As a high school kid 79-80, I worked as a Ramper for Catalina Airlines on the Island side. We had a number Goose(s) and various helicopters. Will never forget the sounds and smells of those planes. There's nothing like the sound of a radial engine. Wonderful to see such a well maintained model.

Apart from a few bits of worn paint around the rudder pedals, I cant spot a single thing on that aircraft that isn’t absolutely immaculate. I didn’t know it was possible to keep a plane in that perfect a condition. What a joy to behold. Stunning, truly stunning.

Besides the obvious compliments to the pilot and the maintenance team, what impressed me the most is how intense it looked the landing on water. You could feel every small wave and the drag of the water under the hull.

I live in Lake Macquarie, an area on the eastern seaboard of Australia about an hour north of Sydney. We have an airbase (Rathmines) that was built during WWII for seaplanes - namely the Catalina. These were flown in and out of here for most of the war in defense of Australia and in support of troups in places such as New Guinea. Each year they hold a festival in honour of the planes and pilots. It's fantastic event which draws a large crowd. Unfortunately most of the Catalinas that we have left are not flown much due to age. So we don't get to see them as often as we used to. These are my all time favourite plane.

A lot of times I will let a video on KZfaq just run in the background while I do something else or I will skill around a video that I feel is dull or long winded or poorly edited. This was something different though, something truly worth watching from beginning to end without distractions. People talk about the toys they would buy if they won the lottery and this jus showed me that this would be much higher on my list than any Ferrari or other super car. What a life it would be to run charters with this somewhere in the South Pacific.... what a wonderful dream...

I remember watching these planes fly in from the USVI to San Juan, PR and we used to park right next to the ramp….. hearing the roar of the engines as it taxied from the sea to the land was incredible. Beautiful aircraft, and so beautifully restored!! Thanks for taking us along I won a flight on one, as a kid in the late 60's, in Anchorage, AK. I was owned and operated by the Park Service, and they took a handful of us kids who'd won a ride, over to Kenai to some sort of wildlife area and back. The air was rough and I was blowing chow (in a bag). I still have photos of the plane, in black and white, taken on an old "brownie" camera.

I’m only 4 mins in and I just had to comment. I love the way these mechanical controls work. You actually feel everything as opposed to electronics. I’ve never flown by wire so I can’t really say much to the tactile sensory perception of it but there’s something central about feeling exactly what’s at the end of the blade. Excited to watch the rest

I remember working for Manitoba Hydro in the early seventies and one day we we got picked up at a remote location by one of these planes. It was old even then and I looked at it listing on one wing pontoon and thought "is this thing safe"? It was dirty, smelly, and noisy but got us to our destination. I remember noticing that the speedometer showed 220 mph or knots as we were descending - that impressed me. The good old days.

Same paint, Robert “Swage” Richardson, if it is his he let me fly that around but mostly his 1942 Howard DGA-15 in the mid later 70s when I was a kid! I worked at University Swaging Ballard! VERY Expensive hobby!....and Dangerous......I worked at a private Jet Center...I've seen the bills....and I've seen them Crash at our airport many times!!!....... People don't understand the strict Maintenance that has to be done, even if you're not flying it. Many of these WW2 aircraft are not safe and were designed for short missions, so short maintenance cycles, they were designed to Run hard and Fast, so maintenance is critical. Some aircraft were safe and more reliable than others too. But it's a fun hobby if you can afford it, or are Connected to the right people. Awesome video.

As an ex-Coast Guard aviator, the Albatross was being retired as I was in training. They had the Goose prior to that era as well. Gotta say I was stunned to see the sponsons retract!!! All these years and I never knew that was possible. Is that an after market mod, or did I miss something? I knew that Catalina had them, but as far as I knew the Goose, Widgeon, and Albatross did not. Magnificent bird.
