An example flight from KASJ Tri County to KEDE Northeastern Regional in the USA, in horrendous weather in the Cessna 152 - navigating by instruments and explaining along the way.
Enjoy!

Excellent. I've tried this a few times (...not enough times, however) and man is it tricky to keep things all lined up! Thanks for a very detailed explanation of the process.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I just started MSFS a few days ago. I've done my first flight using VOR, but I was still relying on the ingame landing pattern to get me lined up with the runway since I still have a hard time spotting the runway by eye. Today I'm gonna give using ILS a go and see if I can do my first flight (aside from flying traffic patterns) without those landing patterns turned on. Edit: Update, just did a flight from Krakow (EPKK) to Pyrzowice (EPKT) using VOR and ILS and aside from the fact I was sweating buckets trying to keep that compass aligned, everything went well and that's my first successful flight without the built in landing pattern guidance enabled. Thanks again for the help!

Best video I’ve seen on radio nav. I’m getting back into flying after 15 years off and needed a review. Great respect flying the 152 well in weather. I had to laugh (good natured) a couple times though as I’ve never flown to an airport that is 18’ above the ground, nor have I used aileron trim in a 152. 😊

Yeah - the sim lets you get away with some things that don't exist in the real aircraft :)

Nice vid, but if I may point out something. I noticed that on approach, you are trying to use pitch to control height, and throttle to control speed. That is backwards (i know, it sounds counter-intuitive). You're also quite slow, and at risk of stall. For C152, you should set flaps to 30, and trim the elevator for a speed of ~60 knots. If you are trimmed correctly, the aircraft will maintain roughly 60 knots, without requiring any input on the yoke. From there, control your rate of descent with the throttle, and do no adjust the pitch. Do this, and your descent path will be much smoother and the speed will remain constant.

If you watch some of the later videos when I work through some of the basic airmanship skills, I look at exactly this subject. It's an interesting one - because students are taught the method you describe, and then experienced pilots admit that's only taught to keep people out of trouble :)
@nmode7420
@nmode7420 Жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Beckett I'm not sure what experienced pilot would ever tell you that, but as a pilot myself, I assure you they've given bad advice. Using the incorrect method is why your airspeed is varying so much on approach, at any given moment it is wavering anywhere from 100 knots, down to 50 knots. Correct use of throttle and pitch coordination, will give you a constant angle of attack, and a constant airspeed with zero input required. The only thing you have to manage is your heading and rate of descent... Doing it your way, you have to manage speed, pitch, descent rate and heading. This is why when you notice you're off the glide slope, you're correcting it, but losing management of your airspeed, so then you notice that and try to correct your airspeed and fall off the approach path, it's a never ending cycle of correction that can be avoided easily.

I'm very new to flight sim. I've watched about 30 videos explaining this procedure and was baffled. Your film finally helped me grasp the principle, made absolute sense. I presume the technique would be the same in XP? Thanks.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 жыл бұрын
Yes - the principles are of VOR radio naviation - regardless of the simulator, or aircraft type :) The symbology might change from instrument to instrument, but they all mean the same thing.

I've heard this weird thing about controlling speed vs controlling climb/decent during landing. Use power changes to control climb/decent and use trim/pitch to control speed.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 жыл бұрын
Yep - it's a common way to think about flying - that you can control descent rate with throttle, and just hold the attitude with the elevators. I think sometimes it's advocated if somebody is struggling to coordinate everything easily.
@rinzler9775
@rinzler9775 Жыл бұрын
This is essential when landing. Also, you need to "think ahead" of the aircraft. The power change takes a few seconds to effect.

Must be very important for you to get there, wherever that is. You need a pond with ducks. If they ain't flying neither should you. Single engine IFR is stupid.
