You will never believe what happened to me while fly fishing on the Davidson River. This brown trout was massive and ate a size 22 midge on 6X tippet. The fight took me 200yds downstream over the course of 10 mins. Check it out!

About 20 years ago, I fished the Davidson for the first time, knowing nothing about it. At that point in my life, I had been flyfishing since age 10, or 50 years, I'm now 80 and still going. In the late afternoon, I couldn't make anything happen; the water was very low and the fish spooky. Returning in the AM, every run was occupied, so I moved upstream above the bridge to the last sizeable pool near the hatchery. There were three 20" plus rainbows ansd several smaller ones. I was still mystified as to how such small water could support so many large fish and walked over to the hatchery and asked a fellow on a tractor if they provided supplemental feeding, and was told absolutely not. Back at the pool, I threw everything in my vest, landing 4 small boys, but the big boys resisted. Suddenly, a female mallard came flying down the river and landed nearly at my feet. she began dipping and swallowing something. Then I understood everything. She was eating dead 2-3 inch fingerlings that came out of the pipe from the hatchery when they flushed the runs. Back to the car, dug through boxes and found the zonkers I used in winter on the Hiwassee in TN. Tied one on and first cast, got one of the big boys. Over the next hour I landed all 3 of them, largest about 25" - net was marked but she curled around in it. When asked how I figured it out, I simply say "a duck showed me."

Wow! thats a great story, I love how you took the time to slow down and observe your surroundings to figure out what was going on in the river. to me stories like that embody the spirit of fly fishing. in your 70 years of fly fishing, what is your favorite place you have fly fished?

Walked up right as you were landing that fish. I have a picture of someone taking a picture of you holding that fish. Old fella kept on about how he knew his rod length and that it was a 25’r! Killer fish, man. Great stuff.

Hey man great job. I live here in Brevard and guide the area this past winter was insane I got 14 fish over 4 lb. Biggest was close to 6 lb. Im sure I caught that same fish 4 times lol Not sure where your from but if you come back this way let me know and I can show you some spots maybe if you don't know them already. Those small flies are the ticket on Davidson!!!! I can go sometimes and get over 70 fish a day sometimes. Lol I'm a traditional fly fisherman and was taught by Lefty Kreh him self when I was 15 to 17 in Baltimore MD. Check my page out a a few months back and through winter. I slow down on trout this time of year because everyone wants to hit the lake for bass. Lol he it me up sometime I take people out all the time for free when I'm not booked and I'm on the water at least 4 to 5 days a week.

Good luck! I was there Tuesday with a buddy and the fish were pretty active. Water temps were 60°-65°F, lots of fish were in the faster riffles.

What fly rod, reel , and line setup you have ? I want to get into it.
@isaacness
@isaacness Жыл бұрын
Hey there, I use mostly Sage rods, Lamson reels, and Rio gold line. For getting started in fly fishing I would recommend one of the beginner outfits from companies like Orvis, LL Bean, and Redington. look for a 9 foot 5 weight rod with a matching reel/line. These beginner set ups are plenty good enough to catch any trout you come across!

Great job Isaac, holding that toad on a 22! It's not uncommon for a big Brown to straighten that hook on a last second power play to swim to freedom! Would love to read your book, is it out yet?

Nice video. But at the end of the video you can see in your sunglasses that you are holding the camera and looking at it an driving. Not safe at all. Very unsafe. You can have very easily killed someone. Please start pulling over an finish your video. The River would have been a much better backdrop than the inside of your vehicle. Please be safe. Keep fishing an let us know the name of your book.

Hey Jason, glad you liked the video and appreciate the concern. plain and simple you are right, Ill try to make sure to pull over next time. Just a little added context for this, the road I was on is an infrequently travelled forest road and I could see that nobody was coming up

Sweet!! its been low and clear recently so fish have been a bit skiddish. were having a bit of a cold snap also so target the deeper pools with nymphs and you should catch. Ive been doing good on a #18 pheasant tail with a #20-22 zebra midge dropped behind it.
