Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. I wish this gent the best. I'm an aerospace engineer and own a Bonanza and have a NDA with Textron to make new ruddervators. THE PROBLEM is that you will have to do a dive test, to 300mph, to show that it won't flutter. Beech lost at least one pilot doing this back in the '40's or early '50's. They finally got the radio control stuff out of a military drone and did the dive test to about 300mph (like 1.4 Vne) to satisfy the FAA. I talked with NASA Ames about using their wind tunnel to test the aft fuselage of a Bonanza with aluminum ruddervators with external balances (that would work fine....the P-38 used them and it was 250 mph faster than a Bonanza) but it would cost $800K to do it. The ABS prize is 1/8 that. The entire problem is the FAA and their test regimen. You cannot ask a man to dive a Bonanza to this speed. It has to be remote control. So you'll need to take the plane out over the ocean and do the test. It's supremely expensive and in the big scheme of things, there won't be enough demand to justify the expense. Don't get me wrong...I love the V-Tail Bonanza and think it's a wonderful aircraft. But the FAA has really hosed owners on this issue.

Thank you for sharing. Hope it goes well with the ruddervators. Nice collection of old warbirds. I once got to see this old MIG up close. My friend showed me how the wiring in the landing gear assembly was covered and handsewn with yak leather. It was meticulously done. Who could have imagined? Stay safe, kids -

Thanks Scott for interviewing the gentleman making the carbine fiber ruddervators a definitely a much needed improvement and hopefully the FAA doesn’t drag there asses getting this item approved

G'day Scott, Yay Team ! Good to hear about the Carbon Tailfeathers for the V-Tail Banannas...; once upon a time DeHavilland DH-82 Tiger Moths had a similar Problem..., but it was the Corrugated Elektron Aerofoil-shaped Fueltank, which was the Structural Upper Wing Centre-Section, taking the Compression-loads from the Upper-Wing Spars' Inner Ends... Special Metalurgy, discontinued since 1945..., special oddball thickness too - and the special Rollers to put the special Corrugations in the special thickness of the special metalurgical Unobtainium...; the set which DeHavilland had were destroyed by German Bombing, apparently, and the duplicate Rollers at Fishermans' Bend outside Melbourne, Oz, were scrapped and destroyed after VP-Day. So, ANYTHING which damaged a Tank effectively wrote off that Tiger, and in 1979 an Insurance Broker told me there were 17 Tiger Moth Restorations stuck for lack of a Tank. Later on, I heard that a coalition of Airframe Owners pooled funding to commission a new set of Rollers, and a batch of the correct obsolete Metalurgically correct Elektron the proper thickness, so as to Roll the Corrugations in WHILE forming the Curve from Rear-Spar to Rear Spar, under the Front Soar, around, up, over and back to the Rear - before welding in the Rear and Side Walls... And then they made quite a stockpile of Tanks, ready to sell - while retaining the special Rollers and a stock of the trick Sheetmetal - for contingencies. It's good to see the V-Bonanza Tribe doing something similar... Though the Tiger people "simply" remanufactured New Tanks which met all the Specifications of the Old Type Certificate..., so the Beaurocrats had no licence to obstruct...; this bloke is trying to get the Type Certificate Specifications CHANGED..., which is entirely likely to be quite a LOT more tedious and tendentious - as regards the Paperwork. My guess is that the Beaurocrats won't sign off until the Weight of the Paperwork submitted, reviewed and accepted equals at least the Weight of the new Component... And if they feel like being a bit Nit-Picky then the Paperwork may need to equal the Take-off Weight of the whole bloody AEROPLANE ! So, I join you in hoping Old Mate there doesn't get too badly stuffed-around in the process...(!). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

I'm probably the only one on the planet that knows nothing about the 'ruddervator issue'. 8( Now I'm off to fix that. It would really be a shame if they grounded all the V-tails. They are so iconic!! --gary

The V-Tail uses Magnesium ruddervators. There hasn't been a replacement for many years and the Mag Ruddervators are subject to corrosion or damage easily. An unserviceable part could ground the airplane.

Is there a reason you didn't share any images of the nifty carbon fiber ruddervators you guys were pointing to and describing so eloquently? I can't imagine that intellectual property rights or any trade secrets are at risk here.

I showed three ruddervators…. Only the brown one was magnesium. The others were carbon fiber.

That's a great question, however, I'm sure since they will likely be the only game in town, the "cost will be what the cost is". Meaning....whatever they want! 😆 However, based on the interview, I get the feeling they are enthusiast and not necessarily in it for the money...
