As a fellow pilot it puts a smile on my face to see younger pilots (I`m 53) in hi tech aircraft with Ipad assistance still using pen and paper for either atc instructions or flight monitoring etc. Love the vids Richard.

@@richardtyrerI absolutely agree with this, even as a non-pilot, as over the years I’ve watched the growth of tech in even GA aircraft and I keep thinking how worrying it is - there seems to be an over-reliance on tech and it indirectly impacts on flight safety, where I believe that there is no substitute for the basics of flying skills - my main worry is hackers

Many thanks for this first leg of your flight back home. I can't wait for the second leg. That was kind of stressful this weather and possible fog over the destination which turn out to be kind of disappointing with this blue sky. But I guess it's way better like this. Hi Richard, great video as usual! I flew the DA42 for the first time this summer to get the MEL rating, but ran out of time before I could finish. Impressed with the plane but as I hadn't used the G1000 before that turned out to be a bit of a stumbling block. Also getting used to tapes instead of steam gauges. I rely on the VSI a lot and it's just tiny on the G1000! But loved the FADEC as it greatly simplifies engine control, especially for single-engine ops! Also used the full-cockpit DA42 sim quite a bit and that was really impressive. Hopefully will finish up the MEL rating next summer! Take care and fly safe!

Great to hear! It is a great aircraft to get your multi on! The G1000 is a very good system once you learn the logic around it. I basically locked myself in a sim for a day and just pressed every button and explored every menu. Best of luck with the rating, it opens up so many new opportunities once you get it! 😁👍

Why are you switching on Alternate Air when entering IMC? Is this a requirement according to the POH of N42LR? In the DA-42 I am flying Alternate Air is only supposed to be opened in icing conditions. Great video! Very educational!
@richardtyrer
@richardtyrer 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's an interesting one. The POH does state "operation in rain, snow or visible moisture" - Alternate Air Open, with no mention of a tempurature limit. I'm sure its main reason is based on icing conditions but the factory training reinforced it for all IMC. Whether there was a concern about getting the air filter saturated with mositure I don't know (just taking a guess!). If you want the reference its POH 4A.6.18 (Page 4-64) of the DA42 NG AFM. Hope that helps! Great to see you enjoyed the video! 😁👍

Very nice videos Richard and I enjoy the soundtracks you have selected. I was considering a DA62 until I discovered they will not fit into the 48 foot hangars we have here so now I am looking at a DA42. In your opinion, how would you say the shoulder room is in the DA42 with two people in the front seats. Is there more width then a C172?
@richardtyrer
@richardtyrer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! With two tall guys in the front of a DA42 I have never had any shoulder room issues. The only advantages I can really see about the DA62 cockpit is more headroom and the arm rest. But at 6'2" I find the DA42 more than comfortable! I can't remember a C172 cockpit so unfortunately I can't compare!
@FL-FLyer
@FL-FLyer 3 жыл бұрын

Just flew the DA42 for the first time this summer. Though it's been many years since I've flown a 172, I recall sometimes it was elbow-to-elbow with an instructor, though not as bad as the 152! The DA42 does seem quite a bit more roomy and comfortable than a 172 (I'm 6'2" and 195 pounds). In particular, I used to get a backache in the 172 but the slightly reclined DA42 seats seem much more comfortable. You do have to get used to getting in to the DA42, though. Bit like getting into a fighter. No side doors like the 172 so it's not like getting into a car.

Hey Richard - how do you find working with O2 in the UK? Do you get it refilled at Wycombe or do have your own rig?
@richardtyrer
@richardtyrer 2 жыл бұрын
I don't find it an issue at all! The O2 tank in the DA42 lasts for 60 hours with the OxySaver masks, so I rarely need to top it up. A lot of the flying I do I don't need to use it, but it is a handy option to have there. I get it refilled at Gamston when I go for maintenance, but if I get low at Wycombe I'm sure they will let me refill there.

May i ask if you own the aircraft? I´ve had my fair share of SE flying, but not many MEP aircraft out there for rental. Flying the airplane looks great! Norway has lots of small airports from ENVA nothbound to ENKR. Lofoten for instance (east of ENBO) has multiple small airports with around 800-1000m runways with AFIS. Great place to fly then the high-pressures are dominating.
@richardtyrer

Yes it is my aircraft! Renting an MEP seems to be more difficult around Europe as they are all used by commercial pilot schools. But if you get the chance to get a rating it may open a few doors?
