If you do use trim you need to make sure you bring the power back and be ready to put down pressure so that it doesn’t climb on the roll out.

Or use an Expo marker and place a small reference point on the windshield to mark level flight attitude. Look through it using monocular vision so that you see two dots. In the turn keep the lower dot on the horizon. My school is pretty dogmatic about it but it works as long as you keep your head and posture correct.

I just did my L-39 checkout and I can confirm that steep turns were the first maneuver we did on every training flight, and were required on the checkride.

I’m still working on PPL. And this is very close to what my instructor does. We trim a bit with the added power in our Cessna just to help with the amount of pull needed in the turn but when I do roll level it does require more pressure not to climb and then releasing pressure correctly to not mess up altitude. I’ve been in different Cessnas and it’s always a little bit of a learning curve with each and their controls/trim needs. Great video and I’m going to try the Ground school app it looks very well put together thanks!

I could never do steep turns well until I did a flight review with an instructor who taught me to pick a bug on the windshield in front of me and keep it on the horizon. Same thing.

I love it. You can bring a dry erase marker and make your own "bug" if you don't leave it on there too long.

A subscriber of the Ground School app here! Love it. Looking forward to the videos. I like how sloooowly you did the steep turns. My problem has always been that I roll into the turn too quickly and then yank the yoke back and generally do everything too quickly... Still havent nailed my steep turns yet and my checkride is coming up in 4 weeks.

I fly in the mountains. Horizon is all over the place, so your system doesn’t work, but I’ve gotten pretty good with just feel.

This was a fun game of Find-the-Location for me. You were circling right by the Middle River Bridge, where the Trapper Slough and Victoria/North Canal intersect the Middle River... and I'm in Michigan... still missing CA like crazy. Gotta love Google Maps!

Superb video! Looks like you have nailed the position of the camera now! I agree that trimming in a steep turn is a bad idea. Turning is a transient maneuver and as such should not be trimmed. Trimming might make the turn easier but the exit harder.

I agree trim doesn't come into it. Steep turns would generally be a transient manoeuvre if a sudden and possibly unexpected change of direction were required, for example avoiding another aircraft. You wont be thinking about trimming it.

I discovered the closing one eye trick at some point too. Do you keep it closed throughout the turn, or just on and off?

Hey Jason, great video. Just a question, I noticed that your airspeed on the initial turn started at 90 knots and when you began to bank to the second turn it was at around 105-110 knots. Is there anything you would add on to or mention about airspeed control? I guess, when it comes to initially teaching a student steep turns, do you focus first on nailing altitude and bank control and then moving to airspeed control? Thanks!

Thank you and thanks for the feedback. In general, yes I do but I’m going to watch the video again to see the mistake you pointed out and maybe I’ll be able to elaborate on what’s happening there. It’s funny I didn’t catch that 😳 but the primary purpose of this video is to show people exactly where to look outside the airplane and what it looks like when the site picture is changing

I find that trim is overused to compensate for not enough power in many airplanes. I was never taught to use power as a student and that made things unnecessarily difficult until I figured the power thing out.

What is it with the EXPO dry erase marker in the intro at 00:19? I see the window mark at 00:23. Can't find the reference for it.

AeroRamer it’s a tool I use to mark the window to help the pilots see sight pictures more effectively and get “outside of the cockpit“. I use it in all sorts of lessons including initial climb / level / descent but often - anytime you want to see out of the airplane more effectively against background references

I had an instructor who got sick every time we (or anyone else) did a steep turn. You knew what you were going to do when the paper bag came out. Why only apple ap?

@@TheFinerPoints He was a good instructor, a good pilot and a nice guy. It was all psychological. He could and did fly them but got sick every time. Everything else no problem. It is a pity it is not android. I cannot buy an apple for this.

What is rudder doing during this turn and during roll out. Is rudder neutral during roll out? I know once going back into power put some rt rubber in there.

MasterCarguy44 Anytime you deflect the ailerons to roll either into or out of a turn you will use rudder in the direction you are rolling. The amount of Rudder required depends on the amount aileron used (the speed at which you rolll)

In a steep turn the rudder is starting to act in the vertical plane and would therefore push the nose down. Conversely the pitch attitude is starting to act horizontally. The two axes are therefore exchanging responsibility. I fly microlights (which I think are light sports in US) and we are examined on a 60 deg banked turn. I still get a little unsure how to modulate the relative inputs of these controls to obtain a good turn. Any suggestions?

Michael Z it is “flight gear”, I discovered it when I switched to Linux from windows. It’s a free simulator, been around since the mid 90s.

Michael Z it’s also about the flight characteristics of the airplane being modeled in the simulator. I have taught myself how to fly a helicopter in the simulator, but that doesn’t mean it would go flawlessly in real life.
