What more can I say about the Upper Delaware River and it's branches that I haven't already said? I've been fly fishing for 45+ years and it's a big statement for me to say, "My best day ever", but it was. Landing 4 big boy 20 inchers, plus another 4-5 close to 20" that got off, I'm pretty sure I'll never repeat that. So much drama today, all the way up to the last fish netted. Kept the same fly combination all day, the Globug up top, then my Isonychia (AKA. Scott's Big Brown Nymph), then the Pheasant Tail. And how "bout that Hail Mary Brownie!? Let's just say, divine intervention, HA! Don't forget to check out Holsingers Fly Shop's website, give them a call to order Scott's Big brown Nymph in size 12-3XL for the regular nymph or the wiggle version in a size 16 for the thorax with a size 16-1XL for the abdomen, both with either brown or yellow Lively Legz. Also order my Pheasant Tail with the Ice Dub UV shrimp thorax in sizes 18 and 20 with brown or yellow Lively Legz.

Congrats Scott on the great day! Its always serious business when the big boys and girls come out to play! Its very hard to imagine how many fish are really in that river when its slow or only the dinks are biting, but when that window opens.........its amazing! One thing is for sure, no matter the day, the WB never disappoints!

You have a lot of really good days. But when I watched this video, it TRULY was a very special day. Rob Deddy Hi Rob! I’m so glad you enjoyed it the way I did, ha! Full of action and surprises. Thank God I had my GoPro that day! I think staying up there for a couple days really helps because when I have nothing to do but fish, I’m committed no matter what the circumstances are, heat, rain, sun, wind, bugs or no bugs, so I fish, and you never know which factor is gonna put the fish on the feed, but if you’re there with your line in the water, you’re ready and maybe you just might hit it right and experience a”best day ever”. Thanks for watching and commenting, you gave me a big smile 😊

Great video Scott, Love the fog over the water in the morning I have seen that alot this summer. Call your shots like your playing pool, (big swirl, Hail Mary) everthing was clicking. Can you explain the reason for backing out instead of just turning around and moving 10 yards downstream and then start fishing across the river. Do you do that most of the time? Or was that just something for the this river? Have you tried the sinker as the anchor of your rig, pro/cons. If it is too much to comment on maybe you can address it in an upcoming video. What a great ride home you must of had, going over and over that incredible day. Stay safe
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 жыл бұрын
Rich McGinn Hi Rich! That particular section on the river, my second spot, I did not want to go all the way over to the other side because I thought I was going to get some top water action and that other side is where big brownies usually rise and I didn’t wanna go over there and disturb the area. Lately working downstream instead of upstream has been working well for me, first when I work downstream I usually get more hits on my swing and hang because the area downstream is not disturbed yet and while I’m wading the fish downstream are feeding and getting all worked up from the nymphs I’m kicking around wading upstream from the fish. On small streams I do usually work upstream. I particularly don’t like the drop shot style nymph rig or any rig where your heaviest point fly is at the bottom. First I hate how it casts, it’s more like a lob with big hang time and with my swing and hang, my lightest fly on the bottom is seen as an emerging bug and I think that’s why that technique is so effective. Using a water load cast, I can keep my cast, when needed, very low for windy conditions and it’s a much easier cast to perform, you can even be lazy with it and still be accurate and effective. On big waters, I can Nymph effectively at longer distances, if possible I don’t like being right on top of the fish like on a small stream, I never want to spook a fish. I’m not always looking for the perfect drag free drift, I just need to place it effectively in front of that fish with a “good enough” presentation for him to hit it. I don’t want to risk him knowing I’m there for the sake of a perfect drag free drift. I get so many fish on the hang and swing and those parts of my drift are totally under drag, but, it’s a managed controlled drag. At times, I do go against orthodox traditional thought, but for me, very effective. Kind of long winded, but I hope that explains a little more, some of my technique. Appreciate your question and support.

PA WOODS N WATER lol Sorry I missed that response - that’s exactly what I was looking for. I’m relatively new to the Delaware… I’m assuming you can find fish all over and equally distributed everywhere, or is there something specifically you look for when you walk into the water? Thanks again.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 жыл бұрын
Bill Davies Well, I do like riffles, from skinny to deep. This time of the year, the NY water seems to be more predictable with bugs and feeding fish then the lower PA water, but that statement could bite me in the butt if I bet money on it. So, honestly it’s all good on their certain days but I’d lean more upstream for consistency.

You didn't have any fun on this video did you? lol Love your reaction when you lose a big fish. Those big brownies must have thought it was still dark with the fog on the water. The rain the night before definitely turned those big brownies on. You hit it just right. Was you using your 10' 4wt rod? Like I said in another video you are the greatest fisherman I know. Wow! Wow! Wow! I just love your Delaware videos. I fish the river frequently and NEVER see anyone catch the number of trout you do! Your technique "looks" so simple but like many skills-- the devil is in the details. While you catch fish all day, it seems to me that, especially on the West Branch, your very early morning nymphing appears to be the most consistently successful on most days, Is that true? Also, do you still put your split shot about 12" above your first fly? You NEVER seem to tangle your rig--three flies, split shot and all!!!! Thanks-you ae skilled!!!
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 жыл бұрын
James Vaughan Hi James! Yes, yes, and yes. Ha! Thank you very much. Yes, mornings are typically my hot period, from the crack of dawn until around 9-10am. A lot of the big boys and all fish, move up into the shallow riffs at nighttime to feed and are still in there for much of the morning. Strategic silent, careful wading won’t spook them out if you’re stealthy. I don’t have set location or weight I use for splitshot, all depends on the depth and flow of the water I’m fishing. I’m constantly managing my weight all day. Whatever weight I start with, I micro adjust that weight before I try and add or take off weight. Micro adjust meaning, I’ll usually start out with my weight 7-8” above my top fly, if I want it to sink faster or deeper I’ll slide it closer to the top fly up to about 4”, not any closer. If I want my rig to sink slower or not as deep then I’ll slide the weight further up from my top fly. If those adjustments don’t work then I’ll add or take away splitshots. Another big thing is keeping your rod hand steady during the drift so you can focus on your focal point better, mine is the somewhere on the belly of my line. Helps you detect those subtle hits. Also my rig doesn’t tangle as much when I’m casting because I build my tandem rig from heaviest fly up top to lightest fly at the bottom. I use a water load cast to flip or fling my rig upstream and I try to do a more open loop cast, not a tight loop, to keep my rig away from the rest of my line and leader. Thanks for watching and your question.

TD Polk Hello! Sure! I mostly tye it on a Tiemco 2499 hook size 16, sometimes I’ll use a 2488 or a 2457, always size 16. Sometimes I’ll use a 3/32 gold bead, sometimes no bead but I’ll usually use a #1 splitshot if it has no bead, unless I’m fishing real skinny water. Globugs take long to sink. The color is egg using the original Globug material, basically a pale yellow, on stockies a hot pink works really well too. Good luck, one of my best fish catchers.

Joe Gott Hi Joe! Well, I do seriously try to be open without being too specific, for obvious reasons. Please check out Paul Weamers book, The Fly Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River and Its Branches. On all three river systems, he gives all the open public access and boat access areas, he gives names of the areas, where you can park and road names. He even talks about how each spot fishes, where he usually finds fish in each spot. The area at WBA property is private to guests only, but there’s definitely many many areas just as good throughout all 3 river systems. I’m sorry I can’t be even more specific but there’s a lot of information available in all my videos that should help everyone out get into some fish. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.

Took me a couple days to watch the whole video but this is surely one of your best, and that's saying a lot. How do you like the 4wt NRX? I'm looking for a euro specific rod that is strong enough to handle those Delaware fish and some +30" fall runners. I'm fishing a 10' 3 Clearwater that has been awesome, but it's just a little small when you hook those +20" guys...

Jaimelapoesie Hi Jamie! Thank you very much. I really really like the NRX+, I’m using the 10ft/4wt, to me it’s perfect for the Delaware, but if you’re looking for a rod to handle more 20”-30” fish, consistently and all day, I think I’d lean towards a 10ft/5wt. Honestly there’s a ton a great 5wt rods out there, and if your gonna be putting out $700-$900 for a high end rod, I’d want to test it in hand or better yet, on the water, if that’s possible. You say euro specific, I’m thinking more an 11 foot rod and they’re more moderately priced $300-$500. Again, a lot of good rods out there. I love my Echo Shadow X rod. Really it comes down to you and what’s comfortable to you. Best option, compare what’s available to you putting the rods in your own hand, if you can’t, read up as much information about the rods, check warranties and remember, you said you’re targeting 20-30” fish, that’s a tall order if you’re planning on using it for average size trout also. I’m still thinking a 5wt would better cover that. Happy shopping!

Yo Scott. Got to digest this video over the weekend. Wow what an epic day. I love that feeling when a large Delaware trout starts shaking its head and you are holding onto dear life. Those jumps are not random, I think those large trout have a method to popping hooks off with their jumps. That one huge brownie jumped like 6 times, that was amazing. Your reel didn't scream so much this video and you didnt lose too many. I think the hook sets while nymphing are not as good compared to hook sets for dry flies. I have lost only 1 on dries on the WB. Lose like 50% nymphing.

@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 жыл бұрын
Trevor Corriere Hey Trevor! Thank you buddy! I’ve never been one to play fish longer than I have to. Once I hook them, I feel it’s my job to get them in as quick as possible and release safely. I prefer to fight them by hand, personally I feel more in control of the fight, when they get themselves on the reel or scream out drag, it is super exciting but it’s them doing that, not me putting them on the reel so they can pull out drag. Very easy to overplay a fish, if they build up too much lactic acid, even though they may appear to swim away ok, they could still go belly up minutes afterward, I’ve seen it happen many times to guys who overplay fish. A lot of my fish get off right before I land them because, once I get their head above the surface I try to drag them over quickly into the net and sometimes they wiggle and splash and get off, I’m ok with that. If you let them keep their head down, they’ll usually control the fight more than the fisherman and letting them swim around until they’re exhausted is sure to kill them. Once their head breaks the surface most times they’re helpless and very easy to drag them over to my net, especially stockies. Thank you for your question.

Hi Scott. Longtime fan of your videos. You're quite the fisherman and your nymphing technique and rigs are great. Many thanks for posting your enjoyable and informative videos. As a fisherman of many of the same streams, particularly the upper Delaware system (West Branch is a gem), I wanted to ask you about your catch percentages with respect to time of day (early morning, mid morning, late morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, evening), particularly when it comes to nymphing. Have you had consistent success throughout the day nymphing, or much better early or late mornings, or ....? While I can anticipate your answer would be "it varies" or "depends on what's hatching that day/week", I'm hoping that you've noticed a general trend of catching more (nymphing) early vs later or something like that. I'd also be interested in hearing what rig or technique changes you make throughout the day as the sun gets higher ...if you change anything at all. Again, thanks for your videos and sharing your insights. Tight lines - DH

David Lastname Hello Dave! Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, I generally do better first thing in the morning from dawn until around 10am. Most fish in the evening and nighttime hours move up into the shallow riffs to feed, and if you carefully wade you will not spook them out, they’re up in there to feed , not rest, usually they’re receptive to nymphs drifted by them. I’m saying this is a FACT for me year round, even in the dead of Winter in freezing temps. If you look through my Winter videos, I usually catch more fish first thing in the morning, a lot of times on my first couple casts. I don’t change my rig or fly setup unless something is not producing. Generally, I run an attractor fly, Globug or mopfly or worm or whatever, up top as an attractor to catch the fishes attention, hoping that he sees it and moves in the direction of my rig or sees the other flies and goes for one of them. Fly changes are dependent on what’s happening bug wise on the water. More important is managing my weight constantly throughout the day depending on the flow and depth of the water. In Winter, I catch way more fish in the riffs than I do in deep holding water, I blow that theory outta the water. Fish feed year round and they go where the food is , way more food in the riffs, even in the Winter. Now obviously, fish’s feeding habits can change where weather is a factor, so mid day heavy feeding is possible, as it was a week after this day in the video. Exactly a week later , I did well in the morning, I came back to WBA around 1pm to just casually fish around on their property. Little did I know I was going to have another “Best day ever”. I caught 18 fish right out front at WBA from 1-4pm, that day landing 28/39 hookups. So, no hard fast rule, that’s what I love about fly fishing, on a dime, things can change, gotta be prepared, be hopeful and stick with it. If you’re on the water regularly, you will experience that. Hope this helps you. Thank you for watching and your questions and all your support.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 Scott, thank you very much for your thorough (and quick!) reply! Excellent feedback and useful information. Like you, I fish much of the WB and have spent many, many days fishing right in front of the WBA cabins (which is heavily fished water). On my best day with great (usually cloudy/drizzly) conditions, fishing a 2 nymph and large dry fly indicator, maybe I've had ~15 takes in a 3 hour period in that stretch. ...so your tried and true 3 fly rig (and undoubtedly your technique too) is clearly superior to mine. I'll be on the WB next weekend and will be trying your "attractor on top" nymphing approach and will let you know how I fare. If you don't mind, I have three additional questions for you that I've been wanting to ask: - what spacing do you use between your 3 (underwater) flies and do you ever vary that spacing? - I would imagine that in most river depths and speeds, you manage your weight so as to "feel" the bottom of the river with the weight and allow your unweighted or weighted flies to drift at a slightly slower than (deep) water speed. Do I have this right, or do you manage your weight (both split shot and nymph weights) in some other manner? - I've seen you utilize a furled leader in some of your videos (though, it's not clear to me what percentage of the time you do this when nymphing). Can you advise when and why you would choose a furled leader (with appropriate tippet at the end) over a more conventional either mono tapered leader or a multi-section tied tapered leader? Once again Scott, thank you for all that you do to help folks become better and more knowledgeable fly fishers! I hope to see you out on the river one of these days!
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 жыл бұрын
David Lastname Ok, this is gonna be a long one, ha! I like around 14-15” between my flies, when it gets below 12” I’ll change it out, back to 15”. On all my reeIs I use Cutthroat Furled Leaders, usually the 50” nymphing leader. Why? Because absolutely no memory, lays out perfectly straight every time, usually last me up to 2 years. They have three types, one all green and two with sighters built in , in a chartreuse or bright orange color. I usually tie off of it 5ft of 4x flouro then either build my tandem rig all outta 4x or 3ft of 5x or smaller if dry fly fishing. If you know you’re going to be dry flyfishing right off the bat, you gotta treat the furled leader with floatant. If you switch over to dries after nymphing first, I just cut off my tandem rig as one piece then add 3ft of my dry fly tippet and put my dry fly on and just go fish, the furled leader sinks a little but never really an issue with my presentation. Now, as far as weight goes, I manage my weight all day long, frequently changing according to water flow and depth. I NEVER depend on “feeling” a hit when nymphing. I believe nymphing is 100% visual. I believe if you feel a hit all the way up your line, through your rod and into your hands, you’re already late on the hookset. I believe the all mono rig claims to help you “feel” but I bet most guys actually see something that indicates a hit before feeling the hit. Yes, there’s definitely times I feel an obvious hit but not the subtle or long distance hits. I would challenge guys who believe that, to close their eyes after they cast and see how many fish they catch, ha! My weight adjustment is technical, I usually start out with a #4 Dinsmore shot about 7-8” above my top fly, then if needed I micro adjust before I add or take away any more shots. Micro adjust meaning, if I want it to not sink as deep, I’ll move the shot further away, up to 12”, if it’s still too deep then I’ll change it out for a smaller shot. Vice versa, if it’s not sinking enough , I’ll slide the shot closer to the top fly up to 4” away, if still not sinking I’ll add either another shot or change it out for a bigger shot. A quite winded explanation but hope that helps.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 Scott, another excellent, detailed response. Thank you so much! I like how you slide the shot along the leader to adjust fly depth rather than automatically adding weight ...which makes the takes harder to detect. I'm excited to employ your rig and technique next weekend on the WB (will be up at the Dreamcatcher) and am even tying up some wiggle iso nymphs (looks like a great pattern!) and various Glo bugs. You've also inspired me to try Pine Creek in the near future. Looks like a beautiful place and stream! Thank you again and I'll be sure to post how I do.

Maxwell Rich Hi Max! Ok, here we go. Off my fly line I use a 50” Cutthroat Furled Leader, off that I tye in 5ft of 4x flouro, then I build my tandem rig, all out of 4x flouro also. I usually use three flies tied off either the eye of the hook or the bend. Heaviest fly up top, lightest fly at the bottom, 13-15” between the flies, splitshot is placed above the top fly. When I switch over to dries, very simple, all I do is cut off my tandem rig as one piece then tie on 3ft of 5x or whatever tippet size you’re using. I won’t jump down more than two sizes without tapering it tho. So my overall leader length is generally around 12ft. High muddy or off colored water is streamer time, you can wade but very limited with high water, much better success from a drift boat on those days.
