Nice! Hive looks great- those frames all full. You did exactly right to break them in increments.

Two things I love about bee keeping...the honey and honey comb wax. That's the only down fall of the flow hive is the lack of wax. It is safer for the bees, less trauma but I wonder the long term effect

I agree, I absolutely love the concept and am thinking about making the major investment of 2 hives but what if it some how effects the natural process.

I just go ahead and open mine all the way, 4 to 5 inches at a time so they don't flex to much, never seen any "overflow" and if there were any the girls would clean it up and put it back. Cost effective way is to just get the "comb" not the fancy boxes. I modified my own supers, already had one with three windows so's the g-kids wouldn't argue about who got to watch the bees :).

I am a total noob at such stuff and have zero knowledge of this process but am curious: So how long does it take to populate those six cells? What is the turnover rate/schedule for this kind of setup?
@ubenpwned8 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, it totally depends on the region and the flora available within approximately 3 miles of where you place the hive. The hive shown in the video is near Rio Vista CA on the California Delta and has many flowers that are still blooming in August even, while many places within 30 miles are experiencing a dearth, or have limited sources of nectar & pollen for the bees. Seeing as this hive is in a superior location, it did not take but 6 weeks or so to fill. I will be going back up there in 2 weeks to check on other things and I will see how full it is again.

@ubenpwned4 жыл бұрын
Hi Catalin, in the summer at the location seen in the video, we were harvesting 3 times a year, usually one time per month during the summer. Unfortunately we moved to a new location and forage here is very limited so I am not harvesting honey at this time. Our bees are healthy but they barely make enough honey for their needs.

@@CatalinCiprian I think it has worked fine for us but I would not purchase it again. You can buy 2 full standard hives for the price of the Flow hive, and I prefer to scrape the honey and wax together into a bowl and recover the wax for other projects. It was a fun experiment but I would not buy one if I could start over.

Hey Brian, question for you. I'm hearing from several beekeepers that they are finding it impossible to clean the Flow Frames after like 4 years of use. Like they have tried everything. Do you have any ideas. I was just thinking to clean them every year. But I would love to hear if you had any ideas. Thanks so much
@ubenpwned3 жыл бұрын
I tossed my flow frames in the recycle bin last year. They got some minor mold on then in winter storage and I tried everything to clean them. Even took one frame apart trying to clean the individual pieces and finally realized it's not worth the time.

@@ubenpwned Well thats discouraging. I'm going to try to just keep a better check on them every year and do maintenance so they don't get built up so bad.

That's interesting at 2:05 so the key is to not open the whole frame at once, you can open each frame partially to prevent overflow.
@ubenpwned7 жыл бұрын
Rick Deckard yes it may not be fully visible in the video but the drain pipe is completely full of honey around 2:05 and there is no room for more, so if the frame was opened further it would have spilled over the sides of the internal trough. I've done it 6 more times since the video was made and a few times i got impatient and opened it too far and had a small amount spill into the hive, but not a large amount. Thsnks for watching!

how much honey can be produced in a day??
@ubenpwned7 жыл бұрын
ayush jain it takes weeks or months for the bees to fill the frames with nectar, process it into honey, and then cap the frames. I drain one or 2 frames per month in the summer, and I get about 10 lbs per frame.
@Gungho737 жыл бұрын
It's also dependent Brian on how big the hive is, the climate aka weather and season/area (stress on getting materials/availability during flower season). I've heard reports of all filled frames within a weeks time, and reports that it took months Additionally, the frames style allows for the beeswax to remain with minimal damage. Bees use about 7kg honey to make 1kg of wax, so this aspect of the Flow system can improve your hive’s rate of honey production over time because the bees simply can reuse what they have. That being said, for those who do want to take the wax there are alternate boxes from the same company to buy (not sure if you have one because cant see internal obviously). Part of the issue I think is often patience as for many people interested they should look into beekeeping courses and/or learning under someone else locally in their area as they attempt this. That being said, you get quite a bit of honey from this method, with minimal stress to the bees which is incredibly important. And as you pointed out earlier, your grandchildren can view the experience safely without disturbing it ^_^ Hope this works out!
@Gungho737 жыл бұрын
Oh, bear in mind when I say a "weeks time" I don't mean immediately after install it. I mean after they've settled under optimal condition. Don't want to give others wrong ideas, apologies.

So what do you think of the flow hives?
@ubenpwned7 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, I think they work as advertised. If I could do it over again I probably would not buy them, since I now have 9 regular Langstroth hives and I am fine with taking them apart to harvest. Bottom line though is that they do work and all the naysayers on the bee forums were wrong. I belong to a local bee club and there are about 10 of us that have Flow hives and no one has reported any issues or problems other than a concern over the honey leaking when extracting... but doing it a little at a time seems to have stopped most of that.
@worrah7 жыл бұрын
but it seems, like u harvesting immature honey, am i right? i cannot understand this several moments - what happens with brood cells and other and how much harm this hive causing to bees in compare to ordinary hives
@ubenpwned7 жыл бұрын
the honey cells are capped, so it is not immature honey. We use a queen excluder under this box, so there is no brood in this super. I'm not sure I understand what damage you are claiming this does to the bees, they seem pretty happy to live there.
@worrah7 жыл бұрын
tnx for the answer, its more understandable now :) im worried about damage because of brood exactly
@walkingmonument7 жыл бұрын
+Сергей Катков there are no brood in the flow frames. The queen can't access those frames. All the brood will be in the boxes below the flow frames.
@captain7766 жыл бұрын
Where are the bees........how are you blocking the bees in the Brood Box, under typical conditions, when you remove that side of the hive for access..........there should be bees???
@ubenpwned6 жыл бұрын
captain776 the bees are not blocked at all. Check at 3:35 and you will see hundreds of bees sitting on the landing board. They do not normally have access to the rear of the flow frames so they can't move out of the rear area where we are working. You can see them walking around between the frames, but there is no gap for them to get out that way. They can come and go as they please from the front.
@kiwibird84416 жыл бұрын
it's the inside structure of the comb that moves, the bees are not desturbed
@captain7766 жыл бұрын
I understand that, looks like u have a divider between brood box and flow super
@ubenpwned6 жыл бұрын
captain776 that divider is simply a queen excluder. We don't want the queen accessing the flow super.
