Fly Fishing for "BIG" Wild Trout of the Upper Delaware, "Fishcation" spot #3

OK guys, saved the best for last. The Upper Delaware is not easy to fish, but when the fishing is good, it surely outweighs the bad. This time of year, there's a lot of traffic on the water, so it's a little hard to find water that hasn't been pounded, but we found some decent spots. Landing percentage was only slightly above 50%, so we had a bunch of get-offs, but some of the big boys we landed gave us some redemption.

Interesting to see all of those stonefly nymphs on the shore rocks. Also interesting to watch them emerge from the nymphal shucks. Wings pointed high with curled tips and then, as the veins fill and the wings gain shape they "fall" into the position we expect to see them: flat over the abdomen. Think of all the anglers who don't invest any time checking out this wonderful world of trout and all they're missing... Great video as always, my friend.

What’s so cool is that I fish a stream that converges with the Delaware, and when the temps on the D get too warm, these very fish swim up into these waters I fish. Great video.

Nice video as always Scott. I've been fishing up there since the mid 90's. It just keeps getting worse with the boats. Most of the seasoned guides will show the wading fisherman respect. It's all these newer fishermen that have their own boats that don't give you room or respect the water that your fishing. Also the west branch is one of the most easily waded waters i have fished no need for boats unless river is too high. I know there's limited access but once your in the water you can go where you want.

I always enjoy watching you crush it on the Delaware. Impressive to say the least. I was up there a couple weeks ago and had a similar experience, not with the catching lots of giant fish 😅, but with terrible stream etiquette from both boats and wading anglers. I’m always mindful of other anglers and their space, which way the are fishing, etc. Not sure if they are clueless or just don’t care. Frustrating either way and can ruin your day. A little courtesy can go a long way. I sometimes think a fishing etiquette class should be required for a fishing license the way drivers ed is for a drivers license. Hello James! Thank you very much! I usually go by the Hale Eddy gauge because it takes into account Oquaga Creek’s flow. From that gauge, 900cfs or under is a good flow for wade fishing. As far as staying up there, West Branch Anglers, Dream Catchers both are excellent, have a fly shop and a restaurant. The Delaware River Club and one more actually in Deposit, I don’t know it’s name, just have a fly shop, although the DRC has great water on it’s grounds. Also the Upper Delaware Inn in Hancock is a very nice motel, reasonable and you can still shop at any of the fly shops you’re near. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Ha ha! I can’t believe how I got in that position either. I took my fanny pack off to sit on the bank and fix my leader and try a different fly, so when I got up to get back to fishing, I was being lazy and didn’t put the fanny pack back on, wasn’t too confident I was gonna catch anything on it. Well, low and behold, it worked!! And I was caught with my pants down, metaphorically 🙄. But hey, got myself composed, plus a little luck, and we got that big boy. Glad you enjoyed it. Another awesome video. They’re still working on the Hale eddie? Do you zigzag on the river or go over and down the other side? How is wading there, going up in two weeks and interested in the wading as I’m “mature “. Tightlines
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 Жыл бұрын
Good morning Tom! It’s the Hancock bridge that they’re working on, the Hale Eddy bridge is fine. Both areas are tough to wade pertaining to the flow, very fast, so please know your limits and take a wading staff. I do have experience in these areas and know their structure pretty well, but I’m always careful when I’m in the water. When possible, I do like to break big areas into smaller sections by going straight across then going up or down 8-10 yards to another section to work. But if I can’t go straight across, I’ll work across as far as I safely can, then back out my same steps then go up or down the 8-10 yards to start a new section. If you can’t reach an area, I always attempt a Hail Mary cast to at get a drift or two through a spot, you never know, better than turning around and not even try. I have been rewarded many times on Hail Mary casts. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hey Scott, Well done as always great to see you have such consistent success there above and below the surface. I fish many of those same beats. I have been carrying 2 rods for the last few years as I fish a 10' Wt for euro nymphing and a 9' 5wt Sage X for dry fly fishing. I am thinking of going to a 10'4 wt as a do all so I can stop carrying 2 rods. I believe you're fishing a 10' 4 wt for this trip. Are there any 10' 4 wt rods that you recommend. What is your leader set up when nymphing? Thanks very much.

Hello brother! Well, I’m using a G Loomis NRX+ 10ft/4wt and I’m very pleased with it. I like fast action rods for a dual purpose rod, nymphing and dry flies, as far as other rods , there are many comparable rods, but your personal preference according to your price range. Please see last Summer’s video called “My Leader Setup” for a detailed explanation of how and why I do what I do. Keep it simple, you can train yourself to adjust to whatever works best for you and makes things easier and successful. Although, I’ve got to say, the best most expensive equipment does not make a better fisherman, practice your technique, whichever you choose, get proficient with it, presentation of your fly or flies is 90% of the success, then learn to read water effectively, wading and fish with a methodical approach, and fish with the belief that there are fish everywhere! Don’t overlook any possible spots, I fish the Delaware from bank to bank if I can safely get there, and deep as well as skinny water, fast or glassy smooth water. Hope this helps. Hi Scott haven’t talked to you in a while. First I totally enjoyed your video on the Delaware River. Some questions! We re you mostly fishing above the west branch angler or below? I think you started out at the hail eddy bridge? Second I noticed that when you are fishing a tandem nymph rig your tying from the eye and not from the bend of the hook!, is there a specific reason for this? Did you fish any top water iso drys? What time of year were you fishing? I’m going to be fishing for three days at the end of the month. Any advice would be appreciated. I agree with you regarding the drift boat. Anytime I’ve fished from a drift boat they have always been mindful of the Wade fisherman. Thanks for another great video

Hello Michael! Well, I gotta lot of answers. I fished a little around Hale Eddy a a little higher upstream, but most of my fishing this video was around Hancock. About half of this video I was dry fly fishing with an Isonychia, Sulphur, and a Hendrickson and a dark caddis. All those flies I listed should still be good to use except the Hendrickson, they’re done. Plus a good supply of BWOs and different sizes of Rusty or red quill spinners. As for underneath, a golden stonefly nymph, Globug egg patterns and always pheasant tails 18-20. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun! Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Another great video, Scott! Thanks for taking us along. I was just curious, and my apologies if you've answered this question before, but how do you go about dealing with the rock snot? It's always frustrated me when nymphing the WB, so I am just wondering if you have strategies that have helped you deal with it? My assumption would be to reduce weight, but I always think that will hamper my ability to get to the fish. Thanks again!+ +
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 Жыл бұрын
Hi Buddy! Well, I really don’t have issues with the rock snot, I rarely get it on my rig. Now, I do have a lot of problems above Barking Dog when nymphing with algae throughout the water column, horrible up in Deposit and more so in the Summer. So that time of year I mainly dry fly fish in Deposit and I’m ok with nymphing from BD and below. And like you said, it’s a trial and error with managing your weight to get down to the fish and not too much on the bottom to get into too many snags or the rock scum. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 That's the exact section I was speaking of, sorry I was not more specific! Thanks for your response SCOTT. one thing. Why do you attach your tandem set using the eye of the hook instead of the hook bend at the tail end of the fly?
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 Жыл бұрын
Oh yes, sorry, honestly at first I thought it would help with less foul hookups, but it doesn’t. But I think now it’s much easier to tie on your in between tippet section vs the bend of the hooks. Sometimes I still use the bend method if the hook has a barb or I’m using my wiggle nymph. Really not much different. If you’re more comfortable tying off the barb and you’re having success, that’s perfectly fine. If you wanna try off the eyes, try it for a full day or two and give it an honest chance.

@pawoodsnwater7551

Hello Joe! Compared to the Lehigh, the Upper Delaware is a cakewalk! Sooo, much easier than the Lehigh. Every single step in the Lehigh is dangerous , wading staff or not. The Delaware is big water and can be intimidating, you really got to know how to read the water up there for fishing and wading. If you hit it right, anyone can have a great day there, but honestly, for consistent success, that comes with more time up there on the water just leaning more about the fish and the river system. But my videos should help shorten the learning curve. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
