Foam Board RC Planes for Newbies!
Foam board is an inexpensive, lightweight and easily obtainable product (such as at Dollar Tree foam) for RC model airplane design and construction. Foam board RC planes for newbies and beginners is a great topic for someone designing their first RC airplane. You can test your ideas quickly and make any necessary modifications.

Foamboard RC planes can be cut with an X-acto knife, sanded as needed and quickly assembled with hot glue. Foamboard RC planes are a perfect how to for the new RC designer or a beginner series.
As foam board is so lightweight, it contributes greatly to the success of smaller RC model airplanes.
In this video I'll show several of my foam board design projects, and offer some basics as to what foam board can and cannot do, with techniques on covering and adding strength to the final product. In short, foam board is the ideal construction material for the beginner RC plane designer.

The dollar store one with the black paper peels off a lot easier if you go in your bathroom while the shower is on hot. The steam helps to get it off in bigger peices. I got mine off in 1 20x30 inch peice.

I learned that using Vinyls adhesive papers that are used T-shirts are excellent Forgetting the surfaces that are durable-strong and very light

Very useful video for us the begginers. The black board can be spread with alcohol and will detach easily. I really learn many thing with your videos, Please consider models with KFM airfoilsm they are easier to build. A link to the materials would be very useful for begginer builders. Have you used the Flitetest foam board techniques? Removing the paper definitely removes weight however the foam board can be waterproofed which prevents delamination.

Seth: I just added a link for the plans in the video description. Plans are pretty much a "TurboCAD sketch," but there is a 6" ruler for scale, and the plane is all straight lines. Tim

Thank you for the interesting and informative video 🙂 I was thinking of using foam sheets as a lighter alternative to balsa wings for small 1/2A R/C (glow & diesel) models. As such, would you know if this material is suitably durable and fuel-proof ?

Ding: There are a lot of different types of foam. Best to test a sample piece of foam first with a bit of fuel prior to building the model. Tim

Thank you Tim for your videos. quick question, I see this Flysky FS-i6X transmitter on amazon which is cheaper than the Spektrum models. any drawbacks with this transmitter?

Gihan: I do not have any experience with the Flysky products. Taking a look at Amazon, the reviews seem positive, maybe give it a chance. As RC plane crashes are such a pain in the neck, I like to find the best products out there. Spektrum seems to lead the pack (they introduced 2.4 GHz technology in 2004, for example). What I really like about the newer Spektrum TX and RX are their built-in antennas. I have lost 3 models over the years to antenna issues, no more. 😁 Tim

Chris: For a constant chord wing, GC is 25% back from the leading edge. As for the length of the fuselage and size of the tail surfaces, to be honest, I eyeball it and draw something that looks about right. And if in doubt, make the surfaces a bit larger. Tim

I use hinge tape on all my control surfaces I actually cut my control surfaces and will use either some index cards and cut small strips as my hinges and just glue it into the edges after I cut a slit on each edge then I will weave my hinge tape and I have never had a control surfaces rip or break

🌴 So on the dollar store black foam , I realize that removing the paper removes weight, it seemed pretty light with it on ? Could a plane be built with the paper on and then sprayed with something to seal it and make it durable🤔 say clear polyurethane or brushed or parapet with thinned wood glue ? It would add to the adhesion and seal the surfaces and make it more of a hard surface , and more structurally sound, it would seem to me that the extra weight could be over seen with a bigger motor or prop ?

Sure. Just get a three view of a Slow Stick. Say the measured wingspan is 10”. Simply multiply all of the 3 view dimensions by 6, sketch out the full size plans (all straight lines) and build it! Tim

Also, ( don't care) ailerons or not? ( been flying many years) Thanks! P.S. I do have a slow stick. Would rather a big one than an "old fogey)

And on Amazon you can get a 6 pack of each color of a roll of packing tape it's very thin and goes on very easy and looks great and strengthens the model as well and water proofs it I cover my foam board first with packing tape then I cut all my pieces so I cover the whole piece of foam board first cover like two or three of them then lay out your templates and plans and get to cutting

If you spray the board with normal sanitary alchool and wait for 5 minutes, all the paper comes off.
