Lyrics --------- Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their lost fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite.

@@riftmanhun5243 I get you. It is not much better even if your command of the language is decent. However, knowing the text one has to admit: Mr. De Ryke actually sings it quite clearly. Coming back to the original comment: Thank you!
@countveles
@countveles Жыл бұрын
@@riftmanhun5243 i feel the same reading william blake's poems, even though I have a very good understanding of the language. Something feels eerie about the way he wrote, but to be fair, its hard for native english speakers to understand him as well. Poets like him and percy byshee shelly feels like a world prize when I am finally able to interpret their poems, it takes a lot of fucking effort. Such profound kind of art is not meant to be translated, cause so much power is lost during the transcription. They are meant to be experienced as they are (although I think they were somewhat transcribed from the arcaic anglo-saxon language to the more modernized english, don't know for sure). But john dowland (and henry purcell for that matter) communicate very intimately with my soul. Their words cut deeply into my heart, like there, they were always etched. To me, there is something very magical, though solemn, about their pieces.

The song of overwhelming sorrow & grief..a 17th century classic! The extreme heartfelt emotion & perfection of this performance has brought me to tears! So delicate yet so forceful the message. How grateful I am to Ryan de Ryke (vocals) and Brandon Acker (lute) for sharing their gifts!.I myself am compelled to action and must pray for all those (today) enduring Hell on earth (news).

I like the deeper tone of the baritone as opposed to the usual higher pitch vocals done for this song. It's a shame he didn't also have the deeper sounding Theorbo at this time to properly accompany these dark vocals.

Why is the singer sitting dooooown! This piece requires so much support through long lines, and sitting down puts pressure on your diaphragm, hampering your breath control!
@tiagoribeiromf
@tiagoribeiromf 5 жыл бұрын
Diferent times, other aesthetics. I think, this music was originaly meant to be played in smaller/private places. So the singer would not need to project the voice as would be supposed to do in a sec.XIX/XX concert hall. I think he is sitting down to have better connection with the lute, like a chamber music formation. (sorry my english, not a native) best regards!

@richardstevens4230
@richardstevens4230 5 жыл бұрын
99% correct. Oud is fretless. What looks like frets on the neck of the lute is tied strings, which can be angled to suit the player or key, so they function as frets. And there are frets on the body that are fixed, if you look very closely. I too, am filled with curiosity, so I research as much as possible
