STORYLINE:
People gathered in Moscow on Monday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
Members of the Communist Party, headed by party leader Gennady Zyuganov gathered to lay flowers and wreaths on Brezhnev's grave.
Zyuganov said he thought Russians had much to thank Brezhnev for.
After ousting former Russian leader, Nikita Khruschev in a 1964 coup, Brezhnev spent 18 years as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, from 1964 to 1982.
He was succeeded as leader by Yuri Andropov, the former head of the secret police.
Brezhnev, who was born in 1906, died of a heart attack in November 1982.
