In this video we do a quick rundown between the different weather reporting systems used by pilots. I'm used to the ATIS, because I fly out of Class D Airspace, but I never really knew where they got the weather information form. Obviously it came from some kind of weather reporting system... but which one?

On another point... oh how many times I've had the AWOS on speed dial, checking back every twenty minutes if the ceilings have lifted or wind subsided....

@@aloha-rob Don't be. I mean I know you still will be, but it's not as bad as you think. Have you studied the ACS? Even the index on how your checkride is going to work? Good luck and report back to us if you can!

Wait so, why do we care if it's ASOS or AWOS? You said you can check the sectional to find out. But, what does finding out which of those two it is do for us as pilots? Is ASOS the one you gotta click the mic a bunch of times to listen to the CTAF and AWOS has it's own frequency?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
They both have their own frequency, and should be constantly broadcasting. I've never heard of clicking a mic so the system will produce it, only to turn the lights on at a non towered field at night. I could be wrong though. Would be interested in finding out. But, at towered airports you would only hear the ASOS after the tower closes and it switches over to it. Otherwise tower uses the ASOS information to make the ATIS. Why is this important to the pilot. Meh. Probably not so much, but it's a good educational piece for those that are learning and need to know the difference.

@@flywiththeguys I know at least 2 airports that have the click the mic to get weather on CTAF systems. I don't know how I know. Don't know what they're called. Can't find anything in the sectional or AFD about it. Just heard others clicking and started using it as well. Not even sure exactly how many clicks so I hit it a bunch. Unlike AWOS, these don't show up as METARs in the weather system. No phone number. Only local weather, on demand, on CTAF frequency. The worst thing is when you are high enough to trigger these from 2 different airports simultaneously.

Ok, I tried to google the airports I know and found that they actually do have online access to their weather systems but they are not part of the national/faa weather system so they won't appear on any official weather. Digi-Wx is what it's called apparently and here's a few for the airports I'm familiar with. No idea how you're supposed to know this as a transient pilot. Maybe you can inform us. digiwx-47n.com/mobile www.digiwx-1n7.com digiwx-3n6.com/Mobile

are AWOS winds in true?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
I believe all weather reporting systems are in magnetic for the pilots. General rule of thumb, if it's written it's true, if you hear it, its magnetic. Not always the case, but I would say 90% of the time that works.

if you know or if you know someone who can explain the process of installing and checking and operating those systems. if you know a project manager for those systems who can help in understanding the procedures, I will be grateful. thank you

I don't. If I wanted to learn more, I would contact the airport manager of a local air field. They know more about the subject. =)
