Flying around in and above the clouds is super FUN. Back in the day, my instructor's students would cancel their classes for the day. Frank would call me and we would go play. This was in and around Raleigh. Great landing lady.... You landed soft and smooth. In other words you greased it. Having Pops with you helps... Less work for you. Less in this case, is more! Have FUN and stay out of clouds that have rocks in them....

Cool video, thanks for sharing! For almost a decade, my commute to and from work went over what we call "the highrise," that tall bridge on I-10 that goes over the industrial canal right by the airport. I always loved when the timing was right and a plane would fly right over my head on their final approach!

interestingly enough, I never had any issues trusting my instruments. My flight instructor really solidified in my mind just how easily our senses deceive us, and that stuck so firmly, that I've never had an issue disregarding my errant senses. I love that you are flying a 1968 aircraft. I've told many of my friends who are interested in flying that older planes can be purchased for good prices, and they are fun and reliable due to requirements for getting an airworthiness certificate for them. Great call staying IFR too. You really hit some soup there. Fly safe and keep the blue side up!

Your video's and airplane remind me of a time when I flew nearly every week day for 3 weeks with a guy that owned a Cherokee 160. He was VFR rated but was training for his IFR cert. Thank goodness he had learned enough because we came into Chesapeake, VA in pea soup fog and had to rely on the ATC to guide us in. It was three weeks of that I really enjoyed. You have a beautiful airplane and I really enjoy your videos.

Get up with your instructor and maneuver in IMC and shoot some approaches busting out at around 800’ to 1000’ AGL. You’ll be glad you did. And remember…don’t go out in a skyhawk or Cherokee, be smart and go out saving babies from a burning building 😆 or something similar. Don’t take silly chances in single engine piston.

@@thelastrebelshow1627 I thought you were an instrument student. My point was I would get some actual cloud time but not in low IMC in a single engine piston. Not worth it unless it’s your job.

Ya know, I did all the stuff you’re showing, back in the 80’s when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. I was very competent at it. But looking back, if I’d really been competent I would have said to myself “Self, don’t do this.” In the 900 hours I logged before I was 32 years old, in my 1983 B36 TC Bonanza I brought home from Wichita (yeah I was a rich kid) I had only one engine failure. All the oil blew out through a failed prop shaft gasket. Had that failure occurred the night before on an IFR flight through rain with zero visibility from Ontario to Oxnard Ca until I broke out a minimums on the ILS, I’d most likely be dead. Back then all of us GA pilots took those kinds of risks. We even took our families along on those flights. But times change. What was considered acceptable risk 35 years ago appears to me to be unacceptable now. I hope you keep this in mind.

I used to have a 180! It was a great little airplane. I got my instrument rating in it years ago. Now I have a 79 Archer. I'd love to have the avionics you have in my plane. But.... to expensive.. I'll have to stick to my steam gauges and KNS80.

@azcharlie2009
@azcharlie2009 Жыл бұрын
@@chriszeitler4613 Yes, that's the key, isn't it? Coupled approaches. It makes flying IFR so much safer. My Century IIIB has LOC tracking, which helps, but there's nothing like altitude hold and, GS following on decent. I'd love to have the GFC500 she has... On the Aera 660, I use a program called Avare on my android tablet. It's free and loaded with features. It's a phenomenal program.... Unfortunately neither is legal for primary IFR, so GPS approaches are not available. I think the FAA should reconsider those for use under IFR conditions. All they'd have to do is raise the MDA a bit I think, with some autopilots, you can couple to them with bluetooth. That would certainly help those of us that can't afford to spend twice what the airplane is worth to upgrade.
@chriszeitler4613

@@azcharlie2009 I have the IIIB AP also. Hoping to start my IFR training this spring. I use Foreflight with iPad along with the Aera. Good for VFR but I sure would like an autopilot coupled to GPS.

@Quillons1
@Quillons1 Жыл бұрын
So what you're saying is you could've gone visual and opened up the approach for that stack of planes you said was waiting to get in but you decided to continue in to "log" the approach and keep those other pilots holding in IMC while they wait for you to shoot an approach in VMC in your Cherokee at 90 knots? Cool. Got it. You know that once you fly any portion of the approach in IMC you can log it, right? Even if you go visual at some point.
