I’m not afraid of the plane as much, I think my fear comes from being in a situation that I have zero control over. We are strapped into a seat, the door slams shut, the pilots locked away in their own world, the engine starts, I didn’t turn the key what’s going on here? THat kind of thing.

My tip: fake it till you make it. I am absolutely terrified of flying, but as soon as I'm at the airport, I pretend to be a frequent flier. So I go buy a newspaper, when my flight is delayed I visibly roll my eyes, etc. It might sound stupid but it somehow really helps me not to have a full blown panic attack. By pretending to be okay I'm kind of lying to myself but that really calms me down, subconsciously. Try it next time :)
@LoxagosSnake

Not stupid at all. I become an anxious mess moments before I reach the airport...but as soon as I go through the door, I'm someone else. I've even successfully helped someone calm down by sharing my fear and explaining the physics of flight to them.

The moral of the story is....if your afraid of flying, there is an underlying fear that has nothing to do with flying. Whenever you fly, it triggers that emotions of uncertainty, a fear of not being in control, claustrophobia, (which is an arm of not being in control). There is a reason your afraid, but it's an illogical. You need to re-evaluate the experience that CAUSED you to become afraid. Once you have calmed your anxiety through relaxation techniques, you are ready to uncover the source of trouble, anxiety, uncertainty, trammua, ect and look that belief with reason and some perspective. Gently, consider those emotions, reactions in that situation, get counsel and support on how you could regain some perspective on those reactions, then you'll be able to cop better with fly, and many other things that you held yourself back from before.

vicky mcfadden How is a feeling of not being in control, uncertainty and claustrophobia when you get in a plane nothing to do with flying in a plane? It is directly caused by flying itself. It's the same as a fear of heights is more a fear of falling, yet that fear of falling is directly caused by the height at which you could fall.

when I pictured myself on a plane that had its own cabins where I could retreat to and spend my time in there I knew I'd be nervous but still a hell of a lot calmer than I'd usually be. So what does that tell you, its more a social anxiety than anything.

Got over my fear of flying thanks to a nice FA. She asked what I was scared of, and I said it was the turbulence. She explained to me what turbulence was (collision of warm and cold air) and then told me the planes wings were built to bend totally vertical before even snapping. Made me feel a lot better and now I don't mind flying even with heavy turbulence!

figure it like this, 99% of the time your flight is going to be fine, and on the off shot something happens, 99% of those times it will be minor, in the 1% of times its major probably 75% of the time it will result in at least a relatively safe conclusion, and than for the 25% remaining, you either crash and die ( in which case you are dead [probably very swiftly] and you wont care because you are dead) or you will survive, in which case you may as well keep flying because the odds you will be in a second major disaster are unfathomable, but if you find yourself in a major disaster for a second time, you will either crash and die ( in which case you are dead [probably very swiftly] and you wont care because you are dead) or you will survive, in which case you may as well keep flying because the odds you will be in a third major disaster are possibly impossible to define and if you find your self in a third major disaster you either crash and die ( in which case you are dead [probably very swiftly] and you wont care because you are dead) or you will survive, and it will be apparent to you by now that you are an immortal (at least when it comes to crashing into the ground) and you may as well keep flying.

Same, calling major bullshit on this. Even though it's statistically negligible to be involved in a crash, fear of flying (in contrast to something like fear of monsters) isn't irrational per se -- the plane *can* actually crash with fatal results. Your mind knows this and it makes the logical connection; it just chooses to focus on that instead of the favorable statistics. A 'one simple trick' won't cut it. It would take a lot of conventional sessions combined with exposure therapy to cure. I have a mild fear of flying (not panic attacks, I'm just extremely uncomfortable) and the more I internalize the probabilities and the more I fly and see first-hand how safe it is, the lesser it becomes.
@toxendon

@@LoxagosSnake I mean it makes sense to talk about the unconscious fears and memories that might have triggered a fear of flying, but yeah one session with tapping your head etc and no talk about the mechanisms of the plane, statistics etc... it seems a bit weird. The first time I flew I was about 6 years old (late 60s). It was fun. The second time, about 2 years later I was plucked from the boarding line and invited to the cockpit (727). There I was allowed to sit in the captain's seat to flick switches and move the controls. Pushed the throttles forward to a loud buzz. Man I tell you what, that day spurred a lifelong love of aircraft and the exact same feeling of wonder that I had as a kid I still have today. The best part of every trip somewhere is the plane ride there and back, without question.

Nobody knew why it happened and we never got an explanation from American Airlines. Needless to say, my fear is SO bad now that even when I see an airplane on TV I start to get extremely panicky. damn i used to be like that! but by the time i flew often i've got used to it.I would say that i have that anxiety before the departure., and this could be even 1 month before the flight.But what has changed now for me is that when i actually put my feet in the aircraft that fear dissapears and by the time of taking off im actually enjoying it.I used to be afraid even to look outside the window but now i picture and capture things...I think is about how you can play with your mind.And fix that destination in your mind, try to think only about where you're going.Another aspect for me is that i think my daughter helped me to actually enjoy flights.She loves flying and said that she wants to be a pilot one day...

I do not get how people can be afraid of aviation. I especially love that feeling when my stomach jolts. I even had the chance to fly a tiny Cessna 172 last year at my Aviation Camp 2000 feet over a river. The cars were ants. It’s so awesome. Especially looking up and seeing the massive fuselage of a Boeing 747-400 four-engine jumbo jet. Seeing the rudders flap in the wind and the flaps increasing or decreasing. The thrust that lifts off the plane is even better. I just love aviation. Being in the cabin and/or cockpit is fun too. Navigating the avionics/instruments. Seeing the PAPI/VASI lights is cool too as you go down the glideslope. ✈️

I’m terrified of flying but “This to shall pass” gets me through and not just flying but everything bc most of the time, whatever you go always passes in time. ALSO HUGE TIP, if somehow you’re able to pick your feet up off the floor it makes a huge difference. I learned this flying 4 plus from LA to Nashville in the worst nonstop continuous turbulence. I lucked up and somehow managed to get a empty row so when I was feeling at my worst, I laid across all three seats praying to God if I could somehow just get a little sleep to help get through the flight. Needless to say laying there eyes closed, I didn’t get a sec of sleep but I noticed that the turbulence doesn’t feel any where near the same as when your feet are on the floor. It has to have some kind of physics effect or something. I know it might sounds weird but you might want to try it. It’s been a total game changer for me and I’m really interested in finding out if it does work for someone else or am I just in this case a lucky weirdo??? Blessings!

I'm the same, not flown in 3 years due to it, im 35 and flown on and off over the years, the last time I was 5secs from getting off the plane on the runway before doors closed, causing a bit of a scene. Not enjoyment booking a holiday at all, but love being abroad in the sun when I'm there, spend 70% of the time in the toilet stomach in knots prior to getting on that plane, it's horrendous. Not being in control, getting shut in are all things I hate. I'm doomed

I flew to ft myers florida 0ne day the weather was great. the day I was supposed to fly back had bad storms all the way up the east coast to were I live so I took a bus home instead of deal with bad turbulence.

I'm afraid of crashing and the fact that you are going to realise there is not going back. I prefer a car crash and is more likely to survive in a car than in a place crash. I've been abroad once in Rome, I was crying before take off but after landing I felt very proud of myself. I felt I could take another flight instantly without fear. However the day before the flight back I couldn't stop thinking about it. I wasn't crying but I was really scared, and it was a bad flight. I want to travel around the world but I think I will always cry and never enjoy it.

Yes it's a good question. Here is Sarah's own words taken from christopherpauljones.net/testimonials/ “After working with Christopher, my flight on Friday was a success! There were no tears or nervousness at all. It’s still hard to explain and I’m still trying to take it all in. The thought of going to the airport, going through security and waiting around bored me instead of making me feel nervous. When I got on the plane instead of a wave of anxiety, I felt a wave of confidence and excitement. We even had some turbulence towards the end of the flight and it didn’t bother me at all (I even smiled!!). My attitude has completely changed when turbulence happens now. If I think about turbulence I feel very laid back about it all, instead of fearing that it’s going to get worse. After the session I think I still felt a bit confused about my thoughts on flying. I couldn’t decide if I really was feeling these emotions or if I was just making it up. Now I know for sure that I can feel confident getting on a plane and I just can’t explain how happy that makes me.” Sarah Howley - worked with Christopher on BBC Skies Above Britain

Chris Jones, My name is V, a non binary trans amab from Portland Oregon. Three years ago I developed vertigo that lasted two years. On occasion I feel slight symptoms and start to feel anxious and fear it will return. Before this, I had no issues flying. After this I began experiencing panic attacks that would leave me emotional, fatigued and out of sorts. After each flight I would experience vertigo which added more anxiety. The vertigo would last minutes, hours, days, weeks and sometimes months afterwards. Still to this day there are no answers as to why I developed vertigo. I have met a new love who lives on the other side of the world and I want to get to him for a visit. This video inspired me to find out how to get over and heal from both vertigo and the fear of flying. Thank you, -V I wish you were in the states for a session. 😞♥️

@ChrisJones-kt3sf

First is to find the cause of your fear In this case being trapped, which may more may not have started when flying, then you can use various tools to remove the emotions. here is a sort clip from my book Face Your Fear Of Flying, You can probably see that events that are directly linked to fear of flying are much easier to identify when you’re trying to think of the root cause of your fear. But when the link is less direct (like losing a parent when you were a child), it can be harder. In fact, you might even remember the event but think to yourself, “Oh, but it can’t be that. That has nothing to do with flying.” What am I afraid of? The first step to getting clarity is to ask yourself: What is it specifically that I’m afraid of when it comes to flying? Grab a pen and paper and answer that for yourself right now: • What specifically am I afraid of when it comes to flying? What am I focusing on when my fear kicks in? A good way to figure this out is ask When is my fear at its worst? For example: • When the plane is climbing (often connected to a fear of not being in control). • When the plane levels out at cruising altitude, and you can look out of the windows (in which case, you probably have a phobia of heights rather than flying). • The moment the door shuts, and you can’t get out? (in which case, your fear is probably something closer to claustrophobia). • If there is turbulence on the flight (then you may be afraid of the movement, or you’re imagining dropping out of the sky). • What if I panic on the plane? (If so, you have a fear of the fear; a fear of not being in control of your emotions). Later in this book, when we come to the change methods, I use the term “fear of flying”. If you have realised that your issue is really about something else - control, heights, or whatever - you can change the wording in your mind as you read this book.
