyFloss for creating this special event), we wanted to share our knowledge of Mirabilia Cross Stitch in hopes of enabling more stitchers to join in the experience of "Stitching a Mira". We will be releasing a 2 part special with Part 1 airing May 01, 2024 and part 2 on May 15, 2024.
We have both stitched patterns by Nora Corbett since the very beginning! We were 14 and 15 years old, visiting our LNS for the first time and started stitching together long into the wee hours of the mornings. Our stitching time together are by far some of our most treasured moments we have shared in life. Please join us while we discuss everything Mirabilia!

Samantha, thank you for your soaking advice! I have a Mira that I just finished that's been a wip for exactly 20 years this May, and it had masking tape residue very close to stitching. This technique got rid of most of the adhesive, enough that even I can barely notice! Thank you thank you! ❤
@FibersandFlossCanada

Im happy to hear you were able to remove this residue, or most of it anyways. I also have one with painters tape on the edges for the last 25 years and i dread removing it although i think i may have enough space to cut it off? Anyways, thank you for tuning in and spending your time with us :)

Thanks for tuning in this morning and sharing your time with me :) a trick a lot of ppl use is to photocopy the pattern and enlarge it at the same time. If you don’t have a device to do this I know a lot of ppl use staples as it’s cheaper than vista print etc. I don’t know if I have enough for a whole Mira parade?? I think I have only 7 completed…. Hello lovely ladies! Thank you so much for doing this video. I learned SO much. Wow! I got so excited when I saw that you did this video because I’ve been dying to start a Mirabilia this month but I was feeling totally overwhelmed. Added to the idea of starting a Mira it seems that my “counter” has been playing tricks on me of late. The count twice, stitch once advise has turned out to be more like, count thrice and frog for hours anyway!! 🤪 Not very conducive to starting a Mira! 😂 But, after watching your video and listening carefully to both of you - I’m going to give it a whirl! I decided to check out the smaller Nora Corbett Pixies and found two that I’m in love with. I ordered Lilly, the called for fabric and the floss so I can begin her right away. Can’t wait! I hope my “counter” shows up! 😬 Thank you once again for the fantastic video. Happy Stitching. 🧵🪡 Jacque🐑

Love this video ladies so much❤ I like to purchase fabric for my Nora’s and Mira’s from Pol stitches. I always buy 28ct linen or luguana and it measures at about 31 to 33 after the hand dye process! I have Enchanted Mermaid going now in a gorgeous sparkly fabric and my next in line is Ashley’s roses, I’m thinking a pale yellow that blends to apricot with a touch of pale blue towards the top! We’ll see though she may wait until fall! I have so many reg wips going to so I try to have one Mira and one Nora per year done! Mira may is the exception I only stitch on one project in May!😊 thanks ladies 😊

I have both Samantha and Maggie, Kitschy WIPS, to thank for inspiring me to start my first Mira a couple of years ago. She is done (Autumn in my Garden) and I have 3 new Mira WIPS on the go, including Siren and the Shipwreck. Never in a million years would I have thought I’d turn in to a Mira stitcher, but I’m happy I did. Can’t wait to see your Mira May progress on your gorgeous projects! One thing I thought of that might be helpful for new Mira stitchers to know, is that there have been quite a few charts with corrections/updates. Ladies, this is so timely. My first Nora….Just waiting for my fabric to arrive and soon will start geranium pixie. I chose 32 vs 28 as it a standard zweigart and not over dyed. I never considered the options for counts based on shrinkage. Hoping that my pale lilac will work. Will definitely do a floss toss. I only was able to get through your fabric section today….on my floss walk….but invaluable insight so far. Thank you!

I have to confess that I'm one of the people who refers to the Miras as 'Fancy ladies'. I guess from the outside it's just a general descriptive phrase covering queens and mermaids and fairies and pixies and angels (and anything else I've missed). With the common elements being elaborate draperies, jewels and (of course) female! I totally understand that, from the inside, there are graduations. With some people exclusively stitching fairies or mermaids or queens (because it would take two lifetimes to stitch them all!)

This was fun to watch while I was busy working on my own cross stitch WIP - not a Mira though... You think hell might freeze over and we'll get another Mirabilia with no beads at some point? There is a really beautiful pattern with a lady in a yellow/gold dress and it's one of her earliest designs, but it's out of print since many years. It's the only one I would consider stitching because, yeah, no beads, anywhere... I prefer the look of cross-stitch-only with perhaps some kreinik and treasure braid, I don't mind those.

Thank you for the wonderful and very helpful video ladies. I'm back to stitching after my "tax season hiatus" and am jumping in to Mira May with both feet. One of the projects I'm doing is Angel of the New Dawn. I bought the called for fabric which is Ice Blue and kitted it up. Today when I was getting ready to start, it "dawned" on me that I wanted a warmer fabric.....something that would represent dawn or the early morning colors. So I switched it out for a 28ct orange-pinkish Jobelin fabric I had in stash, and I think it is going to look fabulous! So you are right - don't be afraid to try something different! I can't wait to see your progress on your patterns throughout the month! Happy stitching 💙

I just started my first Mira May project! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I’m stitching the merchant mermaid and there is a lot of blending filament used in her tail, do you have any tips for stitching with it?
@FibersandFlossCanada
@FibersandFlossCanada 28 күн бұрын
Thanks for tuning in with us today :) I’ve never had any issues with blending filament. I tend to add it to the needle with the other floss and stitch away! I usually keep the threads a bit shorter though, maybe no longer than 18” length prior to positioning the needle to approx the middle of that length. Sometimes ppl find the BF can fray/separate where the head of the needle is - so every 10 stitches or so slide the needle down 1” so it doesn’t rest in the same spot for too long. Happy stitching 🧵 🪡

I've been back to cross stitching only since Dec 2023 and this is the first I've looked at Nora Corbetts designs. I'm so in love with the colors. I've ordered complete kits of 3 of my in print favs. I will wait for your next video to get the rest of the tips before I start stitching! One question I have is-is it possible to stitch these in hand (sewing method) or do I need to get a stand?

Thank you for sharing your time with us today! For Canadian sites my fav is Embroidery Marketplace and Jennifer is ridiculously fast with shipping! Other choices are traditional stitches (great selection but can be months to ship), Evertotes and Roxy Floss co in Ontario and they will kit us any custom color conversion as they only carry their own floss and fabric (which is gorgeous) and partners with a few designers like modern folk embroidery, for fabric and floss there’s an Etsy store Hand dyed by Rolanda with BEAUTIFUL stuff and lastly there’s stitch it central which is a bit more run of the mill LNS with all the basics and fancy stuff :)

Thank you for producing flosstubes that are fun, inspirational, and educational. I've been stitching many years, but still learn so much from both of you. Confession time: I started collecting MLI and NC patterns from day one before tapering off, so I have scads of early Mirabilia and Nora Corbett charts. But...I've never stitched a one! Luckily, I taught my mother to cross stitch and she was a prolific MLI/NC stitcher into her late 70s, and I was the lucky recipient of several of her beautiful pieces. (I don't remember the specific pattern, but she had a problem with one of the early Mirabilia charts and the LNS was unable to figure it out, either. So, Mom called the phone number on the chart (pre-website days) and the then Mr. Nora answered the phone. Mom asked her question, he asked Nora, then relayed the answer back to Mom. Problem solved. Different times!) Thank you, too, for the laundering tips. I've always washed my pieces after stitching them (in Ivory liquid), but never beforehand. I've also just ironed them any which way, but it makes a lot of sense to stick with the warp and weft. And I guess I need to stop using tape and Fray Check on my fabric edges, too? LOL Looking forward to Part 2!

Thank you for this tutorial. I have been wanting to stitch a Mirabilia. I am a quilter. When ironing/steaming my cotton fabric, the fabric shrinks slightly. Does this happen with linen? I am considering a 28 count because of this concern.
@FibersandFlossCanada
@FibersandFlossCanada 25 күн бұрын
It absolutely can! Linen and Aida are known to shrink the most due to the natural fibers (linen 100% flax, Aida 100% cotton). Even weaves tend to shrink less as they are a blend approx 50% cotton and 50% rayon. Great question. Thanks for spending your time with us this am :)

I really really want to stitch Shakespeare's Fairies. I am a cross stitch novice on a very tight budget, so rather than kitting it with all of the lovely name brand threads, embellishments, and gorgeous linen, I am planning on using low budget alternatives instead. The finished piece will not be as amazing as the sample piece, but since I am just a novice it does not make sense to me to purchase all of the high quality merchandise. If my first piece turns out reasonably well then next time I stitch a Mirabilia I can indulge and kit it with all of the lovely fancy materials. So quick question: The pattern calls for a 32 count linen so if I am going to dye (mottled blue) a piece of cotton aida should I get a 14 count or a 16 count? Thanks
@FibersandFlossCanada
@FibersandFlossCanada 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for tuning in Andrea :) I can appreciate your reasonable approach to kitting up your first Mirabilia. If you want to use Aida, the conversion would be 14 count is a 28 count linen or a 16 count is a 32 count linen. Now, bear in mind Aida is 100% cotton so I will shrink in the dying and or over dying/rinsing process. So I would do a 14 ct. I did a Flosstubersity series on fabric - one for just Aida. I think it would be beneficial for you to watch it to understand conversions and shrinkage etc. Happy dyeing and stitching! - Arica

I don’t understand all the hoopla about stitching Miras. There are many patterns with beads, specialty stitches and floss, linen fabrics, etc. There’s so much fuss made over basic stitching that people start thinking there’s something super challenging involved and put off just enjoying something they want to do! It’s not that hard people! One stitch at a time like everything else! Cross stitch is a very basic craft. It’s easier than color by number. If you want to make one-just do it!
