had a dream about this the other night, went here loads when I was a child but forgot about it. for some reason, I thought I had imagined it! lovely to see that it was real and that there is documentation of it :)

I think this may have been the first Mcdonalds I went to. I was a bit surprised when I found out they weren't all shaped like flying saucers!

I was stationed at RAF Alconbury the very year this video was made. My family and I got to England just a couple of weeks prior, in fact. We ate there and thought it was really neat to have a "bit of home" in such an odd setting. Incredibly sad that it has been taken down.

Remember going in there when it was McDonalds - Then a few years later driving by and seeing it abandoned and inaccessible from the main road. Good memories, thanks

Damn I miss that place. I remember it being built as "Megatron" such an awesome place. They had those plasma balls that follow your fingers it the ends of the tables, a robot in the roof space that looked a bit like a cylon, a load of tv screens linked together to make a big screen ( I remember watching the first teenage mutant ninja turtles movie in there). And they had a arcade machine area. Damn I miss those days.

Didn't they have a robot statue outside? I was around 8 when I went there. I'm sure they had a computer screen back then to order food. can anyone else confirm this as I remember an 8 bit style interface with a list of food and me and my sister pressing loads of buttons

John Myers when it ŵas megaton yes you are correct. Robot suited person outside. Strobe waking in and screens you ordered on which continually broke.

When I was a kid living on RAF Alconbury in the early 2000s I vividly remember begging my mom to take me to this McDonalds and when she told me it was abandoned I just assumed she was lying so she wouldn't have to take me. Weird memories.

This was once the Megatron spaceship restaurant. I was the robot character that did walkabouts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons for various Birthday parties. Thank for the memory before McDonalds took over. The Original owner was an estate agent who went bust owing many people money. I was out of pocket but not as bad as some. I went there as a kid in the late 80's/early 90's with my Grandparents a few times. You must have shaken my hand a few times 😂. Think I have a photo somewhere. Did Megatron close because of the Closure of the Airbase?

I never ever went to Cambridgeshire as a child, however my wife grew up in Alconbury and was one of the things she remembers most about her childhood.

I am still very active with my robotic activities and can be seen around the country performing for corporate events. I have many characters and some have clips on you tube. The National Space Centre in Leicester is a good place of interest that are worth looking at for family fun. Nothing can ever beat Megatron though! Thanks for your comments.

Me aswell! When Mcd's actually felt like Mcd's!! I very vaguely remember the walls being covered in pics of Ronald Mcdonald, Birdie, Hamburgler & Grimace in Space gear on the moon or something to that effect. Ahh, the nostalgia. I consider to myself to have been really lucky to have gone as I've never seen or heard of anything like it.

I remember that place as the Megatron, although we only went in there once as a young family when I was a child... It was ahead of it's time. Now with the craze of space films and Doctor Who the Megatron Restaurant would be crazily busy.

I remember driving by this sometime in around 2005/6. It was by then ruined, and just looked absolutely otherworldly. I had no idea it had been a McDonalds until just this afternoon!

I remember being violently ill as an eight year old after eating a Filet of Fish at this restaurant. Saying that I remember more of how much it reminded me of Pizza Planet from the first Toy Story film which was in the cinemas at the same time. Shame it met it’s untimely demise, it was quite magical as a kid. Probably quite grim if you were an adult though my dad never let on.

Thanks for the video! I frequented it, but since the Brits didn't like spicy sausage, they didn't go there for breakfast. They probably (and I did too!) went to TESCO's breakfast more often.

The quality of the video coupled with the sudden jump cuts and the lack of audio on the brief interior shot makes it feel borderline surreal. I wish there was more though, but I'll take this :)

:) . Actually, stop press, I have just looked back at the original tape and I have another 5 to 10 seconds or so and also the sound from the internal shot. Watch this space !!!! Thanks for subscribing and when I upload the missing bit you will be able to look at all 5 seconds of it !

I went in here quite late in its life, maybe 2003 or so? The inside did not look as cool as all the pictures and videos I've seen of it in the 90s. It was a bog standard McDonald's counter at the side and the main area was just a huge and very dark/gloomy sea of tables and chairs.. atmosphere was dreadful and it smelt stale. Wish I could have seen it in the 90s!

Have you got any pictures of it when it was in it's blue and silver livery with the numbers painted around it? - I can only find a picture of the restaurant completely in white or as a McDonalds! - For years as a kid it was the halfway point for our journeys between london and Lincolnshire so it's always held a special spot wth me. If you have got any images of it during that period I'd love to hear from you!

@gregvideo07 ah im proper gutted i remember this from when i was a kid (Megatron) but have since moved form Cambridge would of loved to even just come back and seen the mcDonalds. so sad its been knocked down :( cant find much info/pictures about it at all on google :(

Until I was about 3 we lived in Norfolk and went here sometimes. I spent an hour finding out where abouts it was, checked street view and it was gone. At least I found pictures and this video of it and I wasn't dreaming it all, shame it's been demolished though.

Oh has the old restaraunt been demolished now? Not been passed that way in quite some time. Used to be right next to the A1, before they re-routed it. I can remember when it was the Megatron and had that giant robot outside.

Hi ethwergym ! Not sure if there is a way to message privately on here .. Hmmm .. Of course one of us could put an email address in a comment but that's not very private .. Or you could put a disposable email address In a comment and I will send it an email ! Re the extra footage .. I realised why I cut it out. It was taken inside the McDonald's where there is some background music playing and I remembered that when I first put the longer version on KZfaq it got a 'copyright strike' because of the background music !!! So I had to trim the interior bits !
