Oh, I didn't know Ann Wilson plays flute too. She's a great singer, really powerful voice. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was famous for guitar bowing. I think they use cello bows.

I've also been a huge fan of Heart and had no idea that Ann played flute. This is really early in their career. Ann Wilson may be the greatest female singer in rock and roll history. Heart is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

That was my first time seeing this live and was also surprise by the flute and bow! Ann & Nancey are definitely the greatest rocking sisters of all time! Yeah, straight on is one of their best but for me "Crazy On You" is my favorite by Heart, give that a listen on your spare time Heline, I know you'll like it!

Ann Wilson is one of the very greatest of vocalists during this time period and I had NO idea she played flute. How that escaped me I've no explanation for and I now want to explore if there are other songs in which she wields the flute. Thanks for making me aware of it!

Heart are one of the great rock bands and Ann Wilson one of the great rock voices. Their first album, Dreamboat Annie still sounds so fresh and yet classic. The bowing, yes definitely influenced by Jimmy Page, but I wonder if Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson sparked Anne’s use of flute, in a harder less pastoral rock setting. For lovers of early Heart, check out their 2000’s albums, Beautiful Broken, Red Velvet Car, Jupiter Darling and Fanatic, right back up there with their 70’s albums…Nancy has released a solo album this year.

70s music was often unpredictable, experimental, but still fun. There's a song from back then that uses a kazoo (Magicians Birthday from Uriah Heep).

You mentioned it was a bigger bow than a violin bow. Possibly a Cello bow? Anyway this was a great performance by Heart and I agree, Ann Wilson plays the flute very well. This is a surprisingly rare video of her playing the flute in live concert. There are some other songs by Heart that she played the flute on but I'm not sure f there are any other videos of her playing it. You did a great reaction too.!

hi heline. heart is a well known band here in the states, and the 2 main members are ANN WILSON, whom is playing the flute, and NANCY WILSON, who also sings and plays guitar. i did not know ann wilson played the flute. i never saw her play it. great video thank you. see you saturday.

She doesn't use the flute often, so it's not surprising that you wouldn't be aware she ever played it. Not sure if she uses it in any of the songs done after the 1970s.

As soon as anyone mentions using a cello bow to play a guitar, people think of Jimmy Page but I feel compelled to mention that Ritchie Blackmore also did it (he actually plays the cello on stage these days) But they weren't the first. That honor goes to Eddie Phillips, who was using a bow way back in 1963! Google him & chase up some of the music he was involved with. It's worth doing, trust me...

Yes, this is an older video when they were getting started. Ann's instrument is her voice! She rarely played flute, though she is quite good at it. Ann and her sister Nancy's harmonies are amazing. Ann is one of the greatest female rock singers of all time. Still going strong. I'm still hoping you can react to Tim Weisberg, a great flute player. I love his album with Dan Fogelberg (RIP) called Twin Sons Of Different Mothers. I love your reaction to this video. Glad you liked it and played it all the way through. Heart has recorded many beautiful songs throughout the decades.

They were very Hard Rock in their beginning. This is the Heart lineup that got them to the HOF. When this iteration of the band broke up, they never were as good as they were here. Sounds like Jethro Tull when Ann starts playing the flute. She could've filled in for Ian anytime

I can tell after reading some comments I wasn't the only one surprised by the fact that Ann plays flute. About the bow-playing guitar, I guess it's a cello bow. Heart was very influenced by Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page (Led Zep's guitarist) used it in some songs.

Heart is a great band that was quite influenced by Led Zeppelin ( Heart or at least the awilson singers were the invited to sing at a U.S. Presidential tribute to Led Zeppelin, Kennedy Center Honors, a few years back.) . I don't know what experience Ann Wilson had on flute, but I read she had formal training in singing. I don't remember hearing flute on any of their hit songs; Wikipedia lists flute as being used on several albums up to around 1985 and then not again until 2010.

I was wondering when you’d get to this … I love Annie and this is HEART at their prime. I was lucky enough to see them in 1977. She doesn’t play flute a lot … but on this tour she played on a few tunes. I saw HEART again 2 years ago and she played it once on them doing a cover of Stairway To Heaven. Before Heart was signed they did a lot of Led Zeppelin covers and the guitar/violin bow is a very Jimmy page thing to do. Heart was my favorite band in seventh grade. And to this day is probably still my favorite band… Minus the 1980 material. Thank you for the Heline !

Hi Heline, nice reaction video. Heart is one of the all time greats from the mid 70's and throughout the 80's, between Ann Wilson’s singing and her sister Nancy's guitar work, Nancy Wilson is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. If you get a chance, beings to reacted to a few songs from Jethro Tull, check out Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" and also check out The Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin." You're truly amazing! 👍👍😘😘😘

Mystery solved. Nancy is sitting off at the keyboard on the left (though I don't think she was playing) in a blue blouse you can see her get up and cross the stage and grab a guitar at the end of the clip if you watch closely. Also, here's a clip from earlier in the same performance where she's playing guitar on Heartless kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZ1-iLOQsbnZZqc.html

Refreshing that Heline is not familiar with Heart. Fine musicians but highly commercial mainstream dreck like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc. Americans: the world doesn't revolve around classic hits. Stay cool Heline.
@nyobunknown6983
@nyobunknown6983 3 жыл бұрын
@@kb9788 Wrong. In the 70s Heart was anything but commercial dreck. They played music that they liked and the public just happened to agree. It wasn't until the 80s that they went commercial. Ann Wilson hated the ballads the record companies made them play. Remember one thing. Musicians have to eat too so expecting them to starve for their art is unreasonable as you get older and have families to support. The same was true with Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles both of whom started playing music that became popular because it was good, not intentionally commercial. This was typical in the 60s and 70s when the public was far more musically sophisticated, groups played good music and people appreciated it. Just because something sells well doesn't make it bad, at least back then it didn't. Now days music is carefully crafted to appeal to a wide musically ignorant audience.

Heart are core Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, but not for their flute. :-) From this same album, the songs "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man" are all-time classics, and the deep cut is "If you love me like music I'll be your song". Technically, that "spanking the guitar with the bow" using the wood side instead of the hair side is called "col legno battuto" in classical music. It's hell on bows, though -- if you aren't rich, don't do it.

Hi Heline. I really enjoyed your reaction to the this old Heart video. I wasn't aware that Ann Wilson played flute but I have been a Heart fan for a long time. Regarding the bowing of a guitar, Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin started making it famous in the late 60's using a cello bow.
