technically the first vtol aircraft was the yak 38 however it didn't last very long due too how it was using a triangle config and the front jet had compressor stalls so it liked to flip forwards (was the only time it flew vtol and crashed subsequently) it also had bad heat resistance so it melted itself on test flights. very cool for someone to mention its actually British as I've met Americans who've said America made the entire thing

I'm pretty sure the British used the Harriers for like 23 years and only retired them in 2006. They switched to the euro fighters

I live a couple miles from a navy base in the UK that had them they use to strap them down on the concrete to test the engines and I could hear the the jet engines from home. They have a museum there too with❤ one on display and a couple in bits under ground and if the need comes they can put them back together to use them again
