Flying Lotus' third album is by far his most diverse, loaded with elements of jazz, hip hop, and countless hybrids of electronic music. It's dense, boundless, engaging, and fun. Though it's not all that cohesive, what's created here is good enough to maintain attention and screw with your head.

Flying Lotus was SO GOOD when I saw his 1st show (only knew some of his songs, and that he would later have his on DJ-Show on GTA V... FlyLo FM). I decided to check out his show in Boston. The show was SO PSYCHADELIC that it had me in a trance... and I decided to SKIP the last bus home, just so I could watch the rest of the show and meet him after (he said he would be signing autographs and talking after). I left the club at 1am.. met him and Thundercat. Then... strolled thru Boston ALL NIGHT alone, on a chilly May night. Seeing nothing but lights and hearing nothing but street sounds (sfx which I heard in his song "Me Yesterday//Chorded"). Also seeing homeless people sleeping in the streets. Once I finally got home when Morning came and trains were running, I purchased Los Angeles from Newbury Comics... I couldn't believe how much I loved it. SO... I went on Best Buy's website and purchased ALL 3 of his other albums I didn't own yet (1983 / Cosmogramma / Until the Quiet Comes). I would eventually see him DJ for Rockstar Games later that year when GTA V was released... Shawn Fonteno and Rod Edge (voice actor of Franklin and Cutscene Director of GTA V) told me to go to the (sold out) Afterparty and theyll get me in. I GOT IN :) and met him again and told him I saw him in Boston, and I said "This is kind of embarrassing I guess, but your album Until the Quiet Comes made me cry once it was finally over"... he laughed and said "Why would you be embarrassed of that?" (MADE MY DAY hearing that)... and I got a drunk selfie with him (it was OPEN BAR that night and i had no sleep but very buzzed/excited). THEN.... a year later, I saw him at the same club in Boston for "You're Dead!" I held out "1983" and a Sharpie while he was on stage... he actually grabbed it, signed it, and handed it back. It was AMAZING. I like Flying Lotus so much that I refused to listen to "You're Dead!" until I went to his show for the album first (to hear it fresh for the 1st time at his trippy show)... the following day I bought You're Dead! :)

@aw5omeFRAZA I don't understand where the "facts" are wrong. I never said the vinyl crackle was an accident. Didn't think that needed to be made clear. If it wasn't meant to be there, why would it be so prevalent? There are plenty of producers who sample from vinyl, but use noise reducing software to nix some of the crackles. Don't understand where you misunderstood me, really.

Like your long reviews dude! Especially the ones where there's 50:50 observations and opinions. I've said it before, the lengthy reviews are where you excel, in my opinion. I've yet to give this thing a proper listen, and I can't give my 2cents worth yet, but I'm really diving into more unfocused music at the moment and I'm hoping this will be good.

I like this old review, it’s very meager and stripped down. You can tell the reviewer is experimenting with different ideas and formats, I give it a strong 8 to a light 9. Seriously tho, the best thing about his old videos is the comment section. There’s an actual attempt to talk about music. Not just the cliched hyperbolic attack on fantano or people saying “last time I was this early...” I can’t stand the blatant cries for likes in his current comment section.

Do you do reviews where you re-listen to an album from today's perspective? I know that seems unnecessary in most cases, but with your point then that this album is where music would have headed in the future, I think it would be cool for you to revisit and dissect your past impressions with where today's soundscape has moved toward. A thought, an idea, a thing i have thought while I am 12 years in the past on the internet

Very solid review! personally i think that Flying Lotus is one of the most signature producers out there and no one can compare or do what he does. Almost like a futuristic J Dilla not to start any arguments because allot of people don't like him being compared to the great Dilla but i just like to point out that his hip hop aspect in music has that laggy drum style mixed with electronic sounds and samples.

@cores163 one thing though: what i like when i read/watch reviews are hints that encourage me listening to it more often or would even change my perception of the music, because of things you wouldn't notice yourself at the first view listens. in the sense of this p4k quote: "it sounds almost frustratingly unstable until you hear it a few times and the pieces begin to interlock and congeal." i fuckin love this album. Flylo had already cemented himself as one of my favorite artist with L.A., but Cosmogramma is great aswell.

Have you heard Growing's new album yet? I miss their ambient/drone work, but from what I've listened to, it isn't bad... Well... at least in MY opinion...

love flying lotus and this album is the total shizz to me, liked the food references you gave in relation to the differences to la and this one. i also feel abit of squarepusher and vangelis's blade runner soundtrack influence on a few tracks. great review man.
