Hello Brian another tutorial to master . Always taught don't break wrist ,even used wrist straps, or tucked into sleeve. Have tried and had some great results providing my timing doesn't let the line fall in a heap on back cast . As yet can't marry it with the double haul. On wards and upwards , thank you learning every video. Regards Ian.

Great video! I got a chance of using a fly fishing set-up last weekend. I applied everything I have learned from your videos with the help from two veterans (a Japanese and a Fil-Canadian). They validated everything you taught in the videos. I had a great time using fly fishing set-up (way better than spinning and baitcasting). And as a bonus, I caught my first fish on a fly! The episode 4 of the fly casting series is excellent. I took a 6 weight out at dawn this morning and tried your recommendations till I got tired and started screwing up. Your advice is very accurate. I didn't cast to the next county, but the casts rolled right out like I knew what I was doing. I tried it with a light popper and then a larger popper (bass size). As long as I concentrate on my fulcrum point, keep my hand in the right spot on the rod, haul the line at the right time, don't let go of the line in my left hand, load the rod on both up and down cast, pay attention to the high ground behind me, only swat mosquitoes on the down cast and hold my mouth just right...it goes well. I forgot keeping a weather eye out for alligators and poisonous snakes...I am in Florida, after all. I don't remember you saying anything about loading the rod, but it seems to help. Great videos! I hope you keep them coming. Mike in Crystal River. Gotta go...big plans for this weekend (Dorian). p.s. one thing I'd like to see is something about distances goals for various weight outfits...what's a realistic goal to practice for with a 5 or 8 weight?

Excellent confirmation for me, at my local fly shop, the individual who teaches casting lessons to people, said never to use your wrist and keep your rod end up against your fore-arm the whole time. He also stated after a long day of casting he’ll have a bruise on his forearm.. I attempted to cast this way, as I am a new fly fisher, and could cast but like you said no more than 20-30 feet, I knew then he advise was ludacris and with using my wrist and utilizing the line tension I figured out on my own how to launch it 100 feet.

Just discovered this video! Your advise, gold. In other words, break your wrist back after the stop, during the drift phase. Also, the maintaining your fulcrum as stationary as possible (the elbow), I just discovered the problem I've had for years. I've been moving my elbow back and forth. Guides have tried to tell me, "I'm moving my rod back and forth to the side, it's a curved trajectory, etc." Never could understand it. "Keep your elbow, your fulcrum stationary". Now I get what I was doing wrong. When you're a beginner, your only casting with your forearm. As you progress, you tend to use more of your shoulder, moving the fulcrum back and forth. It must be taught to beginners how to advance without moving the elbow. We see competition distance casters and they do a 170° with their shoulder as the fulcrum. That's competition distance casting, not fishing casting. You don't have a hook, or a heavy beadhead on a fly, or a sinking line. Now I get it. Thank you for an excellent explanation.

Sir, I truly appreciate the work you are doing. I started fly fishing at 13, 20 years ago. Your videos have done more for my cast than I could have ever imagined. I recently added Carp to my resume after moving up to WV, and as you know accuracy and presentation are EVERYTHING. My casts are much better, I'm catching fish that absolutely punish my little tfo bvk 5wt, and frankly I'm just plain happy. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm not -too- far away and cannot wait to visit the store! Speaking of, do you have any used rods/trade-ins? Id really like to pick up a new-to-me (or good medium price) 6 or 7wt before my favorite little trout rod suffers a carp-splosion :-) Matt from WV

Great video. On your point about the elbow being the fulcrum point......totally understood. But, technically, don't you really have two fulcrum points working in tandom when also doing the wrist break?

Brian, Thanks for helping this newb out. I am wondering about line weight and how that affects the distance of a cast. I have been practicing my cast with a wool indicator on the tippet. I feel like I max out the distance at roughly 45-60'. Thoughts on line weight vs casting distance or does it sound like my technique is killing my distance. THanks!

So I am basically learning on my own. I have used these videos and after a week in the yard and 2 full days I am starting to get the basic forward cast down. One problem I am noticing throwing nymps with any weight I find I am throwing where I am wanting but seem to be forcing the nymph and split shot into the water instead of laying it down. I know you all cannot see me but if there is any suggestions would appreciate it. Hoping it's common you all may know what I'm doing wrong

He may have been right? You don't break your wrist during the stroke, but before the forward stroke begins......to "wind up". We have quite a few videos that explain this in detail. There is a time to break and a time to not.

Brian. Ive watched your casting technique over and over and I noticed something with your left hand. And that's my question. On your back cast I notice that you pull the fly line down. Is that to get the rod loaded more?

With really long casts with double pulling of the line forward and backward I see them going with the arm way backwards and forwards and more over the head. Is this now good or bad in your opinion. Just now for really really long distance casting.

i have picked up fly fishing a few years ago and have a 4 wt rod. Although I'm fishing tight streams, i want to practice the cast. What is the best advice you can give to practice on a 4 wt bc it seems you are fishing with something heavier. I've been watching your series and not getting the results i'm trying to emulate with your casts.

Great clip👌, at about 11:40 the “Fulcrum point”, finally 🏆someone is talking about the physics behind a cast a “little” 🙂, but you should go a bit farther, like what kind of lever class a single hand fly rod is, that way we all could identify better the possibles roots of our casting faults from the beginner stages to advance levels, specially once we try to pass the 60’ 70’ and above that casting mark, also, to fully understand the concept on how leverage and fulcrum can vary from a fully grown 6’ guy to a 5’6 lady. “Lefty also said, “don’t try to cast like me” Levers, and fly casting!!🏆🏆🏆 that’s something no one in this platform ever talk about it 😩, how lever works and how can the lever effect on the exercise of fly casting a single hand fly rod from one person to another, and sometimes, even to the same person, by casting a 8’ 9# fly rod, and later the same caster, use a 9’ 5# fly rod. Thank you for your videos they are really helpful to the sport. Keep up the good work 👌 Best Mag
