You can always tell who the PHX boys are when they start to say V16 rather than V15 😊 The short flights remind me of doing PHX/TUS turns, which were also just over 20 minutes. Even more challenging with a new F/O 😅

You did those island-hopping turns, and you are right to get to the hotel crash! I hope you got a lot of rest on this trip there and I agree with you also about flying into Hawaii, that it is beautiful. And the walks over to Waikiki Beach continue to be gorgeous as well. For me, of the Hawaiian trips from my former airline, I have only done the one stop inland hopping on flights from Kona to Maui then home to Chicago with the 777s.

I think you should consider going back to the iPhone camera for the majority of the video. The new camera seems like an excellent choice as a flex when shooting plane exteriors or other cool subjects but IMO the iPhone's ability to wrangle nearly anything into something decent (and the audience's universal acceptance of that look, particularly in vlogs) was by and large giving you better results and you're now running into noticeable issues with focus and lighting that weren't issues with the iPhone. Also regardless of camera 30+fps would probably yield benefits as well. You used to use 60 a lot and it looked great.

Today, (9-4-'23) Imua One was flying between Indianapolis and Tampa. Pretty much any 737 that gets flown to Hawaii would be ETOPS certified. Southwest is flying that plane throughout it's routes to remind the rest of the country that they can get them to Hawaii.

Capt Ern, just curious because I know very little about flying, but why the 3 minute warm up on the engines on such short turnarounds?
@jameswinward435411 ай бұрын
Requirement on the Max 8 the engines are different then on a typical 737
@hewhohasnoidentity437711 ай бұрын
Different model engines have different warm up and cool down requirements. This is a concern on all combustion engines to keep the oil properly circulating. Technology advancements have brought the required times short enough to be a non issue in most circumstances. In this case with the runway so close the flight crew has to be aware of the run time. It used to be normal to idle cars and large trucks before driving anywhere. Now driving slowly from your driveway to the highway is enough.

Thank you, Captain Ern! Great to see a man of my own culture doing awesome things. Are there more frequent cycles on the aircraft used for the Inter-Island flights or are they swapped regularly?
@hewhohasnoidentity437711 ай бұрын
My uneducated guess is that only a small portion of the fleet is going to be equipped for ETOPS flights. There is no point in putting the extra life rafts and additional redundancies in every aircraft in the fleet. All of the aircraft operating between the islands got there by flying from the mainland, so they are all ETOPS qualified. It would make sense to rotate aircraft between doing inter Island hops and doing the crossing to the mainland. They would also bring them in for maintenance and other needs. Because of the cycle intensity of island hopping it would make sense to rotate aircraft out of the ETOPS fleet and put them in the mainland fleet and bring other aircraft to do some ETOPS flying. The point is to meet all of the needs of the airline for as long as possible with each aircraft. For the foreseeable future Southwest is trying to build a loyal customer base for the Hawaii routes and establish themselves as better than Hawaiian Airlines. This means you can expect the newest aircraft to be on these routes for a while. I live in Vegas, which is known as the 9th island. Tourists for years have been begging for any airline to compete with Hawaiian Airlines.
