Lance is far too humble, he is one of the best in the world. As a WFFC and America Cup sector judge I get to see the best and I can assure you that Lance and Devin are masters. Both winning individual medals which is rare for U.S. anglers. (Only 3 have ever done it.) Using Euro has increased my catch rate by 3 to 4 times than my indicator friends who are all switching.

Great class. Thanks. Dropper loops came up in the Q&A. I've been using them lately on my last few outings and love them. I learned about dropper loops from Kelly Galloup's drop-shot nymphing video. I tie a perfection loop onto 5x nylon tippet and cut it at 6". Attach the loop to the main leader with a half-hitch. They slide, so you need to attach above a knot or even a movable 'backing barrel' type stopper. Nice thing is the nylon is stiffer than the floro of the main leader and the half hitch attachment puts the dropper at 90-deg to the leader. I get very few, if any, tangles and you can switch out for a new dropper loop when the first one gets too short.

That was by far the most information I have been able to find in a single video. Thank you very much! Quick question about the leaders. When building a leader, the section prior to the sighter material was the Amnesia, or you said you could just use the 12# chameleon. What is the advantage to the Amnesia? Is it performance, strength, doubles as sighter, or less memory?

Caught plenty on 5-10lb fish on a 3wt 10,8" just dont high stick fish, mostly on 16s in 1 feet of water and he is absolutely right the normal clinch is 100x better than the improved clinch. Also a great question on the heavier fly, I fish mine the same way, heavier fly on dropper and you can swap it out for a dry and fish instantly again too

Thanks for the great info. I have a couple of ?’s. I have been using a BVK 10’ 4wt rod for a few years. I have caught many, many, trout euro nymphing with this rod. I can’t help but wonder though if I could feel more strikes on a 3wt rod. Also, I still have to use shot, no matter how heavy I make my flies they are still not heavy enough to achieve depth. Any suggestions on either subject? With shot, the 4wt, and a 2 nymph rig I have done very well, but I’m always looking to improve. Thanks in advance for any time you could take to answer.
@FlyFishFood4 жыл бұрын
Careful Kev a lighter rod might help you feel more strikes, but watching the sighter is always a better way to detect strikes. Regarding depth, if you fish larger beads on flies with very few appendages they will sink better. Also, try using thinner tippet to cut through the water better.

Here is a question. I didn't see or here anything on the reel set up which I think Is important. Some people have backing then the fly line and then the Leader and others have just the backing and the leader. Could you explain this mybe in a video.

Thank you Lance Egan i am looking at getting into euro nymphing this upcoming season i am wondering about rods a lot of things ive read say a 2wt might be a little more sensitive and im leaning that way why do you prefer a 3wt and do you know if the comp kit fits on the shadow 2 2wt
@Lanceeganflyfishing5 жыл бұрын
jody power I don’t believe sensitivity is important in a euro rod. You should be reading the sighter to see takes long before they are felt. I think a 3 is the most versatile euro weight, but a 2 or 4 could be great too depending on your circumstances.
@jodypower46065 жыл бұрын
@@Lanceeganflyfishing sensitivity is huge in euro nymphing the whole point is better contact to your flies up to the tip of the rod and down to your hand you can feel takes that dont register on the sighter and you can feel the difference between rocks, sticks and subtle takes one of the deciding factors in rod shootouts is sensitivity thats why a lot of people love the sage esn hd its one of the most sensitive euro rods there is
@Lanceeganflyfishing5 жыл бұрын
jody power I appreciate your opinion. Mine is that sensitivity doesn’t hurt, but truly isn’t necessary in a euro rod. For clarity purposes, you asked my opinion on weights based on the sensitivity of a 2 weight vs. a 3 weight. Don’t confuse softness with sensitivity. A 2 weight is softer (assuming we’re talking about the same family of rods) but softness usually lessens sensitivity. A stiff rod is more sensitive because the rod doesn’t give, or bend as much. When a very soft rod bends it absorbs the “feel” of a take which could be sent down the rod. Opinions are everywhere, but I stand behind mine until experience convinces me otherwise. Respectfully, Lance Egan

I wouldn't recommend a shadow. I'd go cortland for the same price. My friend broke his twice. He got it to experiment and he didn't like it. Don't think of him as a powerhouse hooksetter either. He definitely doesn't horse anything. Cortland comp euro is the way to go in my opinion. Just some food for thought, but if you like echo to each is own

Thank you so much for all your guys work to advance the fly fishing industry. Lance, regarding dropper loops... What do you think of the way Kelly Galloup ties in with a perfection loop, but with weighted flies? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brZgn66gqpe1eYk.html skip the drop shot intro to 11:00.
@Lanceeganflyfishing5 жыл бұрын
Allen Domingo to be candid, I don’t like it. The loop is pulling directly against the tippet and will cause the the tippet to cut itself. Also, the added bulk of the loop and extra knots will slow down the descent of the flies. Lastly, you can easily add a new tag with a uni knot once your surgeons tag is too short to attach another fly. His method may be tolerable (I still wouldn’t do it) for a bounce rig but it wouldn’t be advantageous for euro nymphing.

@skaterhk2134 жыл бұрын
The only reason I see to euro nymph is on a super short drift, the Europeans do it because they can’t use lead or indicators, we can use both in the states, and if you can use something that will put you at an advantage, why wouldn’t you?
@FlyFishFood4 жыл бұрын
skaterhk213 you can get a pretty long drift with a euro rig. Shortest answer though... the water is fastest at the surface. Down deep where the fish actually live it’s a bit slower. An indicator causes your rig to move faster than the current lower in the water column, making you miss many many more fish. Euro allows you to slow down your presentation and adjust for depth very quickly also.
@skaterhk2134 жыл бұрын
Fly Fish Food I think it’s more of a preference thing, if I wanna slow down my presentation I add weight, and where fish trout feed is different on every stream, on spring creek the highest production areas are between 1 to 3 1/2 feet deep, the narrows only 20 miles away I fish a foot or two deeper, there both limestone spring creeks but the fish act differently, I’m more of the Kelly galloup mindset on euro vs indicator, I see advantages to both but prefer indicators and lead
@FlyFishFood4 жыл бұрын
skaterhk213 if that’s your preference, that’s completely fine. But... euro Nymphing isn’t just a “rules” thing. Not sure if you have ever tried it with a legit setup, but for us it has been a game changer.
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing5 жыл бұрын
What a great and detailed presentation. Weighted flies is the way to go. They stay in the strike zone faster and longer. They also have a much more natural presentation. A large percentage of fly fishermen do not realize the strict importance of proper and perfect presentation. The weight below the fly is not as effective as having a nymph with a dropper with a weight above or no weight at all. With the correct size indicator and a proper mend, you don't have to worry about your indicator moving too fast downstream (current speed could possibly make a difference in incredibly fast water). Taking a split shot off a rig much harder than changing a fly? No. Euro nymphing is most likely more effective in shallow water/runs/riffles etc. But, nymphing with a strike indicator in deep or heavy flows blows the Euro rig production out of the water. With the varying currents of a heavier flow, your tippet will not drift the correct speed. It will cause your presentation to become somewhat unnatural in a lot of cases. This is where weighted flies REALLY shine. You are best at being able to adapt to ALL water conditions. Going to a medium to a larger flowing river without indicators and without split shot is a good way to have a long unfruitful day. I have fly fished for steelhead and LRBs (salmon etc) for 25+ years. The euro rig is a great and extremely exciting and creates a great connection for hook setting. But, in deeper water and bigger flows, you are going to have a long day. This obviously also applies to larger trout streams and rivers. There are just some places you are not going to be able to get close enough to properly Euro nymph. Especially with varying currents, it's going to be impossible, 10-12 foot rod or not. You might still be to HIT that water, but your drift will not be anywhere nearly as effective. Those places you can drift anything with an indi rig, even at far distances with a 10-foot rod. Relying on the weight of your flies on presentation is extremely ineffective. This automatically cuts down on your options. Especially when you could just use the same flies for everything. Wind is a problem for most presentations, but it is less for an indicator rig. You can use larger mends to cover for some of this. I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. I am glad you know the thicker fly line/leader/tippet for longer drifts (distance wise). I think most anglers miss that. Also, you can use an albright leader to tippet and even use 2 palomars on your nymph and dropper. It's very simple and incredibly fast. Cold weather with clients (or not) teaches you to be fast and effective. The biggest difficulty with Euro nymphing is distance/depth/flow. You are absolutely correct on presentation being the key. Too many anglers rely on buying expensive flies and thinking that those flies are the key but never get proper drifts. I am surprised you didn't mention (or no one asked) what do you consider a weighted nymph. Every angler is different when tying weighted. Thanks for the presentation! Amazing work.

Into The Wild Fly Fishing Guide Service thank you for your opinions. I don’t follow them completely, especially since you contradict some of your statements throughout the comments. Either way, opinions are just opinions. You have one, I have one and so does everyone else. If you listened to the entire presentation you would have heard me say that the euro setup is not ideal in all situations. There are definitely times and places where an indicator rig is a superior option. My opinion is that the euro rig is more versatile generally speaking. Especially when targeting trout, Grayling or Whitefish which are the target species for this technique. Euro nymphing can certainly be adapted to steelhead situations but won’t likely be the best setup on large or abnormally deep rivers. Happy angling however you decide to fish 🤓.
