Video of Michael Evanko fly fishing the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The section of the river fished is off of Rt. 441 near the Canal Park and just across the river from the Brunner Island Coal Plant, run by PPL. All bass caught in this video are smallmouth bass, a species which enjoys dining on crayfish that inhabit the river. The cray fish pattern tied in this video was created by Dennis Eckrote. This video was shot on Sunday, September 23, 2017.

Hi Michael, I'm so glad I found your channel. There's lots of "fishing" channels but I rank yours as one of the best. Not only because you've filmed 2 of my local creeks but you go all over the north east to places that are accessable to the average angler. Plus you're very intelligent and give the background of places you go. Here's to another 700 and thank you! 👍😎

Joe Duca thanks Joe, really appreciate that! I've always had a passion for fishing and am glad I can share some of that with others. I love the state of Pennsylvania, and I think helping people learn how and where to catch fish is a great thing. Tight lines!

I like leech/hellgrammite patterns and of course, black wooly buggers. Size six is great. You’re also likely to hook some big channel cats: I have four over ten pounds in the Susky. Tight lines!

You are correct, the hellgrammite is very effective for Susquehanna smallmouth. I've caught bass on hellgrammite imitations, as well as live ones.

Smallies are lots of fun. I hit them a few weeks ago up at Augar Lake in the Adirondacks.

Thanks Carl, I really appreciate that. I agree, I want to one day be able to say the river is like it was in the 90s.

Paul Van Tries ,go to Turkey Run Park in Virginia, pull into the first parking lot on the left. There is a obvious path down to the river. River is much bigger there but still great wading, you will catch fish.

Hello Mike. That fly has the razmataz in it. Soon's I get a moment of peace&quiet I've got some tying in store. I've got a lg. amt. of Bob Clouser's stuff from a couple yrs. back and those cradads he ties work, work, work. I got him to tie one at the Somerset show about 10 yrs. ago. Asked if I could book a day in upcoming summer, he said no problem if had the patience to wait 2 yrs. Anyway, this is an interesting version and it's got me anxious. To quote the rest of the guys , you've got a great thing going on here. Hope you don't burn out.

zenbooter a guy named Dennis Eckrote created that pattern, he lives here in PA but doesn’t tie for profit anymore. One of the most effective patterns I’ve used for smallies on a fly rod. Thanks for your nice words. I have no intentions on of burning out!

Real long shot here since this is a four-year-old video so I don't know if you'll respond or not but how is the water depth are would I be able to get my 1860 jet boat in there to do some Smallmouth fishing I'm looking into really getting into trying some flies but the place I normally fish at is very Rocky and you're constantly in between Rock shelves and it's a very shallow and fast-moving I'm looking for something a little bit slower

I'm sure you can get a jet boat into this area from the Falmouth boat access off of Route 441. I can speak to how the smallmouth fishing will be there at this point. The PPL plant on the other side of the river has had some major fish kills in the past 2 years. I'm not sure how much the bass population has been impacted. I know there are a lot flatheads in this area.

Hi Mike, been following your channel for a little while now and really enjoy your videos! Do you happen to recall off hand what the approximate level the river was at when you fished that evening? That area is not too far from me but I'm very unfamiliar with that section of the river and don't know at what levels (USGS website) would make that river section "wadable". Thanks, and tight lines!

I just saw this even though I'm not Mike. When fishing the Susquehanna, use the USGS gauge on their website. The yellow triangles are the average flows from previous years, and you should aim to wade fish at or just below this average to ensure it is safe. The Susq conditions can change very quick

Not my king of fishing. Hooked a lot but not where it needs to be. A few were good hook sets. I almost feel bad for those fish. Ellis cove has about 2 ft of water and there are tons of fish trying to make beds and ppl are just dragging lines through them. Nice area but I won't be up there again till late November. Try for steels. None seen yet. Also I found the best cleaning and smoke house. Right a cross the street from McDonald's. I recommend the honey and hot Cajun. Lol
