You have probably already used the FM Mod knob in Serum. And most definitely it sounded thicc and created a great bassline effect. But have you ever wondered what is actually the "science" behind FM - Frequency Modulation (or rather Phase Modulation in Serum)? In this video, Will explains everything you need to know!

Very well explained! I think you kind of put words on something i subconsciously understood. Considering that FM something where the modulator signal is pitched very low, you can "hear the actual movement of specific shape". This is very fun to do with the noise oscillator by turning the pitch down in it and let it modulate OSC A or B

Thats why serum sound so good in FM 😮 I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY AND WHY IT SOUNDS SO DIFFRENT FROM VITAL AND I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE UNISON! Thank you thank you thank you! Brilliant explenation! Pure clairity.

dope thanx. stoked on Massive X and PM, it's kinda like it has an extra two OSC's for modulating VS the idea of MOD targets in Serum, then the noise OSC you can load any sample like Serum has it's noise osc too as a MOD target. This is probably a reason I've been having so much fun with it and why it feels so fresh,(and crazy how they all blend well) and finally wrapped my mind around the custom LFO ratios and preset shapes, at least sorta ugh workin on it!

this is a good video, but i think it might be incorrect for most FM implementations. I think it's usually not the pitch of the carrier being modulated by the phase of the modulator, but instead the phase values of the carrier are stored in a lookup table containing the values for a single cycle of it's waveform, and it's being read through by phasor (a ramp wave generating values from 0-1 repeatedly). then the modulating operator disrupts the phasor and causes it to read the carrier's lookup table at different points depending on the phase value of the modulator at each sample, thus modulating the phase of the carrier.

Ok cool. But WHY is phase Modulation actually preferred by most plugins?

so why does serum's knob say FM if it's not frequency modulation?
@MikeRenouf

This is a really interesting video and very clear explanation. I think the answer to your question is simply that the mathematics required to create FM synthesis effects in a digital environment is best done using the technique of phase modulation. It provides near enough the same sonic output, but is more easily coded than using actual FM. I'd be happy if someone corrects me or gives a better explanation. 🪐✨

First of all, great video, it cleared up a lot for me. Still i am confused about one thing: You said "The frequency of the modulator changes the frequency of the carrier" (before you went into detail about phase modulation) Now i am new to the whole topic so i might be wrong, but the sine wave of the modulator has just one frequency, if the frequency of the modulator (lets say it's 5Hz) changes the frequency of the carrier, then the carrier frequency would be constant because the modulators frequency doesn't change at all (it stays at 5Hz) Am i missing out on something here?
@MikeRenouf
@MikeRenouf Жыл бұрын
The point you're struggling with I think is that frequency is a description of how fast something is changing. The modulator's pitch is constantly changing (the sine shape is going up and down). If you say your car is going 10 miles per hour it is at a fixed speed - but it is constantly moving...
