Steven Ellison, our favorite sculptor of hazy, spacy laptop beats, is no stranger to the comforting bleeps and bloops of the Nintendo generation. He name-checks Mortal Kombat 2 as an influence and credits the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim with giving him his first big break. Here, 'FlyLo' shows off his fluid style as he switches with ease between discussing musical legends in the family (great-aunt Alice Coltrane, cousin Ravi Coltrane) and kicking ass on Street Fighter and Galaxian.

I was falling asleep to Adult Swim every night throughout my childhood. Not even realizing that I was listening to his beats. Now it's like embedded within me. I fucking love FLyLo.

i was about 14 when i first saw this, and thats freaking awesome that there are really young people that enjoy good stuff like Flylo. But yeah, i always used to watch the Boondocks, and there would always be a bump that played the massage situation song. A baggage room if i recall. that was in late 2006. It wasnt until about late 2008 that i figured out who this guy was, and im sure glad i did.

My respect for this guy is through the roof, his music was already meaningful to me...but then adding at the end of this video that "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" is one of his fav shows...definitely made even that much more awesome.

oh also, the fact that hes from my same generation "the Nintendo generation" makes me even a bigger fan, especially since so many of his songs sound like video games (Friday Night Funk, and 1983 for example).

Isnt that insane.. he would never have become famous, we would never be so enthralled with his amazing creations if it wernt for his mothers optimistic approach in such a little decision like that. Insane, love this guy.

@KillSeattleLewis I suppose because FlyLo and Dilla are probably the two best known "leftfield hip-hop" producers out there, alongside maybe Madlib. Dilla was a big influence on FlyLo as well.
