I love the use of different colors in what is essentially a yellow flower; it really does make the image more dynamic and interesting.

I really love your work. Very lovely. You have a very kind sweet voice which makes the tutorials alot nicer to listen to. I heard the way you said Pthalo and the way to pronounce it is with the p being silent, like Thay-low. Thought I would let you know as that is such a strange word and I used to try and say it the way you do until someone corrected me. Who knew? Lol. Thanks for the great videos. @@AnnaBucciarelli Yes, maybe the rose painting would be better to start with, thanks for the tip. There is one particular flower that I would love to be able to paint: the passion flower. It has an almost symmetrical shape with many fine "spokes" that change colour from inside to outside. I have tried it once, but I got into a mess with how and where to put masking fluid. It was fun though, and it was recognisable as a passion flower. However, it was far from being accurate, subtle and precise as your superb examples.

Oh my gosh - so beautiful! I see so many things to learn - maybe #1 is patience - 😂. Also, hard edges can be OK - I often get frustrated when I get a hard edge. Hi Anna- I’ve learned so much from your tutorials, they’ve taught me how to deal with many of the issues I struggle with as a newcomer to this medium. I know you’re working on watercolour paper blocks which, I’ve noticed still buckle. Once the painting was completely dry, did it flatten; or did you have to do something ? Also, during the pandemic I have found it difficult to find many art supplies. The Escoda brushes have been particularly difficult to find in Montreal. Any advice?

You are so welcome Heidi! Glad it was helpful and thank you so much for taking the time to leave feedback:) Yes, the blocks do peel sometimes [not very often ]. Most of the time this buckling happens with these larger blocks when i apply large multi-layer background washes. On my smaller blocks - 7 x 9 for example - it doesn't happen at all. What happened here on this 12 x 12 block is - I had too much water in the middle of the flower; then as I was working on the background, the water touched the edge - i didn't wipe away excess water and it started dissolving the glue on the side, allowing the paper to peel a little and buckle. It didn't completely flatten. My thoughts on this are: 1) I still prefer blocks any day over stretching because I have very little time and very little space. 2) When framed properly under UV glass the painting is 100% flat, so not a problem for framed pieces. 3) All my commercial work gets scanned and digitized so buckling is not an issue there either 4) For work I sell, although I rarely sell originals, I often go up to 600GSM which never buckles. I love your flowers! I am preparing to try this tutorial. But I’ve gotten confused as to which of these greens you mentioned as a group, as warm. But I’m not sure which ones you mean are warm for your background. Can you clarify? Thanks so much.

Hi Carolyn, I believe I was referring to Green Gold from Daniel Smith: amzn.to/3iuvWZM You don't have to use the same colors! It's just a recommendation. Green Gold is a combo of PY 150, PY 3, PG 36. It looks like olive green and you can find similar shade in other brands, or mix your own:)

Hi Anna I have drawn and painted a Digitalis (Foxglove). It is on Arches hot press paper. I noticed you always put in the background colour after the subject, do you think this is better than doing it first. Thank you Molly 💖

Mary, I just answered your question on the pink peony video - hope you saw it:) just to add one thing, painting light / white objects like this peony, is tricky and it’s better to do the background first in order to get the tonal values right. I didn’t because.... I don’t always follow the “rules” when I know exactly what I am planning to use for background - In this case I was planning many layers of green and wasn’t afraid of “overpainting” the light peony. I thought the point of using blocked paper was to keep the paper from buckling. It looks like it has buckled during the negative painting. Can you help me understand what’s going on?

ladyflimflam You are correct - it’s to prevent buckling; unfortunately due to the amount of water my 140lbs paper started buckling so much that the sides separated. The glue holding the sides wasn’t strong enough, and I should have gone with 300lbs to prevent it.

Could you draw an animal that doesn't have many (obvious) colors to it like for example an otter and how you would make it a bit more interesting?

Excellent question! I would find a reference photo with strong light and shadow (so the fur has many hues and highlights) and add an interesting background 😊 I think I have a brown dear stag tutorial here from last year 💗
