Professor Chris Pollitt's comments, for those that want more info: The filly was barefoot and sound throughout the study period; the substrate was shale covered hills with pasture in the valleys. There was no supplementary feeding. The hoof at birth was manufactured in utero when the fetus was non-weight bearing. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘foal hoof’ but in fact should be referred to as the fetal hoof. The foal hoof is the hoof grown by the foal after it was born. In the first photograph (A) the medial and lateral wall of the hoof are vertical and the hoof capsule resembles a cylinder. Four weeks later (C) the distal fetal hoof remains the same shape and size but the hoof above it is larger. Now the hoof resembles an inverted cone - the coronary band is larger than the bearing border. The border between fetal and foal hoof is marked by a circumferential, blood stained ring, perhaps a signature of coronary band trauma at first weight-bearing. The ring is also known as the foal hoof crease. By 5 months the fetal hoof has grown out and the foot begins to adopt an adult appearance - a bearing border greater in circumference than the coronary band. The shape is that of a ‘truncated cone’ - a cone with its apex cut off. There are two ermine marks in the skin of the dorsal coronet at birth. No pigment had been delivered for incorporation into the coronary hoof in utero. Hoof pigmentation commenced at birth and followed the foal hoof boundary to the bearing border. At 8 weeks the lateral coronary band was injured when the mare trod on Bella's coronary band. Tubular hoof production was arrested until the lesion healed. The deficit in the hoof wall, corresponding to the period of zero hoof production, moved distally down the hoof wall and ‘grew out’ 5 months later. The 30mm scale in each photograph enabled calibrated measurements - at birth the dorsal hoof wall measured 39.5 mm. Eleven months later it was 615.0 mm. The foal hoof boundary grew 50.8 mm in 113 days, approximately 2 mm /day. The adult hoof grows at 0.2 mm/day or 6 mm /month. However the hoof growth rate incorporates the rapid growth of the foal itself increasing in body weight from 42 kg at birth to 380 kg at the end of the study period. Nevertheless this result tends to confirm the observation that the hooves of young horses grow faster than older horses. When 2 years old Bella was sold and trained as a carriage horse.

Such a good watch Simon. I would love to see 6 radiographs taken over the same period so you could assess the coffin bone growth. Do you know what is driving the change in shape to truncated cone? I have often wondered how horses hooves get to be wider at the bearing surface than the coronary band, does the hoof material stretch (and thin) or is there extra material getting created. The second option seems unlikely.

Btw there’s a typo in your comment Eleven months later it was 615.0mm”. Rogue decimal point?

Very nice way to proove with example. Looked like an animation but we know the time and consistency it took to achieve. Great work 👏👏👏

Grazie per le gentili parole. Mi dispiace che non abbiamo una traduzione italiana dei miei libri. Mi piacerebbe, ma è molto difficile tradurre testi scientifici in un settore di nicchia come quello della mascalcia. Forse un giorno!

At what age do you recommend a horse first gets it's feet trimmed? People are saying 2-3 weeks after it is born but after watching this perhaps letting the hoof grow out during that first year ad it goes through it stages

Foals should be trimmed and maintained as early as possible. Neglected hoof care is probably one of the biggest offences horse owners have 😡
