Fisherman's Life

Fisherman's Life

5 жыл бұрын

Picked a spot on Google Maps in a National Forest. No trails, no roads. We hiked 10+ miles following the river. Up and down boulder, hopping from rock to rock and fishing along the way. I only brought a Blue Tarp from Home Depot to sleep under. Tons of red ants, spiders and other bugs came out at night. Wouldn't trade this trip for anything!

The thing about trout is they’re pretty fragile compared to lake or ocean fish. My own rule of thumb when it comes to any type of fresh water trout is: never yank when setting the hook to avoid putting too much strain on their mouth/head/body. Also I don’t fight them in; meaning I’d keep slight tension on them and let the trout work its way to me when it’s ready never really pulling, just taking up the slack it’s providing. Once I have the fish close enough I would then net the fish in an actual trout net and keep it in the water to release it. Same as camping, try your best to leave the fish how you found it. The key thing is finesse. Now I’m not saying this to say anything bad. This is just how I generally fish for trout. I feel if I do these steps it really gives them a better chance of surviving after being caught. I mainly do this so it can maybe provide myself and others the opportunity to keep fishing for them in the future. All I’ve said mainly applies to releasable trout, however the ones you decide to keep is up to you.

I know you wanted a brown on this trip, you gotta get out of the pocket water you are fishing and find longer runs of steady flow, they don't like fast ripping currents and plunge pools like rainbows. you should also look into getting into some cutthroat as i know northern California has a few native species.

i think you now have a pretty good handle on what fly fishing is all about. you may not catch giant fish compared to salt water fishing, but there is something about it that makes me enjoy it more than salt water fishing. maybe its the unbelievable areas of nature where it takes place. there is something about a crystal clear creek, stream or river with the back drop of mountains and rock formations that really suck you into nature. with salt water fishing, it doesnt take long before you catch big fish.....and then it becomes a common occurance. with fly fishing, you are always thinking about the time when you end up hooking a big brookie or brown. one thing you might want to do more is use dry flies with floatant applied......nothing more exciting than seeing a trout break the surface for a dry fly floating down the creek with the current. one thing you need to make sure you do with dry fly fishing is net the current manipulate the fly. and as it does gently take the slack up. you basically want the water to move the fly which gives it a natural movement. the big trout are really leery of unnatural movements of its next dinner. one other thing that is vitally important in hooking a larger fish is for you to try your best to avoid letting the fish see you. the big trout get big for a reason. i have found that the big trout will not bite anything you offer after they have seen you. you can stay low while approaching areas you havent fished yet and another biggie is avoid wearing clothing that is bright. natural colors and/or colors of the surroundings in particular surroundings work well. this may sound unnecessary to cat fish but it isnt. this is vital. sneaking up on pools and staying low and also being quiet. they can hear and they can see. their are followers on here who know exactly what i am talking about. i once fished an area that had 4-5 large rainbows in a small group that wouldnt bite anything. i tried everything. they were used to all the people fishing for them and once the people showed up and were seen, they did not bite anything. even when i showed up and was really sneaky, they wouldnt touch anything. what was wrong was, people had already been in the area prior to me being there so the gig was up. so what i did was i showed up really early in the middle of the week while it was still fairly dark. i snuck up to where they normally were and i didnt see any of them. i didnt let this frustrate me. i took a dry fly and got down low and casted it just up stream of the area that they were normally at and when the fly made its way down the current in the area, it was a frenzy. i missed the fish the first cast due to excitement, but the next cast i was ready. i set the hook and fought the brute for at least 5-10 minutes. when i got him to the net, he was 23 inches and was solid. this method pays off. trout are very smart fish. most weekender fishermen dont catch the big ones because doing things like i described never cross their minds. in this video, i saw you were fishing with a bright white shirt and i wanted to tell you so bad to ditch it and get a more natural color. take care and keep the videos coming. p.s......if you are ever in georgia, email me and i will take you to some backwoods creeks and rivers that have fish you wouldnt think would be there.

1. There are plenty of areas within National Forests where dispersed camping is prohibited. Also sone NF areas require wilderness permits. Better reach out to the USFS ranger station on the area you are interested in before planning your trip. 2. You guys need to learn how to handle trout. Not just wet hands, but you can't just throw them back in the water if you want them to survive, especially in warm weather. 3. All the fish you caught were wild. You can tell by the fins. Plus they don't stock hatchery fish in those areas. 4. You can keep your fish cool by wrapping it in cloth and keeping it wet. Evaporative cooling. Just dunk it back in water before it dries out and it will stay very cool, especially when not humid. 5. If you want 15 inch + browns from a stream, you should head down river. 6. Nice job considering it's only your 3rd time fly fishing.

@@KBuggz lol, about a thousand. If you're looking at first time fly rods though, I'd reccomend a tenkara. It's a japanese style of fly fishing that is a lot easier cause it is an 11-15foot telescopic rod that doesn't have a reel so you don't have to worry about casting or line management. For little trout like he's getting, it's absolutely perfect. Also when in a creek, don't fish in crazy fast white water. Look for deeper pools, and slacker water. The trout don't want to fight the current constantly, so that's where they'll be.

Just a couple tips here. Fish upstream.. not down. Use dry flies in late summer and fall. Stop over setting the hook and banging up the fish on the rocks. the trout you cault were all Golden Trout. Noticeable difference is in color and the distinct ovals on the side. Otherwise .. good job and and bring a tent. Helpful flies to use .. Olive or white Elk hair caddis any size. You can practice casting using a paper plate in your front yard or park on the grass using paper plates for targets.

Hell yeah!!! Feels like forever since we got a video man. By far my favorite fishing channel. You also have pretty good cooking instincts for someone not trained. I find other catch and cooks fry their fish filet and butcher the fish and waste good meat and tasty skin. People should deep fry fish that is not fresh, but when it's fresh they should do other things like pan fry where majority of the time skin side down. Or cook a fish whole, which is also nice. Love how you don't always throw away the skin.

Hey Matts: This was one of the most memorable videos of yours I have ever seen. It had everything in it from the camaraderie of you and your friends to the thrills of catching the trout. I know that next time you will catch that big one. The views of the eroded rocks was fascinating to say the least but my favourite of all was the night time lapse of the stars noting our Earth’s spin but the most stunning view was it all juxtaposed with that tree at night. Wow, it was breathtaking! Thank you so much for this very vivid and educational video. I really enjoyed it all. Cheers, Colin.

Your lucky a gang of bears didn't steal that machete and bear rape you at machete point. Lots of people talk about bear attacks but not many alaskans will tell you about the very serious problem with bear rape because they are afraid of the damage it will do to the tourism industry. You should also keep your kids close because the bears are starting to organize themselves to get involved in human trafficking and large scale drug dealing. The bear problem is much more serious than you would expect. #Bewareofbears

Check your species... what you're catching aren't Rainbow Trout. Look more like Golden Trout. I've been fly fishing the majority of my life. I have to say your hook set needs a little help. There's no need to rip those fish out of the water. The damage you'll do to them will kill them.

Hey Matt, just a note on your fly selection. The "bee" that you chose is actually a hopper pattern. The ant is a flying ant, note the middle hackle section which imitates the wings. Use those bad boys as a dry fly, the idea is that they are flying around and are blown onto the water. Love your love for the wild, keep it up!
