I got this vacuum yesterday and hooked it up per the video instructions. It worked well. The vacuum is more powerful than a siphon vac of which I have a couple. I tried to make my own power vac using a pump but my sand substrate would foul it almost immediately. I have a huge plec that is a crap factory and the siphon tubes will not pick up the heavier waste. This vac gets it no problem. The nice thing is that I don't have to worry about buckets and running out of time before they fill. You can vacuum all day with this system. I got the super fine sock and it did not let any sand into my fx6. This system has a fair amount of parts but in my opinion worth the small extra hassle setting it up since it does a much better job. I still do water changes but I see myself vacuuming every few days and weekly water changes on a day that I don't vacuum. We will see how it works.

I've been using a python for years and if you just want to wash the gravel and not perform a water change this is a simple and easy tool to use. The FX6's Motor is powerful and washes the gravel effectively even with the extension tube attached. For a water change I will still use the Python and wash the gravel at the same time but for intermittently clean up this product works perfectly. The key is not to let your tank waste build up and this product encourages you to frequently wash your gravel effectively with its quick attachment and minimal mess. I purchased the FX6 on its own but this is a great attachment that utilizes the FX6's drain feature and powerful motor..........nice job Fluval. P.s. For those who are complaining about it not being free....get real, all you have to pay for is shipping.

I'm from UK, i've had mine a few weeks now, started using mine yesterday, i don't like using the end that goes into the gravel i just tilt the bottom tube a little and the gravel sucks up the tube and spins up and down until you lift the tube, what i do is move gravel from one end of the tank (about 12 Inches) so it leaves a space, when rubbish has settled clean the space you have made then put the tube into the gravel, tilt the tube a little and you will see the gravel going up and down, then after a few seconds drag the tube across the floor of the tank where you have made a space, lift the tube a few inches, tilt the tube about 45 degrees and the gravel will slide out of the tube, then repeat until all gravel cleaned, JOB DONE. i must also add, watch how much gravel you put into tube-s, if you put too much in, it goes up to the gravel stop and blocks water/gravel going up the pipe, if it does just move the lever at the top of the tubes and gravel will slide down tube, turn lever back. i'm really impressed with this gravel cleaner, the hose is a little awkward when moving cleaning tube-s around tank, could do with a flexi- hose, also the pulling power of the gravel cleaner through my FX6 is very powerful that's why i said be careful how much gravel you put in the tubes. I hope Fluval offer me a job after this honest review, LOL.

Either siphon out the window, or use a Python. You don't have to use buckets to do clean or do water changes.
@Tjita1
@Tjita1 8 жыл бұрын
People don't quite seem to understand the idea of this. First you do the gravel cleaning with this. Then you can put the hose into a bucket, turn the filter off, and open the utility valve. The water will then siphon into the bucket. Since you have a standard quick connector at the end you can of course also extend the hose to a drain if you want to, as long as the drain is lower than the lowest level you wish to drop your tank to. This is way it will completely eliminate the need to carry buckets, at least for the emptying and cleaning.

Well if you really know what you doing you can use a hose and use the same basic logic of siphoning water out of your tank into your sink you don't need buckets and you don't need the fx6 to power the gravel back it's simple physics why is everything to be made so complicated.

A couple of observations: 1) The effort to use this vacuum system is a lot more effort than simply vacuuming off the dirt, sludge and detritus into a drain. 2) Good aquarium hygiene requires the sludge, dirt and detritus from gravel cleaning to be removed from the aquarium system. Granted some is captured in the filter bag, but a lot of this waste goes back into the FX filter which appears to be connected to, and circulate water back to the aquarium. Looks like a fancy "toy" that will not help the aquarium inhabitants.

Because you couldn't just add in some filter floss or finer filter material right.
@fluval
@fluval 8 жыл бұрын
A filter bag is employed to capture debris as it passes up the Vac, and very little (if any) ends up in your filter. We supply 2 filter bags (fine and super fine), which actually provides even greater polishing than most filter media. The advantage is that you are using a strong pump (the FX itself), which allows greater flexibility for more applications with a gravel washer and provides total control over the use. From sand to very coarse gravel, there is no issue when using this super handy washer. We feel given the great convenience and effectiveness of this product, it will encourage people to perform regular maintenance, thereby benefiting aquarium inhabitants.

Joel, understood but important to consider that hook up takes places once, you can leave it connected to your FX filter. The filter bag is what you would access to clean relatively regularly.

Hi David, no reason not to use it in saltwater. In fact it makes a great vacuum for cleaning live rock surfaces, helps pull out fine debris that can clog pores etc...As for a sand substrate you do have the convenience of the filter bag within the filtration model of the FX Gravel Vac.

The FX gravel vac connects to the purge valve which then serves as the inlet to the filter, so no, it is not a function that goes on during regular operation as the inlet side of the filter is turned off.

Okay guys anyone needing an open and honest assessment about this vac. It works as the video describes but after vacuuming and turning the valves of the filter back on, it kicks back suet and foul water back into the water literally everytime. Totally defeats the object. Very frustrating. I have used the vac 4 times and each time follow this video step by step. Shame really because it's a great bit of kit as is the FX6 filter. Anyone with similar issues? I will not be using the vac again. The reason this happens is because the sock in the collection canister is designed to collect waste and fine pieces (and does a very good job at doing so) But obviously the suet and cloudy muck isn't going to be collected by the sock, so your canister fills up with this cloudy disturbed muck only to be released as a toxic bath straight back into your tank when you switch the valves back to the on position. Maybe lots of fine polishing floss would help catch some of it but either way it's inevitable you will mess your tank up with this. Please feel free to correct or advise me. The FX6 is the best filter on the market but the vac would only work properly if the water you were siphoning leaves the tank permanently :)
@fluval
@fluval 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, likely the reason you are having debris entering your aquarium after opening or closing a valve is due to the accumulated debris in the ribbed hosing of the filter. We suggest removing the hosing the next time you perform filter maintenance and giving the hoses a thorough flush with fresh tap water. We have not observed what you are describing. The filter traps the waste and particles, it does not enter the filter.

Hi Aaron my issue has nothing to do with the piping. It's the fact that when siphoning, all the muck from the gravel gets pumped straight back into the water, because the finer pieces do not get collected into the vac's sock. Many of people with the same issues.

Is it my imagination or does it look like you open the drain valve, and close the intake? Does the drain suck water through it when the intake side is closed? Seems something that could produce a mess and shorten life of the motor if I didn't see that correctly?
@fluval
@fluval 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, no, you are not imagining this ;) The motor is unaffected as the incoming water and debris are filtered through the filter media as it would be had it entered via the intake. In fact, messes are conveniently avoided when gravel washing this way. We cover this in the video.

I've discovered that to take quite a while. Then I always have to pull the pump or any sand grains etc that may have got pulled in since last cleaning tend to not allow the canister to start very well. Perhaps it is better meant for gravel substrate vs sand substrate tanks.

The intake tube looks like it was pre-primed as there is obviously water in the gravel vac prior to turning on the gravel vac valve. How do you prime it?
@fluval
@fluval 7 жыл бұрын
There is water present because of the use of the gavel washer, there is no priming involved, the filter is primed, the gravel washer system is connected to the filter which aspirates the water through it.

Looks real nice when cleaning a tank that was set up for this vid. Try that again on a filter that is 3 months in. I guarantee the water won’t be that clear. I connected the hose and as soon as it sucked some air in, the outlet blew a huge brown cloud. Is there a fix for that or will I have to put a filter sock on the outlet too.

Regular maintenance does include removing the hose assembly and rinsing them through thoroughly, from your description that event is not related to the use of the gravel vac.
@elyh777
@elyh777 6 жыл бұрын
Fluval Aquatics just for the sake of argument, I did pass a tube cleaning brush through the hoses. I’m guessing the issue is when air gets in the filter, it loosens the crap that’s built up then blowing it back into the tank. So I’ll have to upgrade the fine filter pads and or put a fine filter sock over the outtake tube. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for sharing but....you would have to also make sure there is no chance of substrate entering the impeller chamber as well as making sure that the hosing on your gravel washer fits the intake of your canister. Let us also not forget that the Fluval FX gravel vac system comes with its own filter module and media bags for extra fine filtration and easy replacement. which you would not on your existing canister filter and would be taxing your existing canister filter media more vs. the FX gravel vac system.

I am thinking about buy your fx4 for my 40gallon breeders I just bought. I am using 206 and aqua clear 110 on all my fish tanks. But now I have a total of 8 tanks which is a lot when it comes to doing water changes and cleaning my canisters and hobs. Dont get me wrong i love my fish, but i rather spend more time enjoying my fish than cleaning so many fliters. how long is the hose? can you add a 25ft hose to the area to add water from the sink? Or do I have a hose from the sink going into a bucket and the hose from the fx in there, to take the water out? I hate using the python because of the wasted water.
@fluval
@fluval 7 жыл бұрын
The FX Gravel Vac is the perfect solution to not wasting water when cleaning gravel as the debris is caught in the handy included filter bag, just clean and replace that as necessary. The filter bag in this system keeps the debris out of the filter too.

Fluval Aquatics So what you're saying then is that I should restart the pump once it is all set up. In this scenario you will be standing around with the syphon in your hand while it does the normal auto purge. I guess that's not a huge issue.
@fluval
@fluval 5 жыл бұрын
No we are not actually, we were only suggesting a thought to help you understand the simplicity of how this works. The purge you are referring to is suggested in the video to allow air trapped to escape, if we are on the same page here....
@whydoineedahandle269
@whydoineedahandle269 5 жыл бұрын
We clearly are not. I understand how it works. I am talking about the filter's operation ... when you plug it in, it runs for a few seconds and then stops for like a minute. I was able to succesfully use the filter other than the fact that the little white dome screen got clogged after a minute and then there was basically no flow to continue syphoning.
@fluval
@fluval 5 жыл бұрын
Rusty, thanks, yes this auto stop delay does this once every 12 hrs. to allow any trapped air to be evacuated out of the filter. Simply unplug and re-plug, the filter will continue operation. The white screen at the top of the gravel washer is a gravel guard which unless there is a lot of larger debris should not plug as you are now set up to regularly keep the substrate free of it.

@fluval
@fluval 7 жыл бұрын
They are totally different systems. The python uses large quantities of tap water to pull water from your aquarium, in fact environmentally this is an issue. The FX gravel vac uses the filter motor to pull debris from the gravel into a filter bag where it is easily removed, no wastage of clean tap water to do a gravel washing.

Casey, you will be pleased to know that there have been none. The drain valve has always been a great feature of the FX canister and has been problem free. the FX6 is a great cannister filter, mine has been running for several months perfectly..but honestly this 'feature' seems gimmicky. There is no alternative to water changes for your aquarium - filtering water through a sock does not change that fact. Hi Anthony, the specially-marked FX6 filters, which include a PIN code to order a free FX gravel vac is currently available across some Canadian outlets, but whether your local retailer is carrying it is not a question we can answer. Very confusing... I agree with Adam regarding the motor.... Just use a python for water changes and gravel cleaning. Leave your filter alone.
@fluval
@fluval 7 жыл бұрын
Once you try it you would see just how straight forward it is....the filter media back in the module traps the debris. While the Python is effective you are using a lot of tap water every time you use it, with the FX gravel vac you are using the motor which is already running to filter your aquarium and using a filter bag to trap waste in the gravel.
@RIPPER334
@RIPPER334 7 жыл бұрын
Fluval Aquatics But... if you turn the water off once the syphon has started, you're wasting very little... with the added bonus of everything going down the drain and out of the system... plus, you're removing old water at the same time... which is also part of required maintenance... Not knocking the filter, I wish I had one (even knowing I'd never vacuum my gravel with it), but for substrate cleaning, the python probably is a more straight forward operation, while saving a step towards water changes.

this is a good idea but the part that Fluval ether does or dose'nt relies is that. yes this is a canister filter that stays on the tank with an external vac system(cool idea). but after you vac that gravel it stays inside the filter( and they have a prefilter I saw that it was just a mesh net needs to be a small micron filter sock to be effective) and you then need to open it up and clean it. otherwise its brakes down in the filter releasing the same nutrients into the tank thus doing nearly nothing to begin with. also understand I'm talking from a saltwater perspective, and this seems to be ok for freshwater. but nearly useless for Marine
@fluval
@fluval 6 жыл бұрын
Couple of points to clarify for you. The filter sock is located before the incoming water to the filter (two sizes available, fine and super fine), it is not a mesh but a filter bag that traps very fine particles. When the cleaning is complete, remove bag and rinse thoroughly or replace, no nutrients or decomposition the next time it is used. Secondly, it is great for marine use, for both substrate and for suction cleaning the surfaces of live rock which do become plugged with organic waste, this unit uses the power of this filter to pull dirt from even fine live rock pores and traps it in the filter sock where it is removed from the system entirely. Very beneficial for marine where organic accumulation needs to be controlled and dealt with through maintenance.
