I would love to see a tsa friendly Leatherman micra. Maybe swap the knife blade for maybe a package opener or something tsa friendly.

I suggest modding a Micra, replacing the blade with a can opener or house key, (or something of the sort) , so you don’t have pliers, but have a reliable and sturdy pair of scissors.

After almost 10 flights and security checks in all Europe with the Knipex Cobra XS, the Glasgow airport security took it away from me!😤 Although I tried to convince them that no other airports security checks considered it a forbidden item, they just don't let me pass with it! They almost took my Victorinox Classic but give it back when I told them that's complying their rules printed at the entrance in the security zone! I think they just liked my Knipex and took it!

Wouldn't the person complain about that being done? If it passes guidelines, they must let it through. Rules are set to be followed on BOTH sides. I'd bring a lawsuit against them.

I take a small zip pouch with some hex bits, a ratcheting bit adapter, a pair of cheapo folding scissors, a bike tire lever, a small bottle opener and an assortment of string, split rings etc. In my experience UK (and various EU) security will confiscate anything they think is a “tool” (lest we dismantle the plane, presumably…) but they don’t look twice at a loose jumble of things that can be combined to become tools 🙂

I think your comment is spot on. Don't bring anything of value (even sentimental) on your trip. Best to go with an assortment and inexpensive tools. I've had items confiscated by the TSA. They follow their rules, not logic.

Just an FYI, I've attempted to carry a number of different full size multi-tools in my carry-on; Gerber 600 bladeless and a couple of modified Leathermans. All it takes is one TSA agent to unfold the tool in some way that exceeds the 7 inches and it's their's - even though you can't (usually) use the tool in that configuration (lost the Gerber when the agent pulled out a screwdriver, then folded it into pliers mode, then measured). I've lost all 3 after only a few flights each. I usually carry the Leatherman Style PS nowadays, but I'm testing a Schrade bladeless tool on my next set of flights. It is supposed to be TSA approved, but it has a package opener, so we'll see. Good luck!

Here in New Zealand departure wise, knives and scissors under 6cm are ok. It did also say that officers won't open any pocket knives up, so the body needs to be under 9.5cm (to ensure that the blade would most likely be under 6cm). Love the channel, getting some great ideas!!

Great video, Jon, I always enjoy your presentations. This is where the Jetsetter, albeit compromised in some respects, tends to check all of the boxes in terms of most flying regulations and laws (which force those compromises in the first place). I have traveled all about the USA without any problems. Most TSA agents readily recognize the Jetsetter, in fact. It also appears to follow UK restrictions (no surprise there). My UK friends said it should be fine, which is good since I will be starting back over there for business and professional travel soon. By the way, I have always used the tweezers in a secondary way as a tiny flat blade screwdriver. Obviously it is not good for prying anything, but it is great for small screw sets.

Hey there just found the channel and love the videos! Have you heard of keybar ?They make pretty solid key organizers but offer a lot of different options for adding tools along with your keys. I'm sure you could put together a mutlitool with everything you'd want plus theres tons of third party options out there. I travel with a rough rider dog groomer's tool and a Big idea design Titanium Pocket Tool wit the blade removed and then when I land I just pick up a utility blade ASAP

Thanks for feedback Ben 🙏 I've just checked out the dog groomers tool - interesting option, particularly if you have hair! Good option re Keybar, I like the idea of creating your own mix - and if one doesn't appeal to security you could just remove that one - I will explore what is available. Love all Big Idea Design stuff, not cheap but really well thought out. Good plan to purchase utility blade on arrival if travelling for a while. Some great suggestions Ben - thank you.

Looking through some airlines guides they exclude any form of screw driver, scissors, wrench, pliers or nail file and carry on limited to as low as 5kg. For long trips, where you might need both warm weather and chilly night time clothes packing everything in one bag makes it heavy. I went for two convertible back packs. A smaller everyday carry to go with me with the batteries and tech gear and a 35 litre to go cargo for the clothes and pocket tools.
@JonGadget

Like knife laws for different territories these rules vary too. I agree if you need clothes for warmth it is very hard to fly with just hand luggage - unless you wear it all to fly!

Hi Jon just found your channel and subscribed. Before travel restrictions I travelled sometimes carry on. At one point even scissors weren't allowed. My go to tool is a Niteize cap lifter, prybar, screwdriver and blunt box opener. Anything else I bought on location. I added blunt tipped scissors in my toiletry bag when it became legal. Quite confusing as the rules aren't consistent and changes over time. Thanks for trying anyway.

Hi, thanks for your support 👍 My go to pry bar is a Boker version which is pointy so I doubt it would be allowed. Different countries have different rules so really confusing when you factor that in.

Always research the country you are travelling through and the airline you are travelling on, rules can vary and rules can change . In New Zealand as long at the blade is under 6cm it can travel, the problem is a change to the rules that states the overall length can be no longer than 9.5 cm, so even if the blade is compliant, if the overall length is over 9.5 cm, this change has upset many traveler’s who’s multi-tool could previously travel.
@AGDaws
@AGDaws Жыл бұрын
I just checked the restrictions in Australia. Scissors with blunt or round ends and blades less than 6cm are okay, but pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers are all prohibited. So that rules out most multi tools in Australia - or any multi tool that actually has useful tools!
@TheStoyanbahchevanov

You've got me thinking now, for modifying a tool(90mm victorinox) for such a purpose. You are correct for the scissors, but you should double check for the country you travel to. I will think about that, and try to convert victorinox. Cheers
@JonGadget
@JonGadget 3 жыл бұрын
There may be some Country exceptions for all rules and in the end the decision of the person checking always stands even if they are not following their own rules. Victorinox are harder to modify. Would be interested to know how you get on.

Hi Jon! Personally, I travel in Europe and UK with my 58 mm Rambler, as from European Commission regulation 1998/2015, which allows knife blades and scissors (from fulcrum) shorter than 6 cm. Dealing with intercontinental flights, why not considering the Victorinox Swisscard Nailcare? Or other Swisscards and possibly leaving at home the knife when in doubt? Congrats for the channel. Ciao! 😉

The Leatherman Style PS was such a great tool for traveling. My scissors broke (spring broke) but when I sent it into Leatherman to be repaired or replaced, they gave me a Squirt PS4 instead since the Style has been discontinued. It’s a year later and I’m curious to know how much travel you have done with you modified Leatherman? Was it allowed through?

I almost had my Victorinox champ confiscated prior to boarding Eurostar at Brussels. It was in my main suitcase (we flew out, but returned by train), but showed up on the x-ray. I've had two Style PS tools, and on both the scissor spring broke very quickly. The first one, some security agent at SYD wouldn't let me have it, saying it had a knife. I said that's a file, he looked confused for a second and repeated I can't have it. I wasn't going to argue about $20 and left to catch my plane. But yeah, would never recommend the Style PS even if it was legal to fly with in the UK >_> Thanks for sharing!

The issue is that the CAA rules make pliers forbidden regardless of size as the rules were lazily written. Have had this discussion many times, but the jobsworths just hide behind the CAA guidance. Maybe it could be amended with a size restriction like there is for scissors.

I'm flying soon. Personally I don't carry a large multitool in my normal edc because of the weight. In terms of multitools/knives I'm usually carrying a victorinox classic SD, a night ize doohickey+, and some sort of small locking blade like a kershaw shuffle. My plan for my upcoming trip is to take a swisscard with the knife left at home and my doohickey plus. It won't fully make up for not having a knife but it'll at least give me the scissors and I'll have the serrated edge on the doohikey+. I'm a little nervous about the doohickey+ though. Maybe I should take my classic doohickey? Issue there is I'd be losing the Phillips driver. I'm hoping that combination will get the job done without being confiscated.

American laws. You can’t carry any knife. But you can carry multi tools with 4 inch scissors. Once on the plane you can use the screwdriver or another to undo the scissors, and voilà, now you have two 4 inches knives. Genius legislators at work.
