Fly fish for albies! Gear up and catch false albacore with a fly rod

One of the most thing things you can do with a fly rod is catch a false albacore. Few other fish compare to the screaming runs they have. One of our favorite parts of the false albacore fishery is its accessibility. If you live near the ocean on the Atlantic side of the US, you can catch an albie from boat or from shore.

Well done. And yes, consider a review on waterproof sling (and other) packs. I have a Patagonia sling that has been bombprooof for my Maine shore striper fishing. Although the zipper is brutally hard to pull through the last 1/2” to seal.

im thinking of getting a set up our little false albie/bonito is about under 3 pounds and we also have bonefish 1 to 3 pounds along with bass 1 to 3 pounds ect.... will a salt dedicated 6wt be good? i fish moslty on my kayak and i fish early morning where the wind is calm but can get up to 5 to 10mph and i plan to use 8 to 6 size flys maybe 4 size hook but keeping it very light set up since my game fish is not big no more than 5 pounds

Great question! A 6WT would be good, but if you get into deeper water at all on the kayak a 7WT or 8WT would help a lot. The lifting power on the lighter rods is diminished and you may find it hard to fight a fish vertically, even at light weights.

@@SaltwaterEdge yes i fish mostly 8 to 10 foot up to 15 to 20 foot of waters mostly and some drop offs ...my friend 6wt predator rod is about 116 grams in weight and has lot of backbone and can easy be overline by 2wt... im looking at a scott wave rod in 7wt and its 102 grams about 3.6 or so ounces which is very light for a 7wt and be it feels like a 6wt, with todays new rods they can make it lighter and stronger so maybe ill get a 7wt because its now how it was just maybe 5 years ago with current materials and ways this mid to high price range rods are .. some of this rods are so light a 8wt is like a 6wt in the hand i bet..just have pay a big price tag and not to high stick the rod. rod mostly there to cast line in a way and then the drag do the work most the time when comes to salt fish that will pull drag on you..
