I fly a Saratoga and have been flying about 3 years. I passed my written IFR last spring but have really slacked on completing the flying portion until getting settled with my panel. I just recently upgraded my 530W to the IFD550 and got my Ipad pro9.7 mounted on the right stack (by going with remote mount transponder). With foreflight on the yoke and a garmin G5 as a backup AI (to my standard vacuum 6 pack) I now feel like I have a fully capable panel to travel IFR. Thanks again for the excellent video!
@BaronPilot

+Brent Reddick sounds like a great setup. I would love to see that. Also, consider getting some solid hood time with a CFI or even consider something like Simcom or equivalent. I just finished my annual recurrent training at Simcom. Even though I fly regularly, every year I am amazed at both how much my skills have slipped and at how much better I am when I leave there. Besides all the emergency procedures, My scan and hand flying skills improve greatly. If I could afford it I would go every six months. That's how much I think it helps. I mention this only because you mentioned not flying much IFR since last spring.

It's been many years since I've flown. Sometimes I just shake my head in amazement about the technology of today. Applying simple things such as iPads, tablets, and other similar tools to assist the pilot is great. General aviation pilots really can benefit from these tools when used in conjunction with the cockpit instruments. When I look back none of these things were available. In fact they were many years away from even being conceived. I started my flight lessons as a junior in high school and received my Private Pilot Single Engine Land license the same week that I graduated from high school. My training dates were from May 1985 - June 1986. Then I was off for further adventures in the U.S. Navy. I was an avionics technician and served on 3 aircraft carriers. That was an awesome period in my life.. To get to work hands on with jet fighters on a regular basis was an experience I'll never forget!
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 6 жыл бұрын
That must have been an amazing time in your life. Yes things like ipad provide so much now. I too started flying before all of this technology and I must say it adds so much safety to the cockpit.

I had a buddy when I was in the Army (1969)who was a helicopter pilot (Hueys). He got lost one time and landed in a field beside a country store. His crew chief ran into the store to ask where they were. The clerk pointed out where they were on the map. He went back and showed my friend and off they went. When he took off, everybody in the store was outside watching. I bet they still tell the story to this day.

I really like the overlays you use throughout your videos. I have been using a Hero 5 and 2 audio cables that you and I discussed in an earlier video you made. I am wanting to add a second gopro now but I am using Windows Movie Maker and since it is the free version I cannot overlay other videos taken with a second camera. So what editing software do you use to put multiple camera views and overlays with a continuous audio?
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 7 жыл бұрын
Adding more cameras is a slippery slope. I am now up to 6 although there always seams to be one or two that malfunction at the worst times!! And the new 5s malfunction the most. I am going to buy new SD cards to see if it helps. For editing, I use Final Cut Pro 7 on the Mac. There is a newer version but I really like this version so I am holding out as long as I can.

Yea, I figure it will be a steep learning curve! I will most likely have to go with adobe since I am using a microsoft windows platform. My H5 has been working flawlessly (knock on wood) for about 10 hours of video so far. I control it mostly through the app on my phone. But I work with a 100,000.00 FLIR system on my helicopter and it malfunctions more than my 400.00 GoPro, lol. Thanks for the reply, have a great day

One small critique that I might have for you is the gear retraction on takeoff. Maybe not so much in this video or at St. Augustine airport specifically but just something to think about as was pointed out to me by an FAA examiner. Just because you have a positive rate of climb doesn't mean that you should retract the gear. Rather, a positive rate without any usable runway remaining for an emergency landing is when you should retract the gear. The examiner pointed this out to me on a 7500 foot runway simulating at 50 feet agl we had a bird strike. Normally I was raising the gear at or just prior to that height. He pointed out that if the gear was in transition, we would've most likely landed on the belly or as the gear was still coming back down if I'd even remembered to put it back down. Instead because he instructed me not to raise the gear he made a safe landing back on the runway with plenty of room to spare. I had gotten into the routine of raising it quickly because of KZfaq videos of jets and airliners doing so, but they do it because an immediate return is impossible without going around an making an approach for an emergency landing. Again, just food for thought. Clear skies and tailwinds.
@ProPilotPete
@ProPilotPete 7 жыл бұрын
2 Tall Paul 428 good advise for a single engine. In a twin its gear up at positive rate in case you lose an engine you've gotten rid of that drag, could be the difference between clearing the trees or not!
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 7 жыл бұрын
There are two schools of thought when it comes to this & I hope to never prove either of them right or wrong. When I owned my Mooney, I would delay retracting the gear. If I lost my engine at a low altitude I was a glider and had no option but to land straight ahead. Although one could argue that the more altitude gained the more options one may have. But every scenario will dictate different options. However in a twin, you have much more going on. Low, slow and dirty with an engine lost (Critical engine or not) is a twin pilot's worst nightmare and he/she has only seconds to make the right input. My goal is to increase airspeed to give me a margin of safety above the VMC speed as soon as possible. . As soon as my gear goes up I can feel the airplane accelerate and climb rate increase. To be honest, a gear up after a power loss is the insurance company's problem not mine. My priority is to survive the incident. I will not even climb at Vy since I still get 1,000+ fpm 20kts faster which will give me a larger margin of safety. I'm not saying you are wrong, I am simply saying I follow a different train of thought. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comments. Critiques and opposing points of view are always welcome.

nice video , quick question , is there a reason for the rear windows to be blacked out ? is it to aid the camera lighting or keep the heat out ? I thought black attracted heat ??
@BaronPilot

They are window shades to keep the Florida heat out. They are silver like the sun shades you have in your car windshield. When I don't have rear passengers I leave them in. It keeps it much cooler.

what does fly runway heading mean? does that mean we are not allowed to turn either left or right at traffic pattern altitude.

Correct. Its a quicker way of giving a heading verses saying "fly heading 130" since I am already flying 130
