I’ll walk you through that first aerobatic practice flight in the YAK-50 during spring training. I’ll narrate the flight with what I’m doing, and what I’m looking for, from takeoff to landing.
The maneuvers are flown at a higher than normal show altitude as it was our first practice back in April 2020, and I only practiced a few maneuvers of interest for training. We kept the speeds normal, but the G loading back to only 5G max. We flew a flat spin, 2 x gyroscopic tumbles, a double aileron roll, and an inverted pass. Of course we finished our practice with 2 obligatory photo “banana” passes.
Here are some YAK-50 numbers to know:
Clean 1G Stall Speed: 100 km/h
Max Speed: 450 km/h
Liftoff & Approach Speed: 150 km/h
G Range: +9G to -6G
Engine Max Power Setting: 99% RPM / Ambient Pressure + 125mm MP
Engine Climb/Aerobatics Power Setting: 82% RPM / 800mm MP
Thrust to Weight ratio: 0.71 to 1 at Max Power
