Ditch the pin and the off-set bead. Not only is this version easier to tie, but it has even more movement than the balanced version!
Materials:
Hook - Firehole Sticks 551
Bead - Wapsi 2.8mm tungsten Brown metallic
Thread - veevus 16/0 white GSP, UTC 140 denier white, Uni-Thread 70D rusty brown
Rib - Ultrawire black small, veevus holo tinsel small brown

Solid design! Since you are compositing the dubbing loop you might like SF blend fibers ... it's a slinky fiber and angel hair mixture ... some of the fibers have straight synthetic fibers that aren't slinky... comes in a ton of colors including midnight black with red accents, also a white with UV angel hair both look a lot like the two flies you show in the video. The pseudo hair you are using seems to be like craft fur so you probably won't get the same swim out of SF blend for the tail but for the body the SF blend would probably work well.

Well done! Soooo much easier. I tie a similar baitfish/leech pattern for bass and crappie on a 1/32 and 1/16 jig head. Love psuedo hair, better than craft fur in many instances. Cheers!

Great tye!! Thanks for sharing!!! ..I am going to tie this pattern on a 1/80th and 1/64th jig head for crappie. Will use some muddy water colors like orange, pink and chartreuse..I think it will be a fish catching fool!!!

Love the channel, appreciate the free knowledge. A very cheap substitute for the pseudo hair is the Hobby Lobby faux fur. It's great for all kinds of small streamer/leach patterns. It doesn't come in a whole lot of colors, but it does have the basics. Stay away from the multi color patches though, they have shorter hair fibers

Any fly can be a balanced fly! Tie on a regular leach and throw a half hitch in the middle. Cinch it tight with the line pointing up. INSTANT BALANCED FLY.😋

Any hints on the peas and carrots dubbing? I’m sure if I looked close I could piece it together but any info would be appreciated.

Great pattern, I'm going to find those materials but I feel like the recipe might not line up with what's being tied........... I'd really like to know what bead it is that's shaped that way.

They go by a few different names, by various companies. Head-turner beads, drop-beads, insta-jig beads, offset beads. I use a local online shop flyfishfood.com.

Thanks so much for all of the info you share. I really appreciate your thorough and relaxed style. I just bought the 6 wt switch chucker line that I plan to use on an 11' switch rod. What size is the Lamson reel you show in your leader video? Also, what reel and size is the one with the sinking line? Thanks again.
@SoggySleeves
@SoggySleeves Жыл бұрын
I go big with my reels when using the switch chucker line. The Lamson reel I have is their -9+ size. Made to pair with 8-10 weight single hand rods. So it goes well with 6-7 weight switch rods. And same thing with the reel in the sinking line video. I like to pack that reel full with as much backing and running line as possible. So the 9-weight equivalent there as well. It’s tough cause every reel manufacturer seems to have a different way of describing their sizes. The manufacturers websites will usually have a description explaining their sizing. In my opinion, it’s better to go bigger and load it with more backing if you need to. Especially for Pyramid Lake.

I can't find the tear drop beads you are using. I bought some Fulling Mill 3.0 mm tactical tungsten beads. They are the right shape but they don't fit on a Firehole #8 hook. Can you tell me where to buy the beads and what size you are using?

Most local fly shops, if they don’t carry them, will still order them in for you. Also, flyfishfood.com and flyfishsd.com carry them. They are called Insta-jig beads. Companies like Hairline have them. I use as big as a 4.6mm and as small as a 2.8mm. I will use different size beads on the same size hooks just so I have leeches a different weights. Sometimes I’ll need flies that sink like a rock, other times I want a fly that sinks slowly so I can fish it longer as it drops.

If you’re local fly shop doesn’t have them, I bet they can order them for you. But if not, here’s a couple of my favorite websites that carry them. Flyfishsd.com Flyfishfood.com Unfortunately, it seems like they don’t currently carry many colors. But I use nail polish for chartreuse. Tim Flagler has a great tutorial for painting beads on his KZfaq page, tightlinevideo.

@@SoggySleeves what size are you using for pyrmid? 3mm?
@SoggySleeves
@SoggySleeves Жыл бұрын
@@mercertevyn sometimes I’ll go as big as the 4.6 mm beads. But mostly I’m sticking in the 3.3-3.8mm range. I also occasionally use 2.8mm ones. So I guess I would recommend tying the majority of them in that mid-range, but still have a few of the heavier, and lighter options. I’ll throw those heavier ones on in high-wind/big wave conditions to ensure I’m staying tight to those flies. I’ll use those lighter ones in calm conditions so I can prolong that drop.
