An interesting look at Connie flight operations, particularly the intensive maintenance required. Confidence inspiring? Judge for yourself

When I was six (1955) I rode in a Connie from Hawaii to San Diego. The plane was so huge and awe-inspiring! Ten years later my Air Scout group went through a decommissioned Connie in Seattle. I was astonished how cramped and claustrophobic the interior seemed! I was also struck by how many controls were hydraulic (activated by little spigots on the panel) rather than electric. Technology changed fast even back then.

I have flown in DC 6`s but never had the chance to fly in a Connie. What a nice looking ship. That was when flying was a treat. I remember flying United on DC 6 `s they had a great breakfest, that included four Winstons. I guess we will never see that kind of service again.

i was a passenger on an Air Force owned and decked out C-121. An error in most videos to date of the Air Force version is failing to show that the passenger seats are always facing the tail and there are three seats either side of the aisle. The reinforced floor is sleek metal something like an escalator grid at the mall only the "grids or grooves" go north and south not east and west and no carpet is applied. There is a water tank with the white pointed bottom cups. And a small toilet. I love the Connie, I love the Officers who flew us over the Atlantic in the pop up surprise hurricane or wind event three hours out from our destination. story for another day.

Those were the good old days of flying when the food is free, and the service is excellent.

Looks like NDB nav there and the tone is the old A and N radio ranges. It's funny to see how old ILS is and is still in use today

@redravensounds Yes Cindy, I'm glad also that I lived in that era. Life seemed much simpler and calm. I suppose those who were 64 at that time also thought the same way about their early years too. No darn airplanes making so much noise and busy noisy highways. I am glad that I witnessed the steam age of travel also, although it was all but ended then

this plane is kept at Albion Park airport near Wollongong.Sadly all the QANTAS Connies were scrapped..the one we have is a ex US Military Transport Service Plane and a type not flown commercially..it is allowed to use a bit of the QANTAS livery..its interior shows its miltary use but I think they have found a few ex QANTAS seats!!

Those were the real pilots. Navigating manualy. Thats how my dad is teaching me how to fly. I already know how to use the modern way.

I love the Constellation landing showed on The Godfather, when Tom Hagen goes to visit Jack Woltz in California. Love this plane... and perhaps I never going to fly on it = (

1950's to 1980's is the GOLDEN AGE of flying, i remember when i was a kid, people dress properly when they're ready to onboard the plane, the food is just incredibly delicious and awesome, attendant with a nice attitude. Nowadays ? airlines just throw their shit at us and treated us like a cattle.

@kngkrl22 Yeah you're right. It always seems better looking back, but troubles were the same then as now. It's just that when you are young things look a lot different.

Yes... and the pilots still use the same old radio communication while the passengers have satellite phones on every seat :-)

Funny how everything was manualy operated, the margins for errors were too great for my taste. But hey, it was old days.
